I walked out to the pond to feed the fish one morning last week and what should I stumble upon? My fountain circle was full of hyacinth blooms! That fountain head stands about 15" or so above the water's surface ... I placed a few extra hyacinths in there this summer in an attempt to hide the black rubbing lining in this circular extension at the end of the pond (my wife wanted a fountain, I was four-square against it as I did want to add even more ripples to the water ... "I mean, c'mon honey, this is a koi pond!")

The morning after my brother and I laid the liner into the pond I stared at the excess liner there at the end of the pond and ... 'click' ... a random idea popped into my head. I could dig a circle outside of the pond, place a short trench between the circle for a fountain and the pond and VOILA! No more ripples! Out came the shovel for a last minute addition! :o) There's a complete circle that is over 4' across and a narrow 5" area where the water flows back into the pond proper.

ANYHOW ... neither of us were fond of the visibility of the rubber liner and we threw 5 or 6 hyacinth in there. I have yet to see hyacinth growth this tall. The tops of these plants are well over 8" above the water's surface.

Do hyacinth typically bloom this much in late September?
D'OH! I'm missing martini time. Later.
