A special THANK YOU to Marilyn

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sue (Calif_Sue) and I want to thank you for such a fun time yesterday. Marilyn hosted us at her beloved Berkeley Botanical Gardens. http://botanicalgarden.berkeley.edu/

We had the best time. She is a powerhouse too, MISS ENERGY PLUS!! She showed us all around and let us sneak up to her growing ground of her cactus and succulents. They were beautiful. She couldn't have been nicer or more helpful to us.

I just know we will be good friends in the future. Her heart is made of pure gold.

Poor Marilyn was working so hard getting ready for the very special sale they are having there this Sunday. But she took out time for us and made sure we had a great time. If you can go, GO!! We got a preview. So many plants to die for.

Sue (with the big smile and red hair) and Marilyn (in the cactus T shirt and the bigger smile) in the Tropical House. Check out the scenery. INCREDIBLE!!

I fell in love with a few plants that WILL be in my garden as soon as I can find them. Here was one.

Sue and I both went gaga over this tree, full of blooms.

The views were spectacular. The Botanical Garden is located in beautiful country. It is surrounded by hills that are full of glorius evergreen trees. Just spectacular in every way. I am jealous Marilyn gets to work in such a place. I get Hayward. LOL

Incredible trees dot the pathways. So much of interest to look and lust after.

Boy, did Marilyn spank my behind when she caught me off the path taking a picture of this beauty. I think I did it in front of her boss too. OOPS! You can dress me up but you sure can't take me out.

I was meant to live in a place like this. Somehow I must have been exchanged at birth.

THANKS again Marilyn and THANK YOU Sue for inviting me to tag along!!

I am so so jealous! Sue I recognize and it is super nice to meet you Marilyn! I cannot help but notice there is no picture of my friend Kell...Let me guess, she was behind the camera the whole time?

There are plants in these pics I might kill for!! Did I mention I was jealous?!?!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was really home watering your gunnera Chele. LOL I wasn't there at all.
Slap me silly to get me to mail it you and Anna. I am so pathetic. Ask Sue, I told her 10 times I had to mail that plant to you.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

No, Kell's pink hair was in need of fixing so I promised no pics! And would you believe after 1 pic, my battery died!
This was all I got.
A beautiful clump of Jade Empress, Finger PalmRhapis multifida, I have it pending in the Plantfiles.

I kind of wondered what happened to my plant! LOL Maybe you oughta keep it happy until spring and mail it when it weighs 200 pounds. ROTF

Pink hair? You don't say. I had no idea it went that deep. :)

Really beautiful palm! Can I give you two a shopping list?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have so many plants of Susie's here, I am charging her rent till I send them.

Yours is looking good. I do send pictures once a month of your loved one for a nominal fee of $1 per pic, Chele. Want one?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

ROTFLOL Was the first one free?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You won't be laughing when you get your fertilizer fee, Chele!!

And YES, first one is free and you got it already as I recall.

Marilyn

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are such a very nice lady Marilyn!! I hear we are going to epi world soon. LOL. I can't wait. Sue is getting super charged over it. LOL

Hey Chele, why are you visiting in California??? Nosey?? LOL

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks, kell, for your nice words.

Actually, we can go to Regan's Nursery AND Epi World at the same time!! What a deal, huh? Don has great epis, and he doesn't charge an arm and a leg for them.

See you soon!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Kell you are so bad! I had a link to this thread emailed to me. So there! HA! Actually, I think that someone that E'd it was just teasing me and rubbing it in!

Marilyn, Kell's hair wasn't really pink was it? :P

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Sure it is, haven't you seen the picture her hubby took of her? She posted it on the brug forum, http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1635780
That's why she loves pink brugs and blooms so much, or as she calls it, pepto pink! She blends right in.

I wasn't rubbing it in...really...oh ok, well maybe just a tad! If you ever want to come out to CA Chele, we can take you on a tour.

Edited for spelling , again, man I don't know why I bother, you know what I mean even when mispelled!

ROTF I don't think so!!
I am going to bed. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey Chele, when you are hot, you are hot, and I am so hot. Believe it!!

Oh Marilyn, Regans is close to where I work so I am constant visitor. I LOVE going there.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Badseed - don't let these girls give you TOO bad of a time!!! LOL I LOOOVVED the picture, Sue!! Can't you just see kell like that? She has such a fun personality!

If I were that close to Regan's I'd be there often too, kell. It's a great nursery.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

Love the pink hair, but the tiara is just maahvelous!

the BBG is truly a wonderful place. I did my post grad work there and always took a little time to walk the gardens when it felt like my head was about to pop from information overload. And I agree, the tropical collection is really something to behold. It's the place responsible for my addiction to salvias and other cloud forest genera.

So happy to see that you had a good time there.

golden bear forever...lol,
don

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Kell are you having hot flashes or did you get your buns too close to the toaster?

Thank you Marilyn. I have actually met Sue and hugged her little neck! She is a long time plant trading pal as well. Kell on the other hand........one of these days. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Now do not be mean, Chele. LOL. I am taking great care of your monster to be and I may just charge you half price for its room and board as a friendship courtesy. I only do that for my most favorite people. I may even send you something pink. LOL Like a lock of my hair.

Oh, how I wish I were at the sale this morning. I was so bad this week, I had to stay home. My husband is very nice but even I know when I have stepped over the bounds of sanity.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I am going to laugh when you blink and that sucker is suddenly 7 feet tall! Then you will HAVE to keep it! You better leave the pink hair to the muppets so you don't tick them off! LOL

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Please, you guys, for those of us who are ignorant: WHAT are you talking about re Badseed's plant? What's the story? Tell, tell......... puhleeze?

drdon - When were you at the Garden last? Some years ago we actually got a paved parking lot up the hill across the street. LOL Take a look at their website: http://botanicalgarden.berkeley.edu/newentrance/New_Entrance_Updates.html. We have just finished a brand new beautiful entrance - it no longer looks like some big old parking lot!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You see Marilyn, Kell likes to buy plants. She even buys plants FOR people. She just has a problem with the follow through! LOL She bought me a Gunnera and won't give it to me. :) Okay, it's not that she won't. She just hasn't. LOL

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya pekasky,

I was last at BBG in 1990 and previously to say goodbye to the gardens after defending a laborious doctoral thesis in 1983. So I guess you could say I'm a big old parking lot guy. I was told by a colleague on faculty that lots of changes had been made. Yet whenever my wife and I get up to The City there never seems to be enough time to visit campus or the gardens. We did get to the Strybing on our last trip, but only as we were leaving to head back down here in this part of the state. I sometimes visit the collection via the internet regarding specific plants but haven't yet been to the link you shared. Thank you.

Is it still a peaceful place? or did all of the improvements turn it into Longwood Gardens?...lol.

I'm so glad you got a chance to share the gardens with others. Hopefully Pam and I will get to visit next time were up getting a culture fix in The City.

best,
don

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Badseed - Oh, I see!!! I knew from our first meeting that she was a plant nut. I just didn't know she was a SELFISH plant nut!! LOL HEHEHEHEHE Actually, if she doesn't follow through, I'll tell you what color her hair REALLY is!!! ((((((GRIN)))))

Hi drdon - Boy, you go all the way back to the Garden having the parking lot right within the grounds!! In addition to the brand spanking new entrance, we have a wonderful new Arid house for the cactus and succulent collection that's only a few years old. Plans are underway to expand the plant deck (where we sell plants daily) by 60%, which will help a great deal. We also have a new volunteer facilitator (my boss) who is just fantastic. Most of the hort staff are Ph.D.s, have been there for many years, and all of them are extremely dedicated to the work they do.

The other volunteers are really nice people who have a lot of experience in their respective areas. I count on that a lot since mine is fairly narrow - cactus, succulents and bulbs. I know about a lot of common plants, too, but I certainly don't have the extensive knowledge that many of the other volunteers do. But the one area that most of them don't know IS cactus and succulents, so I guess it evens out.

Last but certainly not least, after having several directors who were basically there in name only (and to have the position added to their curriculum vitae), our new director (as of July 1, 2003) is completely involved in the Garden. He retired from UC after being a full professor, department head and chairman in several departments over the years. He really knows his way around the UC bureaucracy, and has been able to accomplish a lot of tasks because of that. I think he's having as much fun as we are, and he's a delight to work with.

Can you tell I really enjoy volunteering there? Hope you can come to the Garden the next time you're up this way. It's still a very peaceful place. If so, let me know.

I'm not familiar with the situation at Longwood Gardens. What happened there?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

It is a beautiful and enjoyable walk, so much to see, little surprises of different plants at every turn. I saw things I didn't notice 1 1/2 years ago. Talkng with Marilyn and seeing all the other volunteers made me wish I lived closer. I would learn so much.
