Purple Plumerias???

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Yesterday we had a get together for friends here on the island that have birthdays this month and one of our guests happens to own a nursery.

Since he knows I am planting a plumeria garden he offered a cutting from his rainbow and this new arrival, the purple.

Has anyone seen one?

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

I have seen pictures from some friends in South Florida that brought one back from Thailand. I want one!!!!! LOL

Anthing purple is 'Gold' to me ;)

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

This is one of them in my collection....Is it blue/lavender/mauve/purple to you? I sent it to Clare but she already killed it.

Why thank you for announcing that, Kukiat! LOL! Yes, I'm afraid it succumbed very quickly. That shall be the bane of my existence. Next time, I'll send it to Luc straight away to be grafted. To be fair, it was a little on the thin and wrinkled side when I started to root it ;-) It is a gorgeous color, Kukiat, and that is a lovely picture.

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

Clare, yes the cutting was too young and thin. This was really my fault. Anyway it's a kind of learning experience. Next time I will send you a more mature one.

Kukiat

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kukiat, it most certainly was not your fault. A more experienced grafter would have been able to save it. I prefer to think of it as it chose to move on to a better place:-) You are wonderful!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Clare.....
How could you do that? 8D

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I'd like to plead insane, please.

Believe me, I have no confidence in my ability to root things now, and I just send all precious cuttings to Luc to graft for me:-) I did manage to root one of the cuttings that Kukiat sent me. It's a beautiful seedling of his. The rest went to Luc:-) It's going to be like Christmas again when Luc sends them back to me grafted. I wonder when that will be...

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I can relate.
I hope the storm doesnt set him back timewise for all the grafting he does.
If I buy anything I buy rooted only now.
f its a once in a lifetime deal then ill send it to luc.
My grafting skills are as bad as my rooting skill lol!!
I can do seeds and make wonderful things happen with mature plants.
Cuttings forget the second 'O' when rooting for me :P

I have plumeria's and I cannot get them to bloom. I rooted quite a few in the spring and all are doing fine but they dont bloom. I have fertilized and also gave the one I have in the ground some Epson Salts. What am I doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Michael, I'm in the same boat as you. I guess we'll have to keep practicing our grafting skills on Celadines until we can get it right! I know you will get the hang of it with your determination, tenacity, and positive thinking, and I will too:-)

Sendone, plumerias are heavy feeders and require a regular feeding schedule and full sun and lots of water to bloom well. Epsom Salts are great, but only contain minerals which don't help with blooming. It is getting late in the season now, but starting next spring, fertilize with a Bloombooster or Bloombuilder Fertilizer -- which is made by MiracleGrow, Schultz, and some other companies -- once a week from Spring until Fall, and you should see blooms. If you can't fertilize weekly, then do it as often as you possibly can, and I'm sure you will see results. You can supplement the fertilizing program with Epsom Salts or Superthrive. The Epsom Salts should be used in addition to fertilizer and not in place of it.

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Sendone2me, you live close to me as I am in Casselberry. I have lots of plumies and they do well here. You need fertilizer with a high middle number---- something like 10-30-10 for example. The middle number is phosphorous and helps blooming. You can but, like Clare said, the Bloombooster fertilizers. Got to Lucas nursery and you can get big bags of it, or, even Home Depot has these. I like the granular form for the ones that are planted in the ground, and the water mixable ones for the potted ones.

Good luck!

Hey Brad,
I just bought some pelletized slow release bloom booster.
I am wondering why you prefer to use the mix on potted plants instead?
Is there a disadvantage to this?
I thought I could save myself a little time by putting the pellets into the pots.
Thereby allowing me to ignore them for a while till the pellets wore out.
Also can I use the mix as well after using pellets?
Kind of double dosing the phosphorus on occassion?
Im also curious if there is a damage that occurs from too much phosphorus
I know too much nitro burns the roots and give scraggly growth.
What about Phosphorus?
Thanks

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Michael,

I have 5 nice sized trees in the ground and they require too much liquid fertilzer---much more than the potted ones. It's easier to use the time-released granular instead as it is quite potent and won't vanish into our sandy soil as quickly.

On the potted ones you can use the granular too, but I get quicker results with the liquid on them. I sometimes use some granular as a VERY light sprinkle to the soil to supplement between liquid feedings. The potted planst have a compact root system and less soil, so the liquid is more effective with these, I think.

Wow, that's a great color, Roger! Is that from Thailand too? Does it have a name? Thanks for posting it.

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

Roger, you are so quick. I recognized this photo since it was posted in a Thai forum recently.

Clare, This purple is actually from Thailand. It is one of the best purple flowers but it has poor info. It is so expensive right now. One bud is about $25. The color in the photo is somewhat too bright. In Thailand, it is simply called Jack's Purple.

Kukiat,
Like I said I hope to have it am working on it now and yes its expensive but I beieve it is actually a purple when others look to be fake to me. You guys over there sure do seem to have something we don't have over here and someday my wife and I are going to come to your country with a friend of ours name Pin have you heard of here she lives in California? Her sister live in Thialand and that is where she is from.

Roger, some day, we will visit Thailand too. It seems like such a wonderful place.

Kukiat, Jack's Purple is a beauty. Thanks for the info.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Me thinks I need this. Oh so beautiful.

25 dollars there? Looks worth it if I had 25 dollars.

What do you mean grafting? Do all plumies have to be grafted?

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Thatsa beauty Roger! ;)

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Thatsa beauty Roger! ;)
BTW... Lady in Pink has an inflo!! WOOT!!! 8D

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

Roger and Clare, you both are welcome to Thailand and also please be my guest. There will be more and more beautiful plumerias coming from Thailand for sure.

I got a grafted Jack's Purple (having only one bud of the purple on the rootstock) early this year. That is why I said it costed me $25/bud. At that time it was still a bud with a tiny (@ 0.5 cm) leaf. I had no idea how the flower might be. It grows very slowly in my garden. I just took some photos of it recently. Below is the photo of the purple with almost a true color. As compared to the reference (my name--Kukiat-- in purple), the color of this flower is purple (to me) but with a lot of pink in it.

Id be a happy owner of that lil sweety on any day! ;)
Its gorgeous Kukiat!
Im sure the color changes somewhat too as the blossoms age.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kukiat, we would love to be your guest when we visit Thailand. What a joy that would be.

Did you have to graft the bud onto the rootstock yourself, or did you buy it that way? The good ones always grow slowly, don't they? That is a truly amazing bloom. It does have a lot of pink in it compared to your name in purple, but it is still an exquisite flower. I am really looking forward to what comes out of Thailand in future years. Maybe it will be you that creates and grows the perfect purple plumeria. I would like to see one this color:

Kukiat,
We will come and see you for sure when we make the trip. I was in the Air Force and now its hard for me to get on a plane for as long as it would take to get to your country. I would need a layover somewhere and that is the big question we are working on right now.

Roger

Plumieville, PA(Zone 6b)

oh Clare the princess flower i love that one! :)

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

Michael, yes the color becomes lighter with age.

Clare, it's already grafted onto the rootstock when I got it. I guessed that it grows slowly because of poor quality rootstock. In fact I should have said its color is pink with a hint of purple. In my opinion, blue is much more exciting. Siam Lavender is more purple and has some blue color in it.

Roger, I know exactly what you mean. Thirty hrs on the plane from FL to Thailand and 12 hrs time difference are no fun.

Kukiat

Roger, I have a hard time with planes too, but obviously, not for the same reason. I'm going to need to be heavily sedated or something to make the trip!

Me too, Miss.

Thirty hours on a plane to Thailand! Yikes! I may have to just admire your country from pictures, Kukiat:-) I agree that blue is very exciting. I love Siam Lavender.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Take a boat and enjoy it LOL!!
Isnt there a cruise line that goes to Thailand?

Bradenton, FL(Zone 9b)

Now Michael that is a good thought. Then again I would want to get there as fast as I could. But a Big Boat ride sounds like fun. Laurie would have to buy a load of books for that trip she usually goes through 4 books on a 7 day cruise. I will have to check on that.

Roger

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ah, a cruise sounds more like what I would enjoy. Bravo, Michael! Someday... Although, I can't hardly leave for even a day around here because I have no one to take care of all my animals and water my plants!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Fly me out I'll do it for ya ;)

Patumthani, Thailand(Zone 11)

Clare, it is not that bad if you fly from CA to Thailand.

Roger, there is one more option. You can select a route that the plane starts from the East coast and goes over north pole, Russia, China before reaching the final destination, Thailand. In this case you spend much less time on the plane.

Kukiat

Bradenton, FL(Zone 9b)

We are looking into going to LA then to Hawaii then to Gaum the to Thialand and taking a few days at each stop.

Roger

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Neat, Roger! Let me know when you will be in L.A., and I will try to drive in and see you if I can.
