Bullfrog Population Explosion

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

This has been very interesting reading as I am contemplating a waterfall/pond whatever.

My question is,,, you all talk about ponds...not waterfalls... Will frogs, toads, BF still want to be in running water? I live on a lake and I have an abundance of all three....UGH..

I am not sure about the BF, but toads at my house don't stay in the water much, only when mating. This is a link to a section of Robyn's site "FishPondInfo.com", in which she talks about frogs, etc. Down on the page is "bullfrogs", click on it and read what she has to say.

Happy-1, I have a waterfall and plenty of water movement and it doesn't bother the bullfrogs at all.
To those above, I have had ponds and bullfrogs for several years now and have never lost a fish to a bf, Got plenty of bf's in the ponds and there is fish all around them, But the frogs don't bother them, However, I have seen them get birds and such that came around the pond, But not any fish.

OH, Jackie,

How beautiful. Glad you got'em all growed up. I bet you did bother with all that nonsense of cupboard door locks, etc....LOL With nature alone, you had a powerful job.....and it looks as though you dun good. I know some mothers that would never live there...and it would be their loss.

Hap

Thanks for the pics.

If you guys have extra tadpoles, send them down here. My turtles need their protein.

Not funny,,,,,not funny......

This year there were hardly any Bullfrogs in the pond. A couple of big ones in the Spring, the biggest one I named Boss Hog, then later on hardly any. There were lots of Leopard frogs though. I guess they go through cycles.

Maybe we just grow 'em hungry here in AZ :-)

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I just spotted this thread - I like having my frogs - they eat my slugs. But if they were eating birds and basically eating everything else around them (What? not enough bugs around a pond?), they'd have to go the way of banana slugs and snails (when frogs don't eat them).

Though, I wonder if my cat would keep bullfrogs in check. I've caught her hunting "my" frogs.

How do you prepare legs?
:-)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

My cat is a boy, it seems boys are not good hunters (lazy) but your gril cat likely would be good at it, although you may not be thrilled with the result- I'm thinking a "what a mess!" that would be when she was done :-(

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey Azreno iam a good Hunter you should see me Hunting for the best TBone Steaks in the Meat Case LOL

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Gee Paul, I knew you were weird, but I had no idea you were a cat!?! LOL Happy hunting :-)

Never had BF problems but I think I'd rather fight those than these! *see photo below

The CTF eats ANYTHING in it's path...even it's own!
They're not native here in Florida and unfortunately, are wreaking havoc on not only our native frog population, but also lizards, which is a whole 'nuther story.
What we basically have left are 'anoles'...and these have all but eradicted our native lizards.

'Man' sure can screw up the earth, huh? LOL

yep

Moscow, TN(Zone 7a)

Sunny-That is great picture if you are not an oranda. lol

Leslie-I read they were as far north as Ga. Between the CTF and the pythons in the Glades ya'll have some real problems down there with non-native species. People sometimes do not think about the problems they will cause when releasing the pets they don't want anymore.

I have a 100 foot pond. I have seen a bullfrog grab a sandpiper & pull it under! It managed to get loose. I also had some plastic baby ducks & they ignored them until one day I was trying to move one by hitting it with the jet spray of a hose & the BF pounced on it & got it by the neck! I bet he had a sore jaw for awhile. (also had an eagle try to take away a ceramic duck) My Koi are two ft long & the BF havent got them but for sure they will eat baby ducks. We also have turtles. There doesnt seem to be a problem here. We buy 100 feeder goldfish each spring and every body seems to get along fine. They dine on the little fish & leave each other alone.
