We finally have our new puppy home.

Here's Cooper, a boy black lab at 8 weeks on Aug 15, weighing in at 14.3 lbs

He's got such personality, and likes to have someone around. He's such a suck... will go to anyone now and ask to be picked up so he can chew on your nose

He's not sleeping the night through but does sleep 2-3 hours at a time. Good thing he's sleeping now, at my feet, so I can get some computer time.
Here he is yesterday when we were still camping and he's trying to keep his nose warm

this isn't the best shot, but you can see that's he's very confortable on his new mat. I think he'll quickly grow into it.
Yesterday at the vets when he got his first shots ( he was very good), the vet said that he will double his weight in the next month, and then double it again probably in the month after that.

His mat is in the kitchen, next to my computer.

I'll be getting better pictures and post some more, if you'd like, ;)) LOL over the next little while.

We visited with Nightowl2 and her family and her dog Harley on Thursday too. Harley was so well behaved. Sandy has a lovely garden, it's obvious an unending project and that lots of hard work has gone into it. We had a great visit sitting in the sun in her garden.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Oh Linda I'm so excited for you both!
What a joy to have such a new love in your lives. He looks adorable.
I did have a chuckle when you said that he'll double his weight in a bit cause you know what else will double. I hope your shovel is big enough!! LOL
Please give Cooper a kiss for me.
Ann

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

oh no Ann, LOL that's going to double too??? It's big already for a guy his size! He got a kiss from you, and has snuggled back down and is off again to dreamland.

Cooper is definitely a cutie!

Am So glad you found a new puppy to love. I know how hard it was for you a few months ago. What a sweetie. Shows? Obedient classes? At least puppy classes?

However, puppies CHEW. Are brugs poisonous? I know oleander is. Can't remember if you have an oleander in your oh so full greenhouse.

Maybe gates will be the order of the day for a bit, until all his teeth are in. You have wooden furniture, just yum for new teeth.

With our puppies, we kept their crate open all the time so he had a 'house' of is own. They were quite happy to be in there when we were going out for a few hours. NOt too many hours though.

Have fn playing with him.

Puppy, puppy, PUPPY!!!! What a cutie....Great pics, Linda. It must be so nice to have a dog in the house once again. I'm sending him a big hug, and one for you too. More pics please, when you get a chance! :-)

Great pictures Linda. He's so sweet....I could have cuddled him forever. It looks like he's pretty spoiled already.....lots of toys. That's a very nice mat he has. Harley would never leave a mat like that alone. He's always chewing his bed and he drags it around and sleeps under it upside down more than he ever does on top.

Sandy

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

What a sweetheart Linda! I'm so happy that you and Cheryl have a new bundle of sweet smelling/furniture (or garden hose;) chewing puppy to love. Ü

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

I got to visit with Linda yesterday and meet Cooper. He is adorable ! I also think he is a very lucky puppy to get such great parents !!
Heather
(Her brugs aren't too shabby either, LOL)

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

I just want to reach out and touch him. He looks soooo soft in your pictures. Don't you wish they could stay puppies forever?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Here's one of Nightowl2 when we went to see her, just a couple of hours after getting him.

Ginny, he's already figured out how to get over the barricade out of hte kitchen, so tomorrow we'll be checking out the 2nd hand stores for baby gates. We are crate training him, and he's been really good with that. Yes Ginny brugs are poisonous, so we've been erally careful picking up allthe dropped leaves and flowers and keeping an eye on him when he's outside. So far... he hasn't found the pond.

When we were at nightowl2s place, just having a drink nad keeping an eye on Harley, Sandy's dog that was so well behaved.

He's so adorable. I'm sure he will go all the way to healing that hole left in your hearts. Cooper is a great name for him.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

What an adorable, cuddly, wonderful little bundle of fur and wet kisses! Thanks for sharing Linda. I especially like the last pic with Cooper's little pink tongue sticking out. That is soooooooo cute! --Ginny (the other one)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Baby gates. Really difficult to find. very expensive new. Try Abracadabra, Oak Bay Ave & Foul Bay . I've found a couple there for Sebastian - long time ago though. Took me 8 months to find 2 second hand ones. Haunt VV. Go onto Victoria Garage Sale (ifthere is such a site and ask) You can also ask on Victoria Freecycle..

Good luck.

That last picture is particularly cute! How big his paws look, in comparison to the rest of him! :-)

What a cutie!! Congrats Linda, black labs are such wonderful pets, very loyal and gentle too. Please give him a big hug and kiss for me!

Linda
Cooper 's not spoiled already is he? He didn't even get off your lap for a drink....LOL. What are you going to do when he is 80 lbs?
I can see him already sitting at the t.v. , sitting at the table, sitting on you LOL again. Cooper sure hit my happy buttons.
Thankyou for sharing the important moments.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

What a beautiful face he has! You must just love him to pieces. Is he following you everywhere?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Re baby gates: another option is get a large x-pen to contain him in the room of your choice. Or - if you can find a used one cheap you could take of one section and make a gate.

Prepare to have a teenager in your house for a long time! And start him in puppy class and then obedience ASAP. He looks like a sweetie and I dont know your dog experience (I have 2 shelties) but I do know that the dogs that are the least trained at the off leash dog park I frequent tend to be the black and yellow labs and goldens!

carol

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Ann yes, he's spoiled already, this morning at 4 we couldn't stand the whimpering and got him in bed with us... a no no I agree, and we promised we wouldn't do it again... until the next time...

We have borrowed a baby gate and an x-pen. The gate works well. I put him in the x-pen while I was working in the yard last evening, He was about 5' away and you'd think we were torturing him by the comotion he put up. We'll try the x-pen again today until he's used to it.

We do have him enrolled in puppy classes starting Oct. 1 for 8 weeks. There's 5 golden retrevors(sp) amd he's the lone black sheep ... er Lab.

Liz... I heard that you have a new puppy too... do tell! And that's a lovely double pink brug you posted in the brug forum. WTG.

I'd get some pictures of him in action, but he moves so fast, I can't focus that fast or keep him in the frame, so it's only been sleeping shots we've got so far, but it's not for lack of trying.

Linda

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

He'll get used to it ! Where do you have him sleeping at night? If you have a small crate beside your bed that should work (unless of course he really needs to pee)although it must be hard to ignore the whimpering!

carol

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Carol, we do have a crate at the end of the bed, and after soiling it last night for the first time, it will be downsized to a crate more his size. I could've crawled into the other one. It's kinda big for him.. LOL

Linda

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yes you have to be careful about the size with a pup - should only be big enough for them to lie down, stand and turn around! Otherwise they can pee/poop in one corner and still have a dry corner to lie in! But you could probably 'downsize' your big crate with some sturdy cardboard.
If you have a small crate for him you could maybe try putting it right beside the head of the bed - if space allows - so he is close to you.

Hi Linda, yes we picked up Barney last Friday. We have grown very attached to him in such a short time. We haven't had a dog in two years and Beans, our last dog, a Beardie, lived for 15 years so like you, we're going through a re-learning experience. Good Luck to us both, lol.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Linda
Don't those cries just get to you? It's so heartwrenching.
I agree with the crate thing. We were very dilligent with our Cleo and when she went out to pee I always said the same word. I can ask her to go "pottie" and she will pee. The crate and the word came in very handy when she had to take a plane ride and they lost her cause I was able to tell the airline guy who found her to talk to her and have her on her leash take her to a spot of grass and tell her to go , then he could give her the word to get back in her kennel. Because she was used to her kennel she was very easy for him to look after and he called me back just amazed at how easy it had been. No extra trama for Cleo and she knew her kennel was a safe place to be.
It also works well when you visit folks who don't have dogs and yours is well behaved in a crate.
All in all this is a great tool for you and Cooper even if it's hard to get started!

Liz ..you have a new baby too! Do you need the same shovel size for Barney as Linda does for Cooper?
All the best for you new adventures and am looking for new news.
Ann

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I do have new puppy but this is Cooper's thread and he is so handsome he deserves his time in the spotlight.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

oh but Liz, lets see Barney. I'm sure I"m not the only one that loves looking at new puppy pictures. Are you exhausted yet from getting up in the middle of the night? Ive been told it's just like having a baby, but what the blazes do I know about having kids?!

Dundas,, ON(Zone 5b)

Cooper looks like a real sweetheart. What a fun time you're going to have with him.
Keep that camera handy - I really want to see pics when he discovers the pond !!

Puppy classes. Mainly to socialize. VIP to practice exercises you are given. This is really really important. Daily please. You will be given words to use, and use them for certain things. ONLY THEM. EG: if you are taught to use 'Off" to stop kiddo jumping on you or others, never use anything else. Don't use down, stick to what you have been taught. And ..... do not let others use diff. words either. Explain that the word for whatever is .... whatever. Lots of rewards when an action performed properly.

My rewards are all liver pieces baked slowly in the oven and then cut up. Get yourself a bum pack fanny pack, something like that so you have both hands free - one for holding leash and one for petting. Then you can just easily get a goodie out of your goodie pack.

Crate your Cooper in the car/truck. Start right away so it is a normal thing for him. (The crate). If he doesn't like the vehicle, take him on lots of trips. Park the vehicle somewhere, and leave. Get out of sight so he can't smell you. For about 5 mins. no more. Then go back. Do this daily till he stops shouting. Never take him out of crate if he is shouting. He has to settle down and be totally quiet before you let him out. Windows open a bit of course.

You lucky things.

Cooper and Barney - youngest DG members.

If he bites/nips someone - anyone - don't smack him. Take his nose and shake it back & forth while saying wahtever your No word is. Friendly but firm voice please.

All this is probably teaching grandmothers to suck eggs ..... but still.

Inanda

Linda, he's absolutely lovely. I'm sure you're all having a great time. I just love puppies.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Hi Linda and Cheryl
Well, isn't he just loverly! Remember that like most baby peeps he won't be soiling when he goes to kindergarten....hard to keep in perspective now, though. Hi Cooper, Hugs to you, and Kisses too. I almost envy you and Liz with your new babes, but I am so thrilled Clancy has recovered with his knee-do and can do everything but rough play with other dogs. So I am content.
If you can find one, our son gave me years ago a portable pen, 8 sections of 4ft. which goes on ground, morphs into shape, makes great gates, powder coated white, folds for portability. He got it for my Maltese puppies for Savary sand or grass. It has proven invaluable for keeping Clancy from harm. My ex pens for the Malts were only 3ft x 4ft (about the size of Clance). I am so glad I kept this one!
Love, Love, Love and Laughter
to you and Cooper

Hey ginny, didn't know amoung all your other prodigious talents, you are dog trainer too. Good advice.

Cooper and his mom's came to visit today. Is he ever sweet! Oscar and Molly both liked him but I didn't want Oscar to get too exhuberant with him so I kept him on a lead.
