My First

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

This is my first year growing Morning Glory's and have fallen in love with them. I have already gotten quite a few seeds of 3 different vines. One thing I found strange was one of the vines that I started grew like crazy and is one of the biggest I have but it has yet to bloom, I also planted a cigar vine in the same spot and those are blooming in the MG bush so if it wasn't for those blooms which are small to say the least I wouldn't have any color there, so that has stumped me..
Here are the ones I have but not sure what there name might be..Any guess??

This one is my favorite very large bloom I have growing around a tall piece of drift wood that was very unique looking and has done very well..

Hello vswilliams - Your soil may be too rich or you fertilized your plants. Fertile soil will cause great foliage, but hardly produce any blooms if any at all. Has happened to me in the past and I remember using peat moss or manure to richen the soil prior to planting. I think it is the high nitrogen that causes them to grow like crazy, but also causes a low reproductive action. Morning Glories thrive better in poor soil. For example plain sandy soil or clay rocky soil. Also standard potting mix works well for continuous blooming. Hope this is helpful. BTW nice photos!!! If you like growing morning glories then you're in for a treat because there are so many different kinds and most are very easy to grow!!!!

Thanks so much for your kind words but so many of you have such beautiful gardens and I am so jealous, but I have a vision for one day to have mine much better. I can say my soil I have here is very poor being it's red clay but I have over the years added plain potting mix and mulch to it but I have not fertilized at all so this is a mystery to me..The rest would have been much better if the Beatles hadn't been eating them like crazy. Also I am very much looking for all the different varieties of seeds to start next year and then I know I will be going crazy..I have fallen for these beauties..

Hi VS,

Heavenly Blue was my first mg too, isn't it fantastic?? I also grew Scarlett O'Hara and Grandpa Otts that first year or two. Welcome to the world of morning glories!!

Joseph

PS very nice pictures! What is the name of the pink and purple ones do you remember?

Joseph all I know was the package said old fashion, but I do love them and you can say I have found a new addiction. All I need is more variety, but how many is too many or is that possible. I wasn't sure what the blue ones were called so thank you for putting a name to them.
Dee those are really beautiful and they do produce lots of seeds, I just wish they would just reproduce themselves but they have been easy from seed, except for the one bush I have the only blooms I have is the cigar vine growing in it..
Thank you all for your words of encouragement and I look forward to spring and hope I can have them all over my fence in the back yard by then.
