Gardening with Texas Native Plants & Wildflowers Part 9

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

You know, Carol's comment about wanting to see some pictures of other's yards reminded me. There is a thread on the Dave's Garden Forum, requesting a Garden Tour Forum: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/560061/ .

We would enter a pictorial "tour" of our garden/gardens in our diary, then go to the forum and start a post, inviting people to take the tour (and posting the link). The diary allows us to post the pictures and commentary without interruption, and to make edits if necessary, the forum thread would be questions and discussion, feedback, etc.

Certainly, we can each post a garden tour in our diaries and then start a thread with an invitation in any forum, but the Garden Tour Forum would be a centralized place for people to look for who has these tours in their diaries.

This would be a great way to show people our natives in the context of the garden. How about it? If you like the idea, please show some support on the thread linked above.

Thanks!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mary, I think that is a great idea, maybe others will too.
What do we have to do to get it started?
I for one don't have a diary yet and it would take me some time, but I think it is a great idea.
Josephine.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I for one found the Diary hard to figure out...

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Really? I think the Diary is pretty neat, think it's pretty user-friendly. That's the Diary, not the Journal

At the top of this screen, click on the tab "Journals". On the next page, click "Manage your own garden diary". What I like about the diary is that it's very like your own, personal forum. You basically start your own threads, for whatever topics you want to. The differences are:
1) You will be the only person posting on the threads.
2) You decide on the dates of each posting (so if you want to enter something that happened in 2003, you can give it that date. If you don't care about the dates, it will default to the date you are writing the entry.)
3) You can edit not only your comments, but the pictures as well.

In the diary, "tabs" are basically the individual threads, so you would name them like you name a thread. You can rename a tab (you can't rename a thread on the forums) and you can delete an entire tab (you can't delete threads on the forums.) You can also choose to make any or all of your tabs private. You add entries to each tab, which is the equivalent of posting to a thread.

If you want to get an idea what they look like, here's mine: http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/m/maggiemoo/ .

My only complaint about the diary right now is that when you look at a tab, for instance my "Roses I have Known and Loved", the top entry is actually the last post I made. Some people wanted it that way, but I've asked Dave to somehow make that optional, because I like to tell stories, and most are dependent on dates (still waiting on him). So if you read my rose tab, please start at the bottom and go up. :-)

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I will check it out.. to many choices it what I first saw! Wil get over there and take a peek.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

How do I get to find the Moon Calendar by Donna?

BTW - I do like the way it is laid out how do I get it all started?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Just click on "Journals" at the top of this page, then "Manage your own garden diary", and then start adding tabs, and entries to the tabs.

About Donna's Moon calendar.... the link doesn't take you to it? Maybe I can see it because I have "permission" on her website. I'll see if I can find a way to post it as a picture.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I can see it on your but I cannot go to her site and find it (yes I am thinking of the best days to plant my seeds after the new year and the days in March to plant them in the garden - did I mention I hate winter yet?)

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

We'll have to get Donna to work on next year's, December is the last month she posted. Maybe if we ask real nice. :-)

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

:-) will ask really nice!

Alright I set up soem tabs and added my DL info... it is a lot better then the Journal!!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Amen to that!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I had tried the Journal and yikes - way toooooo hard to find what I needed to do. Thank you sooooo much Mary!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Awww, it's nuthin'. :-)

How about some support for the Garden Tour Forum?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Alright alright - after the bad press I got from the black list idea I have stayed away from that forum but I will get over there now.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Mitch! (You got bad press? You'll have to tell me about that some day.)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

By the way, did i mention that I hate winter too?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Check it out http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/551988/ very bad press - but Terry stood up for me and now the plant files home page looks a little better IMHO.

The big reason we stayed here was the light winters.. .. .. already after yesterday we started talking about warmer climates to live in... At least Chi likes to get all wrapped up so that helps :-)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, I didn't know about the new features on the plant files homepage.
When I go there it is just to check a plant , or to add one, so I never looked below that area, but it is interesting to see, I will be checking it more often.
Thank you for telling us about it, and for the link to the tread, you do come up with some neat ideas.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I went to the journals and I started a diary, I coudn't think of anything else, so I started one on Frostweed, I intend to put all the different stages of its growth there, so I think it will be interesting, we shall see.
Josephine.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Terrific! See, the diary really is easy. You'll soon start seeing other ways to use it, you'll think of ways to do virtual tours of your garden. I'll certainly work on the transformation of my garden from shade to sun, and the changes as I have been developing the different areas. Good cold weather stuff to do.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

:-) Thank you Frsotweed, I took a lot of heat for that one but I love the way it works now.

Here is a picture of the last patches of color in the backyard taken before the freeze.

And picture of our now nude Tamopan Persimmon tree, showing the fruit.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Josephine, the Persimmon tree looks like it has ornaments on it, very pretty! What does your slope look like in the winter? Do you cut it all back and mulch it?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I do cut it back by hand, and I am in the process of doing that now, it normally takes me 8 or 9 hours so I do it in stages, it is very hard on the old legs, but worth it. When it is done I will post a picture too, and may be use the different seasons for the garden diary.
Josephine.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, that will make a very lovely diary! It will really show how much one area can change and look so pretty through the different seasons, a great lesson for us all!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Merry Christmas to all our friends at Dave's Garden, I would name you all, but I am affraid I might miss someone. May the Lord Jesus bless you all today and always.
Love, Josephine and Frank.

Here is a lovely card for you. http://holidays.blastcomm.com/holidays03.html

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Merry Christmas to the both of you! Glad to see someone is more spirited than I am this Christmas. I didn't do anything inside and very little outside this year. That is very unlike us, but this has been a crazy year. Hope the New Year brings a renewed happiness for all!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 7b)

Merry CHRISTmas to all!!!

Josephine, I love your nativity display! Thanks for posting a pic for us to see.

We have spent this week cutting down the perennials in our yard, and chipping/shredding as we go!!!! WHAT WORK!!! Poor Mike has spent his entire vacation working in the yard! He'll be ready to go back to work, for a break!!!

Wishing each fellow gardener a happy, safe and joyful holiday spending time with those you love, in memory, thought or presence.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Melanie! Give Mike a break, it's Christmas! LOL!

I noticed your "CHRISTmas", and am thankful for those of you who choose to keep Christ in Christmas this year. My radio station(KLTY 94.1) has a push going this year as do others. So many people are using "holiday or xmas", I am glad they are reminding everyone the reason for the season, and keeping Christ in Christmas. May you and yours be blessed!
Sheila

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Mel and Sheila, you are right, we are getting too politically correct, but the way I see it, if we love Jesus, let us not be affraid to say it.

I love that Nativity too Mel, those figures are so innocent and funny at the same time, they are just adorable.

Josephine.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Merry Christmas to you all! My son, Adam, and I are driving to New Mexico as soon as I get off work this afternoon. We'll be spending the week with family at my father-in-law's, about 20 of us!

Everyone stay safe, and I'll see you in 2006!

Mary

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Dear Mary, have a good safe trip and a Christmas celebration filled with love.
How good for your father in law that so many of his family are coming to see him.
May the Lord be with him and comfort him, as he is about to enter into another
phase in his life.
Love, Josephine.

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

May the God of your choice bless you and yours this holiday season.

Luv and hugs to all !!!!!

Happy New Year everyone!

Adam and I got back from New Mexico yesterday, very blessed from the trip. I picked up a cold in Santa Fe and have gone from hoarse to no voice at all. As soon as I have more energy, I will share more about the trip. It was nice to come home, and a little strange to find more blooms in my garden than when I left!

Many interesting natives in NM, but I couldn't find anyone who knew anything about them!

Congratulations to Hazel, Josephine, and Mitch for your photo contest winning entries!

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

WHAT.....maggiemoo without a voice ????? This I've got to hear....

PS: yes, Sweetheart, that's the 1st cut of the new year. (luvya)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Everyone!
Our little group did very well in the photo contest. As far as I could tell these were the results, of course I may have missed some, and if so, I apologize.

Htop ( Hazel ) 6 pictures.
Trunnels ( Tracy) 4 pictures.
Frostweed ( Josephine) 4 pictures.
75154 ( Mitch ) 2 pictures.
Maggiemoo ( Mary ) 1 picture.

All the pictures in the contest were beautiful, and I can see how some that should have been picked, may not have been because of the sheer number of pictures.
I for one, didn't have the patience, or time, to enlarge every single one and really check them out, and I suspect that the same thing happened to a lot of people.
I beleive that the person with the most winning pictures is Todd Boland.

Congratulations to every one! It was a lot of fun.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I hope everyone has a wonderful 2006. Mary, thanks for the congratulations and congrats to you too. I had not had the time to enter photos until the very last minutes of the contest and time ran out before I could finish. I appreciate that several were selected as winners. Congratulations to Tracy, Josephine, Mitch and Mary and everyone who entered such fabulous photos. I spent days choosing the ones for which I voted.

Kipper, the first cut of the year ... congrats to you too.
