saving morning glory seed

How do you save morning glory seeds? Is it like any other flower that produces seeds? I have been watching mine trying to figure out where the seed is?

When the flower fades there will be a little ball like thing that comes to a point that grows from where the center of the flower was.

It will grow larger and eventually turn from green to brown. When they start to turn brown, they are mature...I usually clip them off when they start to look shrivelled and light brown, but not crispy dry.

Lay them up on a plate in a single layer till they are crunchy and pop open. They usually have 4 black seeds inside.

Depending on the variety, the little 'pod' will be from the size of the end of a pencil eraser to the size of the end of your thumb (moonflowers..and those seeds will be creamy instead of black)

Are morning glories the ones where people were talking about tying the blossom shut to prevent cross pollination, so you can collect seed that will come true to type? That's only a concern if you have a bunch of different MGs and you want to save seeds from specific ones.

Thanks everyone.

Morning Glories will cross with each other...bees do it. I'd tape the blossoms the night before with masking tape...that's how we do it with squashes.

You mean you pick a few blossoms and tape them shut so that they never open?

With squash, you tape them shut on the plant...leave them on so that the anthers produce ripe pollen. If you pick them , the flower will die.

I just take a little strip of tape and put it across the top of the bloom that will open in the morning...those blooms will remain closed, but the pollen will be ripe...and pollen from a different flower will have no chance to get inside.

Carefully peel the tape off and pollinate the flower...tape back shut. The flower will fade naturally and hopefully you will have a ripe ovary with seeds growing inside that will look like the parent.
