This is a regular size sinningia, but one of the more compact ones. The pic is of a young plant (maybe 2 years old) in a 4" square pot. I grow it with the AVs (but with a little less water). It forms a tuber at the soil line - I'm quite in love with it.
I think first blooms might have taken close to a year from sowing. I sowed a batch of the same seeds a couple of months ago and got what I guess to be about 200% germination. If you've never tried a non-AV gesneriad, or tried anything from seed, I would recommend this one (if you like it, of course).
I have enough for ELEVEN people. Same as the others - please post here so others can see if any are left. Then, dmail me your address. This is a freebie offer (no postage, no nothing) so I just ask that you share the love.
have Sinningia cardinalis seeds
One packet is accounted for.
Keyring I would love some of that! I am in the address exchange.

I notice the responses are not exactly pouring in... put me on the "if there are leftovers" list, I needn't be greedy :)

I was hesitant because DH got me a little "lipstick plant" for Valentine's Day, and first I overwatered it, and then I underwatered it, and then it was no more. But I know Sarah will help me get it right, so pretty please would you put a few of these seeds in with the others you're so generously sending?
Keyring, will these seedlings do OK at my cooler basement temperatures, or do I need to set up a light shelf upstairs? I doubt the basement ever gets below 50', and it's probably generally more like 60 in the winter.
Thanks!!
Okay, if there's no need to hesitate-- you talked me into it!! I would really love to try these, too, especially if you say they're good for non-AV gesneriad and seed beginners. :) They sound like the ones for me!
Thanks so much for sharing.

Critterlgst - that might be a bit low. Rule of thumb is 70-78F stable temps, so your temp might be too low, and if it drops at night, the fluctuation would not be helpful.
I don't use heating mats for bottom heat but I put mine on an upper shelf so that the lights on the shelf bellow provide some heat.
ooh, Keyring, that's really smart... I wouldn't have thought of that (at least not for about 2 more years! :). I'll have to get the next shelf up and runny and move some mature plants down there so I can give the "new babies" some more warmth. BTW, I found your thread and link about germinating your seeds... THANK YOU!!! That is going to be sooo helpful! :)
Sarah
Do you still have some left over? I would love to try it!
Thank you, Ana
OK... If I do end up putting them on the basement shelves, I'll probably set them up on one of my seedling heat mats, and that should do the trick. Thanks!
Heather and Ana - I need your addresses. I'm not in the address exchange.
I have 5 of these left.
okay, one more is taken.
Please POST HERE FIRST, and then dmail me your address. It makes it easier for others to see if there are any left, and for me to keep track. Thanks.
There are 4 left.
Hi Keyring,
Could I possibly have a packet? I would like to try these too. D-mail sent.
Thanks,
Eric

Patti-your envelope is already posted - sorry I didn't see this one in time.
Everyone's seeds are in the mailbox except AnaM149 - still need your addy.
Keyring no problem . Thank you for your generous offer. Patti
Keyring - received your seeds today. Again thanks for your kindness - can't wait to see how these do for me. It will be the first time I've tried to start houseplants from seed.
My seeds arrived today!! :) Hooray! :) Thank you so much Keyring! I'm so excited to pot them up, but I guess I have to repot my existing Sinningia first. I didn't realize it needed it. You should have heard my grandma gasp when I told her the tuber is touching both sides of the pot! lol... Thank you so much! :)
Sarah
Yay, my seeds arrived, too!! Thank you so much for sharing. :)

well I was reading the last issues of the Gloxinian (the AGGS journal) and it has a few articles on this one. There are peloric forms and an alba as well. In fact, you can see some of the forms at http://gesneriads.ca/sinni004.htm
It comes from Brazil, and first arrived in Europe in the mid-1880s. I'm not sure when it arrived in the U.S. It was orginially called a Gesneria, and then Rechsteineria. Only in the 1970s did they move it to Sinningia. One of the reasons for this is that it can be crossed easily with Sinningia eumorpha.
Apparently it has been used a lot in hybridizing, and is in the parentage of some of the mini sinns like S. 'Cherry Chips' and S. 'Super Orange'. http://gesneriads.ca/sinnin35.htm These would be brightly colored minis.
It likes a very porous soil and when grown under lights has basically no dormant period - nice to know that the guru agrees with me :-) He also says wevryone should have one.
Thank you keyring.... got mine too! Very special of you to share.
Sanna
