I picked up nice 5 foot weeping cherry on clearance for under $30. Since we're thinking about moving in maybe five or so years, I would want to take this tree with me. Can I grow this tree in a whiskey barrel? Tag says its hardy zone 4-9 and I'm in zone 5.
Any insight appreciated!
Thanks,
Sandy
Can I Grow Weeping Cherry in a Whiskey Barrel?
Sandy, the tree might be rated to zone 4 (?) but the roots probably will not survive above-ground winter temperatures here in zone 5. I suppose you could sink the barrel into the ground every fall, or surround it with mulch up to the rim, or bring it into your garage for the winter, etc. Also, If you keep it potted for several years, the roots might be unsalvageable when you try to plant it in the ground due to circling in the barrel.
I think I would plant it out, then decide at moving time if I want to transplant it B&B to my new house or just start over. Annual root pruning with a razor-sharp tile spade could make that job much easier.

Thanks for your help! The ground it is :0)
