I bought an Alocasia Borneo Giant. It is doing good in a 3 gallon pot. I haven't put it in the ground yet because I need to know what it likes. I live in the southmost tip end of Texas, the sun can be intense here. Does this plant like full sun or need some shade? It is in morning sun now, under an esperanza tree. Here is a picture, the damaged leaf got that way because the sprinklers were running in the heat of the day and the leaf was scorched by the sun shining on a wet leaf.
A. mac and A. portadora do well in full sun here as long as I remember to water. Also A. black stem will grow in full sun, but does better in morning sun if that helps any.
Borneo Giant, a question on light requirements
Ohh I am so jealous Susie. I want one too. I think Ada got one also. I can't wait to see it when it gets HUGE!!
Hmmmm....that tag looks familiar....:-)
I have mine in sun from about 2 o'clock on, but that's up here.
It's throwing a leaf a week.
I'd think in your area it could take whatever macro or odora is getting.
Assuming......you can keep them watered.
I have robusta in about the same conditions you now have your BG.
It's still a 4 leaf sproutlet though.

Ric, I can't believe how this thing has grown! I think I'll move it to a 15 gallon pot and "experiment" with different exposures.
Alocasia Borneo Giant, is this the biggest EE you can get?
Linda
I think Robusta is larger, but was afraid to try it here.
why are you afraid?
Cause I'm a plant killer of the highest degree!
LOL!
I agree 'killer' it grows like crazy.
I'd say w/ your weather and sun a 15 gallon is about due.
I have odora in a pot that big and just planted 17 seeds I got from it.
So it's a good next size for BG.
I know you occasionally get a freeze but 'how' occasionally?
Can or do you leave macro outside?
But to be fair the 'Lutea' and 'New Guinea Gold' are pretty fast growers too.
Man I wish I had another 2 months or so outside for these guys.
The A. advincula (Batman) is doing well.
I have the second new leaf coming on and a pup.
It's a bit tricky. Down there it would definitely be an understory plant.
My A. robusta has thrown it's second upright leaf.
The danger zone is supposed to be before the true leaves I think.
Then OVER watering is the problem.
(so you should be OK! LOL)
You've missed the most incredible tropical Midwest gardening year ever.
It's been low humidity and mid 80's all of Sept.
This morning was the first 50's since May.
It's been staying in the upper 60's generally at night.
We're supposed to get our first Fall Rain (remember those?)
80 today........rain tonight..........
65 as a high tomorrow.
Maybe frost (ACK the 'f' word) Friday morning.
I'm doubting that but temps definitely in the mid 40's overnight.
I've pulled the robusta indoors and put the others on the porch out of the rain.
Cold AND wet I don't want.
I'd say the source for these probably has a lot to do w/ our successes too.
All the above plants came from enid........
Man can they grow plants!
It's hard not to do well w/ them.
Go for that robusta.....you won't be sorry.
Ric
We freeze about once every hundred years, lol. Actually it had been 15-20 years since a freeze up until last year. It had been a hundred years since it snowed. I thought maybe I'd brought the cold weather down from TN, but then we had the driest winter/spring and the hottest summer on record. We are still above normal.
I've seen the pics you midwest guys have posted, your gardens are great!
I leave all the ears in the ground except Imperialis and Purple Prince. I accidentally forgot Imperialis and Black Velvet in the ground last year and they finally came up around July! I put a blanket over Alo mac during the snow and he survived, so did portadora.
I took a chance and ordered NGG yesterday from zone 9 tropicals. I've killed it once, but not since I moved here.
It got down to 40 here last night. Sure hope my EE's will make it, I have Black magic, Illustris, Macrorrhiza variegated, Alocasia Plumbea, Pink China (hardy), some others that are bulbs, not for sure what they are yet.
I'm not ready for the cold weather, I would love to see a couple more months of weather in the 80's and the lows only in the 70's. I'm I dreaming or what?

2 pugs, if cala doesn't want your cool weather, I'LL TAKE IT!!!! before the hurricane Rita, most people around here did not water in anticipation of the 15-20" of rain we were supposed to get. At the same time the temps stayed at 99-100 (and higher in austin) and in only 3 days I had 2-3 plants that just burned to a crisp. gone, nada left. I didn't noticed til today during my morning inspection.
yeah, I'll take a couple of 40 degree nights and then send it back LOL
If I could I would ship it to you with a big red ribbon tied on it.
I know it is alway nice and warm in Texas, but just think of the nice lawns you have and the tropicals, here in my zone during the cold winter all we can do is dream of it.
Linda
