Finally getting blooms!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

My tie dye vines are finally getting blooms that OPEN (not just fall off!). They're not open all the way, but I just couldn't wait anymore!

These are from the first seed I purchased on Ebay earlier this year.

Here's another from the same vine. Not as open as the first, but like I said . . . I couldn't wait to share!

Those are really pretty.. Love the last one too, the first year I grew the Cardinal Climber it really took off and made such a wonderful show (the hummers love it) and I haven't been able to get one going since then (3 years in a row).

Hi Nichole,
What a beauty you have growing.
Actually the correct 'common' name for your JMG is
'Purple Flaked'. Also, you will see a 'Blue Flaked'.
I'd give you the complete name that is
very loooooong, but am having computer problems
at the moment and I can't get to my notes.

When I bought the seeds, the seller said there would be 3 colors on each flower - that's true, if you count the pink color in the middle!

Emma - is it a JMG even though the leaves are the "normal" heart shape?

Gourd - Do you want me to start a Cardinal Climber, then ship it to you?

Nicholjean - The Ipomoea purpurea flaked strain is referenced here on Dr.Yosiaki Yoneda's website
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2521/htmls/13.html
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2521/htmls/14.html
Aomurasakizyouhantensibori, Bluish purple flaked
Ao is Japanese for a blue color and murasaki is for purple

MG cultivars that originate in Japan are usually of Ipomoea hederacea,Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea descent and all three of the aforementioned species naturally produce both heart shaped anf trilobed leaves...the cultivars that the Japanese have been breeding for, can exhibit very extreme features that are very unlike the look of these same species as they occur in their 'natural' forms...So,Japanese MG's can have leaves that are heart shaped, trilobed or all sorts of unusual 'otherwordly' shapes...scout around the site that I posted here and you will see many(!) other types...
Enjoy(!)...

Nicole, thank you for the offer that is so sweet, but, I have some more seeds that I will try in January again..

I don't know when to give up (one of my bad traits).

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I just hope I get some seed of off this one . . . I was looking last night, and couldn't find any - so this batch must have been my last ditch effort go get the seed to start.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Nichole,
Your should get plenty of seeds,
especially in your 8b TX Zone.
I thought San Antonio was a 9 Zone, which is even better for you.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I thought so too, but according to the zone map when I was setting up my acct here, it said 8b.

I do have another JMG vine that has one seed pod. It had two, but I took the one off too early - the seeds were still green. I'll see if I can attach a pic.

That is a beauty.
Looks like maybe 'Heian No Umi'
not positive about that because you bloom has more white in the throat than 'Heian No Umi'.
Maybe someone else can make a positive ID for you.

Nicholejean - The MG that you just posted has unvariegated heart shaped leaves, which I happen to like on Ipomoea nils...I'd be interested to trade you something for any seeds if you manage to get any extra to share...

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

RON_CONVOLVULACEAE - On this last pic (the purple one) - there are two different types of leaves showing. There is the heart shaped, and then (in the lower left) there is the tri-lobed. There are two different vines (I didn't plant them far enough apart, so they're starting to twist together!) - the heart shaped belongs to the Aomurasakizyouhantensibori (which you identified for me earlier). The purple-ish flower has the tri-lobed leaves. I'll post another pic of that one.

It looks to me like you must have most every variety (you have a vast amount of knowledge regarding JMG's!), while I'm just getting started. I would like to trade with you - I just don't want to mislead you in any way regarding which bloom belongs to which leaf!

Please let me know if you're still interested!

Nicole,
That is BEAUTIFUL!
Such a vibrant color.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok, quick question . . . The seed pod on my maybe 'Heian No Umi' had turned a light brown since yesterday. Is it ready to be picked? Or do I need to wait until the . . . what do you call them . . . leaves? . . . that are holding the pod turn brown too? (see how much I have to learn?)

Thanks for all your help, everyone!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Nichole,
You don't need to be in a major rush to collect your seeds. Just be sure they are TOTALLY dry before you do. I usually make sure the back side of the pod has no green left . When you collect your seeds, the thin shell will crumble if you apply the lest amount of pressure. I'm sure this could probably be explained better, but I believe you understand what I'm trying to say.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

That makes perfect sense! I think I've been checking that poor pod every day for a month! There is still a bit of "give" to it, so I'll TRY to be patient . . .

Thanks!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I plucked the pod! Instead of a few seeds, there was one giant mutant seed! Here's a pic. The small one next to the mutant is a Clarks Heavenly Blue seed - for comparison.

Gorgeous blooms. Yours look really healthy too!!! I am hoping to start a cardinal climber next year. They are so pretty!

Here is another one off the Aomurasakizyouhantensibori vines - this one has been rained on.

Nicholejean, I live in San Antonio too, and I've always been under the impression we were in zone 9a. The only place I ever see zone 8b is in flower catalogs where are trying to sell flowers that don't do well in zone 9a. At least I've never had good luck with them, because we are either too hot in the summer, or not cold enough in the winter. lol

Your mg's are very pretty. Have you been bother with little green flying insects at all? Last year and this year both, my morning glory vines stay covered in them and they suck the juices out of the foliage. Where do you live in SA?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I can't say I've seen any little green flying insects . . . but I did see some green/black spider bug I thought was interesting. Didn't have the camera with me, though.

I live between Kirby and Converse.
