Julie,

Thanks so much. I also am dirty and sweaty, but only from sitting around. It's too hot to do anything else. The money we are saving on not having power, we use in showers.

Luckily water is pumped by the city, so no electricity needed.

I do so wish there was a safe waterhole to jump into. All I have is the intracoastal, too much current and too dirty.

We took patio furniture out of a pool this morning, that was too dirty too. Wasnt my pool, but wish it was.

we are plugged into the neighbors house. They keep switching her on and off. Wish they'd fix us.

Was just an occasional lurker till now. We who aren't affected by the hurricanes are sure thinking of those who are. Hope you've got power soon.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yeah, it's a nasty storm and I feel it could result in lots of lives lost. I sure hope not.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Ann...I'm glad you took me up on the invitation to drop in. ;-) You're welcome anytime.

Molly...I have a nice bath tub and a computer you can use...and (((~hugs~))) to you and yours...and your neighbors, too. I'm just really happy to know you're ok. (Our cannas are growing like crazy! I think about you every time I walk past them...and that's pretty often. Stay safe...and clean (if possible ;-)

Hi Darius!

Man, ALL my attention is on Katrina... family and DG friends in the dangerous path.Sorry not to be posting fun stuff on this thread tonight.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi coffee clubbers!! Been a busy day, checked in early this morning and just now getting back to the puter.

M-5 you just crack me up, somebody's suggestion that you become a stand up comic was my idea first, just didn't get it down fast enough. Thanks for the breakfast the other morning, no I didn't get it, but wondered why DH was up before me, and why when I asked he didn't want breakfast that morning, now I know.

Yes, I have sometimes wondered if DH wasn't the rear of a horse in a previous life, and it's tendencies still show up from time to time.

Molly,so glad to hear that you are all right. Was very worried about you. Being without power is the pits, but honey it could have been so much worse.

Well after church this morning, came home and had grilled hamburgers for lunch. Then after cleaning the dishes, started preparations for supper, as I had invited neighbors over. DH and neighbor went fishing Friday and caught quite a few blue gill. So we had fried fish, hush puppies, slaw, baked beans, and a pasta salad as female neighbor doesn't eat slaw. Then for dessert, BLACKBERRY COBBLER with whipped cream. Yum, it was really good, and made by my own 10 fingers!!
DH helped clean the kitchen after they had gone home, he does that occasionally, but took me by surprise tonight.

It rained some late this afternoon, so as I always say, "not enough, but better than nothing."

Who doesn't have tomatoes? Mine are almost gone, they just keep getting smaller and smaller, not many green ones left either. Do have some late yellow tomatoes that have green ones but none have ripened yet.

Talked to twin sister tonight, her oldest GD is in the hospital undergoing tests. Had an CT scan on Friday, but don't have the results yet. Although Dr. has told them there is abnormal frontal brain activity, maybe seizures, or even suggested early onset Alzheimers. This girl is only 17. So keep her in your prayers, as I cannot think of anything more horrible to see a child waste away from this hideous disease. Her name is Lindsey Wilson.

Well, going to settle down with a good book as DH is in control of TV remote, and you guessed it, has been flipping between sports all night. Or just pray that I don't implant that remote in some nether regions of his anatomy!! LOL

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Bonnie, so sad to hear that about your neice. Will pray it's something passing and not debilitating.

Don't remember if I actually wrote it or just imagined writing it (today has been tough) but I could laugh at imagining Robert getting a pedicure!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Hello to ViolaAnn....hope to meet u in person some day!

Yummy on the blackberry cobbler - love those berries. I picked enough raspberries this afternoon to share - join in friends! If there's enough left by morning, I'll take some to work to share.

darius - I hear u, loud and clear - pretty much what I'm consumed by right now. Terrified for those folks. I could never live down there - since I almost drowned once (DB that was here Thurs. night fished me out) .... I have a terrible fear of drowning. Hope everyone makes it - I am praying for safety for all.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Dcat, that sounds scary for someone so young. My second youngest gs was just at Children's Hosp for two weeks due to some viral infection that was causing him to be nauseated, and blood vessels breaking on the surface of his skin. He's home now and doing well. Youth is on their side. Let's hope you hear good news soon,

Ya think anybody wants to see a pearshaped senior citizen cracking wise for money? They might pay me to go away!!

Bought one item at the craft/art fair. I had purchased from this creative person before, so now I have a pair of "angels" except the new one looks like trouble. I named the first one Elise, and she often goes to lunch with me because if she is housebound too long, she gets cranky. Like me. I haven't named the new one yet, but I'm thinking Lola, because she looks like she could get what ever she wants....Can you imagine the time it takes to sew these little creatures? The artist does it all, stitch by stitch, paints the faces, makes the jewelry, designs the hair do, etc. She has a website, Young at Heart.com, showing her vast variety of "dolls" and they are all just as intricate.

Tomatoes! Ha! Have picked two of my own, the size of golf balls, and a few yellow mini pears, but it's not looking good. I'm getting donations so we aren't deprived but there won't be any to roast with garlic and olive oil, or to make puree. Pitiful. Chard must like crappy weather, picked a big grocery bagful today, so I have to blanch it and freeze it tomorrow. Not tonight, I'm already yawning and it's only a little past 9. Think I'll grab a book and go to bed.

Nite all

Sheila

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Come to my house - we have tomatoes coming out our ears!! And I hate to see them go to waste!

Welcome Vi - join the gab fest and tell us all about yourself! We listen to complaints as well!

DS and DIL stopped over yesterday to get some tomaotes for salsa and invited us to dinner- can't pass an inite up! Had a fish fry, stuffed tomatoes, and new potaotes - made for a yummy din din. Later we watched the movie 'supersize' - man, if you haven't seen it - get it. It is about fast food - I don't think I will ever eat another meal there (ok maybe at Wendy's"

While cleaning my laundry room, I found some copper cleaner (did I already tell ya this??) Cleaned the bottoms of 6 pans - what a job. My nails are a mess and I used a whole roll of paper towel - but man - do the pans looks spankin new! Laundry room is still not cleaned as I got side tracked!!

Neighbor came over and told us to come over and pick their plum tree - got a bag full, but now am wondering what in the world I was thinking? How many can I eat in a day? Neighbor said she had 7 and spend the next day close to the 'jon' - no thank you!

Got up at 4:30am to see the news about Katrina - man, that is one scarey storm. At least it is back down to a cat 4 now. Can you imagine holding up in the superdome? They said the power would go off there - hot, dark, and frightening I would bet.

Defo - yikes- checking for alz at such a young age? Now that is really scarey. Fingers/toes crossed for her - plus some added prayers for a good diagnosis.

As I age, I worry about what will happen to me. I think it is a given that DH will go before me - he never goes to the doc, has high blood pressure and eats fats/meats/butter etc at every meal - plus does not exercise at all. I think - who will take care of me??? And since I only have sons - it isn't like I have any daughter to depend on. In our family, it is me that does everything for my folks - brother is in his own little world, boating and spending $$. He calls them, maybe, once a month - if that. My sister is outta state, in bad health herself, and a total ditz (but a millionaire) - she is totally undependable. Gosh, what a way to start out the week - worrying about me!! sorry

Just heard on the news that coffee is now good for ya - on that not, I'm gonna brew me a big pot and enjoy a megga mug of java. Off to my first day back at the fat factory (contours)

Thinking bout the folks in Katrina's path...

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Sarv,

Many women have only boy children, so when push comes to shove, there will be just one of your boys who will make sure that you are taken care of.

My friend from the old neighborhood has 3 sons, all grown and one of them dotes on her. He's always coming to visit, flying her to New Orleans, or when she had surgery and he couldn't stay, he bought a ticket for his xwife to come stay with his mom.

Boy children can do just as well at taking care of their moms as girl children do.

I have only one child, a grown boy and if he fails to take care of me in my old age, I am calling on my sisters' girlchild. chuckle chuckle, don't know what my sis would say about that.

Molly

P.S. Power is on, and we are back to normal here, sending prayers north to our friends in the path of that nasty storm.

good morning everyone -

i've been lurking over on the weather/katrina thread and watching the weather channel all weekend. didn't do anything in the yard at all - laid out some old cobblestones to mark my kitchen garden paths. that's it. it turned humid and skeeter-y saturday, and i was just too distracted by the gulf of mexico. i still am.

weather fascinates me. it's about the only thing left we humans can't control. when katrina became a cat 5, the awe-factor took over and i couldn't move from my kitchen perch in front of the tv & laptop. what i find most interesting is how hurricanes always pull a last-minute surprise ... those unexpected jogs in direction or intensity that all our fancy technology can't predict.

i hope the foolish folks who ignored evac orders come thru ok. what's the old saying .. God looks out for children and fools?

have a nice monday, y'all ...
dig

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Back for just second - I'm on a cleaning jag. I'll brag about what I've done so far: Finished gutting laundry room - painted the floor - can't finish putting everything back it till it dries. Then decided to tackle the 'junk closet' Am emptying it and reorganizing it. I should really gut it and paint the walls and get new shelving units, but don't think that will get done. I've had the TV on all day watching the news on the hurricane - I find it so fascinating.

Molly - I hope one of the boys will take care of me. But I just can't see them taking their old ma to the doc and helping take off my bra (that's what I did for my mom!!) or giving me a bath - heaven forbid!! Oh well, won't worry about that now - I buy worry - can ya tell??

I never ended up going to the work out joint - my workout partner called and asked if I 'really' wanted to go - of course I didn't!! We will go on Thurs - putting off the bad news I guess. Tomorrow we're all meeting for our first day of school coffee.

Well, back to the closet - I wish DH would do the closet- he is a much better organizer than I am - I just shuffle things around...

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, just in for a bit. We had rain last night, have been weeding, cut my tunias back & fertilized, cut and pulled some vines that were threatening to take over clematis. It is overcast, but very humid. They say tonight and tomorrow we will be getting the remains of Katrina. Heavy rains and wind. Need the rain, as we are really far behind for the year.

Yeah, I only have a grown son, and wonder who will take care of DH and me in our old age. Do have 1 DGD who is 9 and she told me recently that she and her boy friend would move in with us and take care of us. I told her that I don't do boy friends (no live ins), and she and a HUSBAND would be welcome!! She has no example, as her mother lives with someone, a half sister, lives with someone and has a baby. What's with the younger generation being not able to make a committment to marriage? Recently DGD asked me if I could answer some questions for her. I told her that I would always tell her the truth, and if I didn't know I would say so, and together we would find the answer. Well about a month later while visiting, she asked me to come into her bedroom to talk. She said remember you said you would always tell me the truth, I say yes and I will. She says well I have a question, "Is sex fun?" Well you should have seen me dancing around and with that!! And remember this child is only 9 years old. At that age I would have been mortified to ask that question of anyone. How do these kids know so much?

Well I am going back outside to tackle some other jobs. Still haven't got my load of dirt, but will before the snow flies!!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Bonnie,

I will ask you at the KY RU the answer to that question.
:^))))
Molly

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Good Grief....at 9 years old I did not know sex existed.....really...I knew that there were boys and girls, but I did not know how you told them apart. My mother told me the doctor knew at birth and told the mother......so my life went for 19 years and I got married....who, me sheltered....????? nah...........

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I just got a call from one of my customers, time to paint some more offices.........in Baltimore.

We'll be flying up on Thursday, coming back on Saturday.

I knew this was coming, but frankly, didn't think it was cost feasible to fly 2 painters out of town. But I guess he thinks it is.

Now, to get a hold of my housekeeper to animal sit for me. 2 dogs, 3 parrots. Kim is such a good girl.

Anyone going to be in Baltimore this week?

Molly
:^)))

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Molly, that tells me that your prices are toooooo reasonable. Think about it. Why else you they do it?

Does the dog's nanny stay at the house with them?

Hap

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh but Happy, I charge travel time too. They pay all lodging and food while we are gone. I suppose it's easier hiring me, a known entity, than trying to find someone in a strange city.

Kim will take the doggies to her house and just stop by to feed and check on the birds.

When we go to Kentucky at the end of September, we take the dogs and Kim will take the birds to her house.

I am so lucky to have her.

Molly

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Took stock of what groceries we have in the house. It didn't take long to figure that out. Both freezers are empty, no leftovers in the fridges and we ate all the eggs today that this old body can handle.

Called "Two Guys" pizza. Closed for the next 3 weeks. No power right now anyway.

Plan C for dinner, any one have a plan C? No, please I don't wanna go to the market.

Think fast, another take out place.........

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Touching base here although hanging out all day on the Katrina threads.

The tornado watches on the east side of Atlanta come all the way up to the state line 15 miles south of me, and we are expecting to lose power. Hopefully not for more than a day or two although it was 5 days after Ivan last year. Our ground is so saturated from a month of rains that any wind will bring down a lot of trees easily.

I'm charging my cell phone although I have to drive several miles to get a signal.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Darius, I think that we are going to have to put you double on the prayer lists.....

Hap

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well gang, it's been a full day. Worked outside pulling weeds, cutting back petunias, etc. In to do some laundry and cooking, and then back to do some more weeding. Rain coming in tonight, so thought I should get all outside activities caught up.

Molly, I don't even have a plan B for a meal!! Got any cheese and bread. Make grilled cheese.

Yes, we will talk at RU about my answer to DGD. She is a hoot!!

Darius, I wish you well during this stormy weather. Hope you stay dry and safe.

Happy, I'm like you, almost married by the time I had figured it out. Mother wasn't much on birds and bees talk. She did not even tell me about monthlies, so was thoroughly mystified when that happened.

Molly, I saw on another thread that you wanted ornamental cabbage & kale seed, I will check and let you know. I think I have some.

Congrats on the painting job. You must be really good and reasonably priced to get out of state work. Good you have a reliable petsitter. Must have someone I trust to look after mine.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Molly, I am putting ornamental cabbage and kale seeds in the mail to you in the morning. Had a few, so good luck with starting them.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Bonnie,

Thanks so much for sending the seeds!!!!!

I am really looking forward to growing them.

Molly

Holy Smokes Molly - flying you up to paint - now that is a first - you must really be GOOD!! I painted my laundry room floor today -but I hate painting....almost as much as I hate wallpapering.

Defo- she asked you WHAT??? My mouth is still hanging open ---you need to tell us all what you told her!! I gotta think what I would say to that one! My mom never said a word about anything to us girls. When I got married she walked me out to the car after the reception and said "now honey, you know what is gonna happen" - I was mortified...

When my oldest DS had a son before they were married - I was devestated and so embarassed. He's the one that just got married to the mom - 8 yrs later!! But it is common place among my friends now - first live together, then with another, then a child, and maybe someday get married. Strange world - I feel like I am a prude.

Got my laundry room and junk closet both all cleaned up and man do I feel like a million bucks!! Looks pretty nice if I do say so myself!! I keep opening the doors and looking at them and smiling.

Tomorrow I was supposed to meet my friends for coffee, but DIL just called and asked if I could take DGS to the doctor at 11am. Drat- DS just got put on mandatory 55 hrs and she (DIL) can't get off either. Soooo, grandma to the rescue...again However he came home from day care today throwing up, so maybe he will be too sick to go to the doc! Anyhow, he comes first, so I will miss my coffee I think.

Darius - hang in there!! At least it is summer and you won't freeze - just probably roast in the heat. It seems like you've had more than your share lately.

DH just brought me a butter pecan sundae - he's in a grumpy mood again - said the weather was too hot!! I better go and chow it down before it melts. Night everyone!!

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Hello all!

Well - Katrina's dumping on us now. We've had rain and high winds since about 5 - and still coming down. Lord knows we need the rain - but could do without the high winds.

Friends of mine from LaPlace LA came up last night and stayed with other friends here in the area. They expect to go back home tomorrow - depending on how the waters recede. Unfortunately they need to get back as soon as possible because of looters. Some people.

Molly - so glad to know you're safe and sound and enjoy your trip to Baltimore.

Darius - please keep in touch if you can. We'll be thinking of you.

Well - not much else to say - just checking in!

Marcia

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sarv, I had made that promise to tell her the truth, so I was on the spot. First of all explained that when you fall in love with someone, and AFTER you are married (notice that emphasis?) that having sex was the ultimate way to express your love. Did a side bar on being a difference to "having sex" and "making love". I explained that peer pressure had a lot to do with having sex. Told her some people treat it as recreation, but is a sacred act between two married people. Explained how GOD intended it for pro creation, etc. Well, went through all that, and the next question is "so is it fun?" Well, had beat that dog all around the bush and still had to answer that question. I then explained that to some people it was a pleasurable experience and some others saw it as a duty as a wife or husband, etc. Tried to explain that it was just as much an emotional experience as it was a physical experience. But then she said "is it fun?" So had to answer that for the most part it was!! She then told me that I could have answered with a yes or a no, that's all she wanted to know!! So the moral of this experience is- I will heretofore just give the short answer and see if there are any follow up questions. Although, I try to be a moral compass for her as she doesn't have any role model to follow. This kid is a hoot, it is like talking to a 21 year old!! Very mature, and a good thinker and decision maker. Don't get me wrong, she is a kid and has fun like any other, not serious all the time.

Well, we are expecting, during the night to be visited by the remnants of Katrina. Will post again in the a.m., to let you know what she is doing to us.

Molly, enjoy the seeds. I tried them, and didn't have much luck, so here's hoping you do better.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

defo = good answer - I will have to run a copy of it and keep it handy!!

It is 3;30 am and there is no sleep in me, so I got my body outta bed. Cat is sitting on my lap purring and looking at me with the most loving eyes. She's a real sweetie - although I did catch her minutes ago raking her claws down the chair....grr

Oh, I forgot to tell ya that along with my junk closet and laundry room cleaning, I rearranged the living room furniture!! No wonder my arm is killing me!!

I need to do my tomatoes tomorrow or else I might as well forget about them - they have been ready for a week and I imagine many of rotted. DH was supposed to pick them for me, but he didn't - we are ready for another blow up I think....

On that pleasant thought, I will bamboose to check out other forums!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh golly, it's like that old joke where the kid asks his mom "Where did I come from" and mom does the whole birds and bees thing, at the end of which the kid says, "Oh. Johnny came from Springfield, and I didn't know where we came from".

Maybe I'm less inclined to long answers, but I might have asked her first why she wanted to know....and then said, "Do you think people would keep on doing it if it was awful?" But that's just me. I think after the first 20 words of an answer little brains start going "lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala" and you are wasting your breath.

Sarv. you can come for a visit and clean my house!! I was looking around yesterday and thinking I really need to do some non-surface cleaning, i.e. dusting more than horizontal surfaces, book shelves, refrigerator shelves, corners, move the frig & freezer and find what the cats have slung under them, clean the kitchen cabinets, etc.

I got a flyer on the mailbox a couple weeks ago from "Katie" who says she offer "temporary" or "regular" cleaning services, and I'm really tempted. I generally keep things picked up so it looks neat (except for the chronological heap of bills, recipes, photos, coupons etc. on my regular desk) but I'm sure there are socks behind the dryer, and crumbs under the sofa cushions.

Looked at a house my son and DIL are considering....it's almost as small as their current one, but has a basement and a garage. Of course, they need financial assistance or we wouldn't be seeing it. I think they are too impatient, and if they think they can afford paying twice what they pay now, they should try banking the extra money for a year and then look for something else. IMHO. I'm sure they want a loan more than they want my opinion....like that will happen.

Katrina has done some terrible damage, Molly is on her way to Baltimore and said except for the power outage they were O.K. Others are not so fortunate, New Orleans is a mess.

Got plum tomatos from DGS and a friend, so I did roast them with garlic and olive oil, ended up with about a cup and a half when done.
Still have the yellow ones and a few big boys from them, but we eat those little ones like candy. Noticed my Early Girl has a couple of nice clusters of big ones, which may get ripe if the weather stays warm.

I'd better get myself in gear, need to start watering again,no rain in the forecast.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

We have been getting heavy rains and tornados from Katrina since last evening. My weather alert radio went off several times between 10 pm and 3 am. The tourist Alpine town of Helen not too far south of me as the crow flies was hit. We are under a tornado watch until tonight. Except for tornado damage and associated deaths, we should get off lucky. So far, we still have power and the creek still has plenty of room to rise.

Watching all the news about the gulf coast devastation makes me physically ill.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Darius - so glad to hear you're okay so far. I thought of you all night. We had no power from midnight to 5 am. Lots of rain and wind. We suffered no damage personally, but the neighbors fence blew down, and there are lots of trees down around us. Still windy and raining some - but not like last night. We saw on TV this morning all the damage and all - it truly is sickening and sad. You take care and keep us posted.

Stay safe...all my friends in the storm track. I'm thinking about and praying for each of you.

~julie~

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well have done several "inside" jobs today, as Katrina is finally here. It is raining and wind blowing, but so far not too bad.

I am antsy today, cause I can't go out to play in the garden. So I have cleaned bathrooms, dusted straightened a cabinet, washed 2 loads of laundry, put 2 packages of seed in mail, cleaned out freezer on refrigerator, and paced alot!! Am starting to organize photo albums. Putting them in catagories, like vacation pics, animal pics, my family, DH family, DGD pics, etc. Maybe after I finish that, Iwill know where to look for a certain picture.

I am going to a jewelry party tonight. Don't want or need anything, but this is a "debt" that I owe. Hostess is a neighbor, and demonstrator is a dear cousin. I am keeping in the back of my mind, Christmas gifts.

Darius, holy cow, tornados, we have not had anything like that, but weather people say it is a possibility later on.

Molly did you get everything all straightened up after Katrinas visit?

Meezer, you would have to know DGD, as she wants all the details. She is especially interested in knowing geneology. When meeting cousins etc for the first time, she always wants to know "how they are kin to me" She has even asked me to take her to the local cemetery so that she can look for graves of people named Rucker, her maternal grandparents. Whatever she does, it is done to the nth degree.

Sarv, where did your energy come from? Way to go on the cleaning. I try to chip away at mine day by day, but like you, don't do the in depth thing but about 2x a year. This winter, I am going to change the colors in my kitchen. Have already started looking a wallpaper borders, and paint colors. I like to change things about every 2-3 years.

Molly did you find something to eat last night? I hate that what to fix for dinner thing. I have 3 freezers full of food, and still have trouble putting together a meal!!

Betsy Bug, are you still getting rained on? How much rain did you get? So far this morning we have had about 4 inches. Haven't had that much all summer, but will catch up in a hurry with this.

Well, I'm off to delve into pictures. I always end up taking "walks down memory lane" when I start looking at pictures. Probably the only exercise I will get today.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

defoe - I get spurts of energy - most of the time I wander the garden, pulling a few weeds and then get on the computer. Yesterday was a real fluke and it will not repeat itself soon I am sure.

Took DGS to the doc today - cute young guy doc. I kept explaining to everyone that I was NOT the mom -just the grandma! Doc told me it was time for the 'sex' talk too - I was dumbfounded. They give you a nice print out of things 8 yr old should be doing etc and that was on it. I just talked to his mom and told her and she was very surprised and said 'tell him everything?" LOL DGS has tons of headaches and doc says it is 'stress' - DIL is a real stressed gal and I think it has probably passed on to him - poor kid.

It is cloudy and cool here today - even had to close the windows - but it feels good for a change. My cleaning frenzy has slipped away . DGS and I are gonna tackle his toy room - it is a disaster and he wants to do it - wonder of all wonders!!

My mom just told me she is ready to hire someone to clean her house. I hope she doesn't ask me - I just don't want to do it. Cleaning my own house and my stroke cousins dive is enough. She is a clean freak and I am sure I wouldn't do it to her satisfaction -even tho her eyesight is failing!

Missed the noon news about Katrina and her wrath - I did hear that something gave way and there was water coming into town. Poor people - I feel so for them. Time to clean..

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Overcast with a hint of rain in the air. Just right for the past 3 hours of weeding. Plan on pulling everything out of the 12X12 raised bed this time. Took out the 3 big clumps of hollyhocks ( they have roots like huge parsnips), and cut all the seed capsules from the poppy bed. They were all labeled trying to keep them straight was to difficult. Next year-- Mixed Poppies. All the gallon brugmansias (about 23) are repotted in nice big pots. Too bad I don't have a place to put them. (along with the other 50). When I get bored with weeding in the back there is always the front landscape that is fast becoming an unsightly wilderness of overly mature plants. Tried carving in the sunroom. The light was great, but the glass top table left a lot to be desired. I can just picture giving a gouge a good rap with a mallet and having the tabletop disintegrate. Not a bad idea! I never liked that table anyway.

Meezer, The Rucker family was prominent in the founding of Everett, Rucker Hill, with some of the 'posher' homes and Rucker Ave. Don't know if they are your kin, but they were 'from the east'.

Now that the Ceonothus is trimmed I can look out my window and enjoy the second flush of bloom on Sally Holmes and Ballerina. Finished my ham& cheese sandwich, big dill pickle and glass of milk, so maybe I better get back out and get to work. Best wishes for all those under the influence of Katrina.

Hi All,

I haven't left for Baltimore yet, will leave on Thursday and come back Saturday. I just got an email from the boss and he noted they have 2 office in Baltimore, so if we have the time, we will do some painting at the second office as well. My suitcase (uh oh, I don't have a suitcase) will have to carry 2 roller pans, 2 rollers and sleeves, 3 paint brushes and a couple other sundry items. All the rest of the stuff, I will buy from Home Depot cheap and throw them away, plastic dropcovers etc. This is the first time I am traveling by plane for a painting job. He tells me there will be more. Another new office being set up in Vegas, now that I shall really look forward to, never been there as a grown up.

My clothes and personal doodads go into a satchell whenever I travel. I do have a couple of those.

Bonnie, yep, the debris in my yard is cleaned up and we did our neighbor ladies yard too. The biggest cleanup around the house was getting all the cooking stuff off the patio. We did our cooking on the grill which has a side burner. I heat water in the kettle and pour it into the filter basket of the Mr Coffee.

Two Guys Pizza was closed for the hurricane, no power, but Dough Boys was open so they were happy to bring food for a fee. Large portions so I shall eat the same thing again tonight.

We went to work today and will finish that job tomorrow just in time for the trip. I needed these jobs since we haven't had any work since the second week in August.

As hurricane season draws to a close, work for exterior painting will pick up. No one wants to paint outside right now just to have a hurricane come and blow it off.

DS complained of a sore back today. I am a tough taskmaster, but tried to maintain some empathy for him. He hasn't been one to malinger so when we got home I gave him some Ibruproph. and a heating pad.

I did find my blessings and have counted them, they are many for which I am grateful.

Oops, I thought you said "She then told me that I could have answered with a yes or a no, that's all she wanted to know!!" I guess I misunderstood.

Robert, I think the Ruckers are related to Dcat's GD. We don't have any historically noted relatives unless they got caught bootlegging during Prohibition. Which is entirely possible....GF had two taverns in Hurley, WI during that period, and nobody went away thirsty.

Need to go and move some more plants out of the poison tree beds, before they completely croak. Did the dragon's blood sedum this morning but then went for lunch with my golf partner to check out the restaurant we plan to use for the fall luncheon. I'll recommend staying away from their overcooked pasta. Did a little shopping, and DIL is coming over to have DH finish up her car repairs. She failed her emissions test by less than 1% on one of the several things they measure. SE Wisconsin is very strict on emissions.

Glad to hear you found food, Molly! We get so used to having power at our fingertips, it's hard to adjust to heating water etc. the old fashioned way. Have a safe trip, and be sure to have some crab cakes in Baltimore. I lived there briefly in '42 when my dad was in the service, but remember nothing about the city at all. Then we moved to army quarters in Arlington, which dad called dogpatch, concrete block houses, 6 or 8 attached like barracks. Learned to sing "I'm a little teapot" and thought if I jumped high enough I could fly. I can still sing "I'm a little teapot" but never did get the flying thing figured out.

DIL is here, so I must be sociable. See ya later

Mostly been watching the weather threads, worrying about DGers down south. Hi to all, sure could use some coffee. Gonna pick the raspberries tonight and leave them on the counter for you all. Whatever's left goes to work with me in the a.m. so get them now. :)

Definitely down today, just sick about all those people affected by Katrina, especially the families who have lost loved ones. Saw a man crying to a reporter, his wife was torn out of his arms and he can't find her. Tears a person up inside to see all that tragedy. Saying prayers for them all.
