rooting rose cuttings

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Can someone tell me the best way to root rose cuttings? I cut some cuttings from a lady's house, it's called "Cecil Brunner" and would love to grow it. I love a challenge!! Also, does someone have a photo of it? The one here on Dave's looks pink, the roses on the plant I cut were orange, yellow and some red.
Thanks in advance!

Cecil Brunner is pink as shown in the files and anywhere else online or in nurseries. What you have sounds like Joseph's Coat. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/367/
Not sure about doing cuttings but I bet there are many experts in the Rose Forum so maybe try posting there.

Thanks Sue! I'll do that.

Get some cheap potting soil and a container. Fill the bottom half with the cheap soil, and the top half with an equal mix of sand and soil. Water it until it is soggy, let it drain, and stick the cuttings. Put them in DEEP shade with NO SUN at all. Water the container about every three days. Your rose cuttings will root in about a month.

Louise,

This is also a good site that gives you lots of info on how to root roses. http://www.rdrop.com/~paul/hulse.html

I cut a stem below a node, then just stick it in the ground, I do this all the time and they do quite well!!!! I used to live in Chino Hills, did the same there! So give it a try, using some rooting hormone will help it along,
Good luck, Annie

Hey Annie!
I live in Rancho Cucamonga, grew up in Chino, I have a small commercial iris garden on my mom's property so that's why it says Chino. Thanks for replying to my request here on help with rooting roses cuttings. I put 4 cuttings in a pot with some sand and potting soil, they're out of direct sunlight and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I thought they were from a Cecil Brunner, but it looks like it's Joseph's Coat, thanks to CalifSue! It's still a pretty rose and I want it to root. I don't want to buy one, I get more satisfaction from rooting my own plants. Wish me luck! Thanks to all who got back to me here.

Just a note - Cecil B can grow enormous - give it lots of space - it is one the most undemanding roses I've ever had - the biggest problem was to contain it- good luck
- and yes growing from cuttings is pretty easy - providing you have several of them,( not all will "take") Also now is the best time to take the cuttings and one more thing - one "eye" should be bellow the soil surface.

I checked it yesterday and I had planted 4, one of which is a dead stick but one has new leaves on it and the other 2 are struggling along. I'm looking forward to it coming up. It's either Joseph's Coat or Cecil B, I guess when it blooms I'll know which it is. The lady I got is from said it's Cecil. I'll let you know.
