Oh boy, that is beautiful.. it looks great.. and it produces seeds...woweee.

How old is your plant.. mine doesn't want to bloom, it is still in the four inch pot it came in. Should i transplant this baby into a bigger pot?

ahelms,
LOVE YOUR VINE.
I tried last year to germinate seeds with no luck.
Gonna give it another try over the winter.

Thanks so much for sharing.

The very first(!) picture that I've seen of a seedpod of Ipomoea platensis (actually I.platense is an outdated term used by some commercial sources )...Congratulations(!)...a nice closeup of the seedpod would be a great(!) addition to the database...

Hi Ron,

If 'plantense' is outdated, what is the current
description?

Thank you,

Taramark

Hi Taramark,
I have the updated term mentioned in the first sentence in my post above and that is Ipomoea platensis...
Hope that helps...

I don't know if anyone has done this, but, last year some of the vines broke off the main plant with the caudex. So, I put them into water and they rooted. They are very healthy today and even though they will not form a caudex, hopefully they will bloom. If you all cut them down for the winter, try rooting them.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Antionette. I'll try that.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

ahelms - Thanks for the picture

Gourd - rooted cuttings from caudiciform plants if kept going, will eventually produce a caudiciform root...keep the cuttings going and you will see...

oooooooh,, Ron,

That is great to know. I have a cissus tuberosa that is doing that. The cuttings are about two years old on this one, but they are definitely getting budda looking.

Ron, does the I. Platensis need a couple of years to bloom? I've not fertilized it ever.. maybe I needed to do that. And Ron, Thank you for everything you help us with.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Gourd - Thanks for the thanks, but trying to help is why I am here...Many of the perennial species need at least 2 or more years to bloom, but if you got your plant from Logees, the plants they send out are usually of blooming age...Did you buy your I.platensis as a plant or did you grow it from seed...a little phosphorus won't hurt it...may help to stimulate the blooms and is good for the roots...

I got a couple of these plants at a cactus place here in CA, Grigsbys Cactus. They have lots of the caudex forming succulents, etc. They were a good size then, so this would be their second year with me. I really need to repot all these, because they just look like they need it. They are potted up with good drainage like the cactus normally are. Maybe I need to change the soil?

Mesilla Park, NM

This is the size they were about a year ago or a little longer than that. They are still in those pots. 4inch.. (old photo)

Gourd - I had one last year that had a root smaller than any of those, but had three vining stems about 4 feet each and flowered fine...I tried to overwinter it outdoors and that 'didn't work'...I do what everybody says not to...I feed mine extravagantly(!)...and they have never failed me...but soil high in the 3 macronutrients may not work for every location and situation...I still think a phosphorus treat wouldn't hurt them...

That is really pretty!

Very pretty, ahelms! Did you start it from seeds?

Gourd yours are cute!
:) Donna

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Donna, I didn't start my first one from seed. I got it from Logee's or Karutz's. I take both in the greehouse for the winter.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Both places do have some neat plants.
:) Donna
