There is a wooded area on the property next to mine where Blue Morning Glory Vines grow everywhere. The flowers are beautiful, but the vines insist on coming through the fence and growing into my camellia garden. I wish they did not grow so fast and make me work so hard to control them, but I guess that is part of this gardening thing that we do.
Blue Morning Glory
camelliagirl - I'm wondering if the flower you posted is producing seeds...I'd like to trade you for some if it is...
Please let me know either here or by D-mail...
Thanks...
My goodnes!.....It's beautiful!
HOW BEAUTIFUL....
where in savanah are you. we go almost every year and i have never noticed a mg like that before. if i did i would be stopping. hehe
if theydo seed i would love some. see might have to talk hubby into a day trip hehe
camelliagirl,
Does the actual color of the blooms match the color that appears in the photo? Sometimes cameras do not reproduce color accuratly.

Yes it is the accurate color. I'm not good a photo-editing yet. I took it in the middle of the day in the shade. I have just purchased a new camera, an Olympus E-volt which is a SLR and it is the best, user friendly camera I have ever had. The colors and the clarity is amazing with this 8 megapixel camera - although it takes up a great deal of space on my hard-drive.
This is a Morning Glory and in Savannah they grow rampant in unkept areas and most people consider them weeds. I don't know of anyone who actually grows them for pleasure although they are very beautiful. This color is very common around here.
Ron, Kevin, anyone....
Could this be I. indica?
looks like Ipomoea indica to me
camelliagirl's photos look just like my indica (Well, Emma, our indica!) but it has a much more intense blue.
Ron, could it be a mutant? Or...?
camelliagirl,
How late into the day do the blooms last?
And does it change color during the day?
Kevin,
It seems to have a more intense color later in the day, but that could be just my imagination. The bloom in the picture from yesterday was closed up by 2:30 in the afternoon. I will try to monitor the time of closing over the weekend, and report back with better specifics.
Emma and Kevin - Yes,I could see that it was Ipomoea indica from the first picture posted...the young flowerbuds to the right of the flower gave the ID away...and that is why I asked if it was producing any seeds...the colors on the I.indica's vary, and so does the leaf forms, but the sepals don't...
camelliagirl - is your 'wickedly' invasive plant producing any(!) seeds...all responses are optional of course and you can just continue to ignore my question, since that is your choice...I shall continue to forge ahead with the MG's either way...
Ron, Thanks for your thoughts on this Morning Glory. Please excuse my delay in responding to your question about whether or not this vine produces seed. I have looked, but have not seen any seed so far. That does not mean that there are no seed, but I have not found any yet. If I find seed, I will gladly share them with you and anyone else that is interested in them. What would the seed pods look like on this vine? Also, is there some specific place on the vine that I should be looking for these possible seed. Thanks for your help.
camelliagirl - Thanks for your response...the link to what the seedpods look like is here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/68661/
The first first flowers from the vine produce the first seedpods and these would usually be located near the base of the vine stem, but this species is very often the result of spread from clonal beach colonization, and the clonal plants rarely, produce seeds, but sometimes some seedpods are produced...if you mark some of the recent flowers and notice that after about a week that the entire outer flower, including the sepals has dropped offof the plant, then you've probably got a clonal plant that will produce very few seedpods...but you may find some...let us know...
Thanks for sharing(!)...

It is very pretty and I would like to get on the list for seed if it produces any. I sure hope it does. The color is a deep and electic as the no Umi "Sea"..........I really like it and would be intrested in knowing if it did change colors. Does it get more of a Mauve Blue as the day wears on? Have you noticed how long the blooms stay open and if they stay open more in shade than sun?
Dee
WillowWasps,
The color appears to me to intensify as the day goes on. I have noticed that the blooms begin to close aroung 2:00 PM here., and the blooms in the sun and the shade seem to close about the same time. I am still looking for seed, but have not found them yet. If I do, I will gladly share them.
This is my favorite color for morning glories. If you do find those elusive seeds -- and if there are any left after you've sent some to all those who have already asked for some -- I'd love to have some, too! I'll pay for your mailing expenses, of course.
