I walked out to the pond to feed the fish one morning last week and what should I stumble upon? My fountain circle was full of hyacinth blooms! That fountain head stands about 15" or so above the water's surface ... I placed a few extra hyacinths in there this summer in an attempt to hide the black rubbing lining in this circular extension at the end of the pond (my wife wanted a fountain, I was four-square against it as I did want to add even more ripples to the water ... "I mean, c'mon honey, this is a koi pond!")
The morning after my brother and I laid the liner into the pond I stared at the excess liner there at the end of the pond and ... 'click' ... a random idea popped into my head. I could dig a circle outside of the pond, place a short trench between the circle for a fountain and the pond and VOILA! No more ripples! Out came the shovel for a last minute addition! :o) There's a complete circle that is over 4' across and a narrow 5" area where the water flows back into the pond proper.
ANYHOW ... neither of us were fond of the visibility of the rubber liner and we threw 5 or 6 hyacinth in there. I have yet to see hyacinth growth this tall. The tops of these plants are well over 8" above the water's surface.
Do hyacinth typically bloom this much in late September?
D'OH! I'm missing martini time. Later.
Late season water hyacinth blooms
Mine are still blooming.
Bog....I love that MAD TURTLE in the picture!!!!!!!!!! Were did you get it?????
Wife picked it up somewhere a year or so ago! We're still looking for "just the right place" for it in this newer pond. Pretty cool, isn't it? I have a much better picture of it from when it was still new:
I LOVE IT!!!!!! Guess I will have to dig the clay out and make me one...ha ha
Yours is just too cool!! I love the look on his face!!
How is the big pond coming along by the way??
REALLY nicely, I am happy to report. In fact, I would have to say that the pond actually benefitted from the waterfall tragedy back in August. The waterfall basin itself was improved by being properly built up and the two times that it failed and drained the pond caused a lot of soil compaction ... so that aspect of the pond is much closer to being reuly "rock solid." Having to almost start from scratch gave me the opportunity to re-think some things and finally implement some other thoughts and "ideas" I had prior about improving the filtration systems. The pond is well under 3,000 gallons and I now have 11,100 gallons per hour of aereation and filtration taking place. This is the cleanest, most pristine water I have ever had in any contained sytem, save one (I had a 150g African cichlid aquarium years ago that was the epitomy of a self contained "eco-system")
ANYHOW ...
The waterfall is not only safer, but it is much easier to contain any stray, minor leaks that can occur due to animals or excessive debris changing the water flow over the falls proper. The fish are wonderfully healthy. I still have one fish that brought a lot of disease into the pond 4 months ago and he appears to be the one fish that is most susceptible to any sort of sizable swings in pH, chlorine, ammonia or nitrate. Fortunately, that does not happen all that often. I doused the heck out of the pond with hydrogen peroxide a couple weeks ago to deal with a flush of hair algae and he (she?) has some very minor fraying on the top of its tail fin. I can only imagine that a massive kill-off of algae caused a temporary change in water chemistry. A week of medicated food seems to have curtailed that symptom.
It almost seems weird to say this, but the pond actually wound up all the better for that tragedy.
Thanks for asking! :o) As you can see, I really ramble when it comes to this subject ... I have not yet been in love with koi or ponds as I am right now.
LOL...Ramble on!! You have a right...for sure, with all you have been thru!!
I am so glad things worked out better than ever for you!!!
Keep up the GREAT work!!!!! And have fun!!!!
Sue
ROTFL.........you the man!!!
Works good on 'dem fry eatin bullfrogs too! :o)
Now Buck, you leave them bullfrogs alone. They don't eat fry. They are pond frogs not aquatic frogs and they are incapable of catching anything underwater and eating it!
Now about your machine gun solution, could ya would ya bring that over to my house for a bit. I've got a few targets for you to practice on. I'm thinking venison steak, venison stew, venison sausage, and venison kabobs! And a few pairs of gloves would be nice from the hides.
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm ..... no.
I'm thinkin ...
rotten birds,
evils frogs,
ex wives ... ... ... who have my children ......
X-Wives??? That's fair game.
Oh, if you only knew ........... lol
