Do mimosa trees need to have a pollenator?

We wanted more then the one 50+ year old one Jack's mom planted but none of the seeds seemed fertile. Then about 3 or 4 years ago we noticed some sprouts out in the blackberry rows where I had emptied some bags of leaves. Last year we had some sprouts for the first time and this year we have hundreds of sprouts. Did we just need a pollenator for our old one to get things going?

We've had a solitary mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) here for a couple of decades, and it does bear some fruit with viable seeds. But we have found only one volunteer seedling. Maybe your seeds just weren't falling in the right places. More likely, your location at the northern edge of the adaptive range of the species prohibited successful recruitment of seedlings until these past couple of relatively mild winters.

Thanks, Guy. I don't really know much about the trees except that his mother planted that one and it is still going strong. We have never noticed any fragrance or that humming birds or anything else is attracted to it like others speak of.
