Janett, I have heard that these don't like transplanting, but from my experience; they are hardy as weeds :) You could plant them indoors or out as long as most frost danger is gone (they don't like cold) once they get outside.

I grow some of my morning glories inside full time, others out and some transplanted, and all of them have done beautifully!

-Hope I could help,

Also, the knowlin's Black (from my knowing) is not that black. It is more of a purple akin to Star of Yelta and Grandpa Ott's.

And, once you plant these, prepare to have them for years! They reseed and spread like wildfire! I haven't plated my yeltas for years and they still come back.

If you are growing them inside do you then pollinate them your self or are they getting seeds anyway. would love to have them blooming indoors also.

its not my pics its from the girl I got the seeds from. I got permission to use them.

my way of being able to transplant morning glories is those jiffy pellets. once the roots come out the bottom(usually two to 7 days) then i actually plant in the ground where i want them. this way they dont have transplant shock.

when i do the seeds in them i water the pellet that first time then usually let it drain for an hour before putting the seed in. this way they arent prone to rot. then i only water when dry. also once in the ground the little pellet acts as a water asorber for those first top roots plants need so much.

most morning glories dont do good indoors in my opinion.

most also dont like to be transplanted but some are hardier then others. my japanese ones i plant directly where i want them so i dont risk the transplant shock and lose them.

Thanks for the the advice.

I have a vine of Akatsuki no umi that has been a happy camper (translated: doing very well) in a sunny window on a short trellis, in my sunroom. I have had it growing indoors since February 2005. It flowers like crazy and has given me quite a few seed capsules. Cool, huh?

Because of your very northern lattitude, starting them early indoors might be worthwhile. But save a few to plant later, just in case.....

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Thanks everybody. I now what a happy camper means, hehe. Whatching way to many amerikan channels and movies never read the tranclation :) you miss so much in what they say.
One word thoe, its when you get to plants and it says :Deciduous: havent got a qlue what that means and the swedish/english lexicons dont trancelate it
Can someone explain that with more that one word I would be most greatefull
Janett

Janett,

Deciduous means that the leaves will fall off the plant, usually when the plant enters a dormant state such as with the onset of winter, or when there is a dry period of weather.

Look at the top row of tabs over to the right on this web page. See the tab titled "Garden Terms"? Click on it, then enter the term "deciduous" or any other term and if it is in the database you will be given the definition. Way cool, huh?

Joseph

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Thanks so very much. now I see how the word fits in on descriptions also, because I tried to figure it out in some texts. can tell you it didnt work.lol
Janett

Besides morning glories, Janett, what do you grow in your garden(s)? Are your neighbors gardeners too? I live in a development where the typical homeowner gardens by installing a few lonely marigolds here and there in a sea of pine bark mulch. I have had an effect on my neighbors who live in my townhouse row, they are becoming more imaginative.

I have just lived in this rental house for 2,5 years and only 10 month of those without my "#¤%&&//&%... to brother. so this was the first summer with the whole BIG and I mean big neglected garden. This summer I have taken down hundreds of nonproducing cherrytrees all tucked to tight. From 1 to10 inches thick so it has not been so much planting for me,
I only have a few roses and some daylilies and a few that i havent learned the english names of yet,
I only have one neighbor and they bought their place last year and it looks fabulous. their garden where also badly neglected but they have the ordinary mixed with some new ideas to. But hey they are 4-5 people thats working the garden. i am alone hehe
During this winter I am going to create as many beds and raised beds that I can create before the ground freezes. And the next summer..........yuuuummm. Both for eyes and mouths
This property is on several acres and as long as I dont touch the landlords little beachhouse I have free hands.
This falI have collected/bought many seeds that I will preplant in feb, thats why I want to learne so I dont destroy to many seeds.
Many of the plants I can only have in the garden summertime. I gonna try to list all the seeds/plants to my info later.

Janett,

Your picture of the Knowlians Black looks "Photoshopped" (digitally altered) to me. I have difficulty believing that the blooms could have that pure a black color. That would imply a new pigment that doesn't exist in other morning glories. Just my opinion.

MM

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

MaineMan, its not my pic. I did put them up there so I could get info of them. both in colour and how to best grow them etc, sorry I didnt explain that more. I have never been a "fanatic" about names before and my gardening has been limited to balcony and houseplants. But what is gardenplants for most of you we grow indoors. At times you almost needed a machete to go true my home.
By the next summer I do however gonna put my own pictures of those flowers that comes up colourtrue or not will show then :0) But when that happens I will however let you know when it is mine and if the pictures are up to the flower colour.

Janett,

Thanks for your explanation. I did understand from your previous message, the reply to Zem, that the picture wasn't produced by you, but came from the girl you got the seeds from.

I fear the picture she supplied cannot be relied on as a faithful representation of the blooms you will get from those seeds. I would be very troubled if people are selling seeds with the aid of photographic images that were deliberately altered to the extent that the images would misrepresent the product.

I think it is fine to use Photoshop or some other image editor to improve an image (and even to remove some cosmetic blemishes) for artistic, esthetic, or composition and design reasons.

However, in my opinion, the edited image should still communicate reality, perhaps better than the unedited picture. But the degree to which an edited image deliberately miscommunicates reality ranges from the unethical toward fraud.

Janett, I look forward to your pictures next year. I am sure you will supply them with good intentions. My message was not meant as a criticism of you.

MM

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

did not feel offended or critisised at all by you. but would make sure I wasnt missunderstood, hey better safe than sorry :0) and I do agree on the colours.
Can say when I asked about using these pics she just told me was not copywright on. so I think she got it from another source. ssshhhh I have seen them in other places the last couple of days :P.
Can you share the light on this. What is the differenc or lack ther off on
Knowlians Black and Kniolas Black? In PF its two different flowers both named with both these names. One purple/black and one blue/black. its the same with some googlesearch.

Please forgive my "bad" eye, but I just can't see a big difference in the photos of the Granpa Ott's and the Star of Yelta. I have one beauty growing here, and I don't know which one it is...as luck would have it, I planted both! Can someone give me any clues on how I can tell them apart??? Is the SofY a deeper, darker purple with a longer, almost red stripe?

Excuse my ignorance. I guess I just don't have a good eye for detail...

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Here is a pretty good closeup of my Grandpa Ottis.....however, we had a good frost two nights ago, and they are all now bit the dust......

Grandpa Ott's was one of the first MGs I grew and Scarlett O'Hara too, wanting to establish an heirloom garden and had read in a seed catalog that these were good choices to begin with...I enjoyed the deep purple of Grandpa Ott's flowers...nice picture, Deann!

Joseph.....I have some very old Columbine seed that belonged to my old Aunt Zera.....She passed away last year at 107 years old...About 8 years ago, she said to me, Deann I want you to dig up as many plants as you can from my garden so they will continue to grow. I did dig up the "mother plant" of the Columbine and I have been passing out seed to everyone in the two counties here....Just about all of my friends have Aunt Zera's Columbine seed....just send me a SASE and I will send some to you....

I would enjoy growing this one, I can establish it in the back yard garden so it will not cross-pollinate with the columbine I have growing out front. I will send a SASBE this week, thanks, Deann!

Wow, some of the morning glories look like they've got a light in the center of them, they just GLOW! Sooooooooo pretty!!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Gourd - there really must be something wrong with my vision - I can't see the difference in the 3 varieties. Can you "describe" a visible difference I can look for?

Here is my Grandpa Ott's I grew years ago. I still have seeds from it, I think, somewhere in the seed stash.
