I recieved seeds of this vine from a friend of mine and I know little about it, I have looked it up on the net and found out that it was used as a hallucinogen by the Mexican people in ages past and in present day. Does anyone grow this vine or is it a no, no?? We grow other plants like the angel trumpets that were used also for similar reasons. I live in an area where the Mexican and Quatamalen people are plentiful and I already grow several types of plants that are native to thier land and used for religious ceremony, I don't want them thinking I am growing these plants for that reason. So if anyone can enlighten me on whether this plant is grown by Morning Glory collectors I would appreciate it.
Thanks!!
Connie
Rivea Corymbosa - Morning Glory
Connie-
I think it is just like the poppies and morning glories...some people grow it for viewing pleasure and some grow it for "other " pleasure.
It isn't illegal to grow rivea , so don't let it bother you....
People grow papaver somniferum(which IS illegal) all the time, and the laws are rarely enforced.
I asked an "official" once, if it were worth even growing poppies...he said that the only time the law is enforced is if neighbors report you and upon inspection, it is discovered that your pods have been scraped for latex...
Other than that , no worries...

I have to admit that I have planted some, but do not know where the seedling is. I will definitely try again, the white flower is so pretty. I think it is also known as "semilla de la virgincita".
I have two unidentified vines that I will take photos of, but I am not sure if it has a heart shaped leaf or not. Gonna go check it out on google.
Connie - The plant that you are refferring to as 'Rivea' corymbosa is more accurately Turbina corymbosa,as genetic analysis has revealed that this plant is genetically a Turbina and has been placed in that genus...Although,most websites are not using the current accepted botanically correct name and simply 'parrott' what is on the 'let's get stoned on organics' websites...it is an interesting addition to any ornamental MG collection...The clusters of blooms are striking and very showy...The seeds are very often difficult to germinate and are very susceptible to pathogenic infection...but,some nurseries do offer plants or you might get lucky with sprouting your seeds...
Enjoy(!)...
Thanks for the info everyone and I will keep in mind what you said Ron about the seeds, I will treat them and the soil before germination. The bloom was on one of the websites I looked at and it is a very pretty flower so I will try them out. I plan to grow some in pots and some in the ground. If they grow for me I will share with photo's.
Connie
i grow it and am still waiting for blooms. i've never heard anything about it being illegal.
the psychotropic constituents are similar to that in some of the Ipomoea cultivars including "heavenly blue" and "pearly gates." LSA (d-lysergic acid amide) is an LSD derivitive and you'd have to ingest a large number of seeds for anyeffect to take hold, so unless you have a grove of T. corymbosa i doubt anyone would suspect you're using it for illicit purposes. The leaves are so lime green it makes a great accent plant.
naien,
If you have a photo of your plant, could you please post it, I would love to see it. Thanks for the info on this.
Antoinette
the T. corymbosa leaves have a super-high gloss, your look pretty matte. also, the veining isn't as prominent on mine.
i'm no expert, though.
Okay, yeah, looks like mine have no gloss at all.. they are very thick leaves (kind of fleshy) for being MGs. I will have to try again with the T. corymbosa this January. Sometimes I start so many MGs, that towards the end of transplanting I am so tired of them that I just start potting them up wherever I have room, then think I can figure it out later.. NOT... lolol
Thanks for your help naien.
