Ok, you guys here we go. Hope this doesn't fizzle out too soon. I didn't get that message so I don't know what you are talking about.
rj, Kell, I was looking at that tree about Barbadose? That sure is pretty. There is another tree I don't know if it grows in Northern Ca, but it does in San Diego area, I saw years ago and it was gorgeous too. It was early spring, a big tree with a gray finish to it that didn't look like bark, not a leaf on it, and big orange and red flowers on it.
They may even grow in Texas. Do you know what I am talking about rj?
Sherry, I couldn't read that sign very good either but I thought it said "Open House". Or something that made me think the house next door was for sale. rj?
Jeanette
Monika's Book Regarding Soil (PART 2)
What message?
I do not know of that tree Jeanette, but I want one. LOL. Sounds incredible. Who needs leaves anyway? We need to find out the name.
Kell, Sherry and 2 Pug said they were getting messages that the thread had been closed before I did anything.
Thanks for the instructions. I had done this before I got it so I don't know who put the link on it, but if it was you thanks.
That was a huge tree. The one in San Diego, but beautiful. If I had a picture of it I would post it. Whoops, I think that is what the others said takes so long for the dial-ups., LOL
Jeanette
Well, if we all follow along and make it to this thread, changing threads next time will not be so difficult. We cannot survive without photos, lol. When I go too long without a photo, I hyperventilate and sometimes break out in a rash. Thanks for helping us move Kell, and thanks Jnette for starting the first thread and now Part 2!!!!
Hi guys-
That is a for sale sign. Since I was "seed snatchin" you probably know that isn't my house. It is along the way when I take my dog for a walk, or rather when he takes his human for a walk! (picture of Hudson) http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1548668 ) It is about a block a way from my house. I snatched another seed pod while I was taking pictures. Kell? seeds? think how little space that wispy tree takes up. You can keep it nice an trimmed and small.
I'm trying to think of the tree your talking about Jeanette. We can grow a lot of central american, mexico, barbados, african and other tropical trees. I think they're getting very popular as I'm seeing alot around lately and the nurseries are stocking them. Lets see...you can go to plantfiles and see if any of these match.
Firemans cap - mimosa tree several different varities. There is orchid tree and tulip tree. . Kell, you would like the orchid tree. I took a wrong turn going to the pet store this spring and saw this GIANT tree that appeared to be full of pinkish red orchids...It had thousands of seed pods. I remember where that house is and am going to ask them if I can snatch seeds. ..course I had to have one,.so I bought 2 in case one croaks. I have a firemans cap tree too, actually several. My friend has one and gave me seeds, and I unexpectedly was pretty sucessful with them.
whew...I'm going to plantfiles to look at the trees!
rj
Jeanette - go back to the original thread. Right click in the windows address bar. It will all be highlighted in blue and a pop up menu will appear. Left click on copy then come back to this thread and edit your original post. Pressing 'ctrl-V' or right click then clicking on paste will copy the address for the original link.
rj - the tree/flowers in the last thread were very cool. Hanging way too close to the sidewalk and could put someone's eye out, so a community service pruning was very appropriate and applauded. :)
Today's the 25th and I don't know why they haven't taken the sign yet. Probably this weekend.

Wow Blaine ..is that your house...very nice!
Yes..I went forth and was snatchin seeds in the alleys...wow..it was a bonanza.- I'm taking my camera tomorrow...don't know why I didn't think to take a photo of it today, but I came accross an interesting shrub or vine -- it look like a vine, but it had a round ball of flowers on it..the flowers were small but they all made this round ball..I'll post it tomorrow.
Rj
Blaine, they haven't taken the sign because they cannot find a yard that compares!!
You guys lost me. Blaine, why do you want me to do that? What is wrong with what we've got? You do it. What are you looking for?
Sherry, there is nothing wrong with photos. I enjoy them too.
rj, you aren't seed snatching if you ask for the seeds. LOL rj, how can you be snatchin' seeds in the alley behind Blaine's house? He is in Il. rj, that is Il. Illinois. Look at all of those L's rj. LOL
Jeanette
That is quite a few of those for you isn't it Blaine? Congratulations. Good job. Looks nice. I still would like to be your neighbor. Then I could do some midnight shopping.

rj, those are all beautiful trees but not the one I was alking about. My sister saw the same one last year. I will ask her if she remembers.
Jeanette
Jnette, do photos not slow down your dial up? I haven't had dial up since I've been on DG, but several years ago, when digitals hit and dial up couldn't keep up, it was a pain waiting for photos to download. I doubt I would have stayed with the internet if I didn't have wireless, which is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I can read my email and watch the kids in the cement pond - I love it!!!
Oh Jeanette...for that orchid tree - I had seed snatchin in mind, I'm being polite!
No, I wasn't seed snatching in the alley behind Blaines house.!! I told him I snatched seeds from the Pride of Barbados - I pointed out that the branch indeed did transgress the public walkway in the photo, and Blaine was simply congradulating me for providing "community pruning" services" :)
I've been drooling over some of these tropicals at
http://www.alohatropicals.com/store.cgi?&cart_id=7311362_27370
I've been wanting a tree fern every since I went to Costa Rica- Not an Australian fern, or New Zealand fern and not any of the other dozen plants with the same name.....Schizolobium Parahybum "Fern Tree" Bacurubu
- and found it, ordered it, gonna have it - I'll make the space! It's on the flowering plants and trees. I couldn't link right to the page. Better check watchdog

Rj, on one of the links, I think you provided, there was a mimosa tree. I had a Golden named Mimosa, she was special!! Thing is, mimosa trees are messy and sticky here and invasive and grow wild, there is no such thing as one mimosa tree and they are not attractive in the winter. The flowers are beautiful. Do they die back in Houston and are they sticky there???
Oh Blaine, you may win again!! Your yard is still looking at its peak. That would be too cool! Are there any other yards around town you think are as good? I bet yours is pretty unique for your zone.
Rj you are bad for me. LOL
So of course I had to google your tree. It even flowers!! LOL
http://library.sandiegozoo.org/bloom/schizolobium.html
I will check out your links in awhile. I just got home from watering.
Here is a fern walk in the San Francisco Arboretum. Talk about fern trees. We were there couple of weeks ago. Oh to have a huge park for a back yard. LOL
Sherry, photos only slow my computer down if I open them. The thumbnails show up and if I am interested enough to open them I do. So, no, the photos don't bother me. Just like the links. If I have time I open them. If not I don't.
Ok rj, so that is what that was all about. That was very kind of Blaine to be so accomodating by giving you a good citizen excuse. You are so lucky rj that you can grow those tree ferns down there.
Kell, those fern trees are amazing.
Jeanette
There are no other yards to hold a candle to Blaine's in Zion. I was there a month ago this wed. It is awesome!!
Rj I added most of those to my Wish Journal. I love the new Plant Files feature where I can add straight to my Journal.
Here is a red orchid bush we saw at Maggie's Herbs last sat.

It was covered with Butterflies!!

Rj - forgot to tell you how cool Hudson is! If that's not the picture of fun loving life, I don't know what is.
Jeannette, I've always thought the WA scenery was like that with ferns of all sizes, moss and trees and stuff. Was it you that explained the difference of living on the east or west side and how big a difference there is? I also thought you were talking about the instructions I gave about posting a link. I was suggesting adding a link in your first post on this thread "back" to the original. New followers that join in find it handy to go back and find all the past goodies this has spawned. :)
Sherry - 'cement pond' hahaha, gotta love it. So what kind of critters have you got? ;)
This message was edited Aug 26, 2005 4:46 PM
Sherry, they're sticky - They have a million seed pods on them! I am going to put the Pride of Barbados in my front yard with an orchid tree as well. I have alot to do there.
Kell, oohhh....I love those trees..They must be a wee bit hardy then during the winter? To have that near my house!!
Jeanette - I thought for sure you were in Western Wa. I went to college in Walla Walla- I hear it's turning into quite the wine country. How far from Moscow ID. is Ione? My sister lived by Mcall. Ice festival there is cool. (or use to be way back when)
Blaine - Hudson such a joy, when he's not scuttling my plants. He's calming down. He has none of these Pit Bull qualities you read about- He's a lover, not a fighter. He even will go away from dogs rather than challenge them. He's a resque from a place that resques pit bulls.
I'm still going back to look at that yard of the month! So great.
Speaking of ponds - I'm having the second pond crisis of the summer - going to have to deal with that this weekend.
Sidney - I haven't seen that variety- They are so pretty.
That is a great idea about the links in the journal. - I hadn't even thought of that!
Here is a picture of that vine/shrub that is an alley- Hudson and I like going thru the alleys - no cars -
There are some shoots growing too.. Anyone seen this before?
The title of this thread is totally misleading, you should really ask Terry to change it.
It's a long waaay back that Monika's book was even mentioned ;-(
but a book left out on a table serves as a conversation piece anyway, when visitors arrive. Looks like this is the book that initially drew some folks together and good conversation just meanders with time. How many other threads drift off but just keep going? I think I've seen prolonged conversations in just a couple of forums that I cruise. Most get a couple of replies and it drys up and falls off the vine.
Hah! Yet another piece of fat to chew on at this table. ;-)
lol!
Hear Hear! You know we'll always get back to brugs somehow. Mine are in between blooms. I bet we can persuade Kell to post us a pretty brug! huh? We can call it part II - The real dirt on soil, and the discussions that follow.
Rj
what does this have to do with using Monika's name and reference to her book?
I (we) think it is disrespectful to Monika .
(we) ? You know, I really don't care one way or the other.
But... since you put it like that, did you get pushed out front as spokesperson? Don't you hate it when that happens. Once in a greaaaaaat while I'll actually become involved with a few gossipy neighbors in the street. I guess I wander over there for the same reason I (like most people) will get a taco neck trying to look at a car wreck. Anyway, there will be some agreement about our favorite wannabe 'Sanford and Son' neighbors dragging down the rest of the block and something should be said or done. They always try to hoist me up in the air. Even when under the influence I tell them - you got a beef with them then cinch up your pants and go for it. Otherwise go back inside and keep peeking through the blinds and talking to your cat or something.
I'd think if the fair Monika had a problem with seeing the mention of her name and book (nothing like having free advertising constantly keeping your name up in lights) always at the top of the forum list, she wouldn't hesitate to contact admin. Actually though Shirley, thats probably the most valid reason. They probably have rules about a member getting free publicity for their business or products. I am aware of a couple of others in DG who have horticultural businesses of some fashion. I don't see their names, nurseries, or wares constantly waved around together. Wait - I think there's some walk on water wonderwoman in Tomatos that seems to be the final word on anything maters.
Hmmm, maybe I'll send an email to the admin and ask about it. If I do, it will be my own personal question but I'll glady share the results if anyone is interested.
Ok -- so the thread won't be completely without merit.
The only reason I got this book (actually two but thats a different story and one was immediately sent on to someone else), the only reason I got this book was because it was allowed to be so heavily referenced in this forum. They say word of mouth is the best advertising, don't they. That and the fact it seems hard to come by in the states. Oh dear me, I gotta get my hands on that bad boy.
Well boys and girls. Sunday night I'll announce the winner of this. I've read bounced back and forth between the English and German versions once. No dog ears, blue water stains (verbotten) or any other damage. But who would care? This will be Free. Well, almost.. I've given away a lot of stuff on DG lock stock barrel and postage. Thanks was all that was required.
The person that wants their very own copy of 'The Book' shall have Paypal and give me postage. Thats it!
So throw your hat in the ring and tell me something....
This message was edited Aug 26, 2005 4:36 PM
Throw my hat in, I would love to read all that Monika has to say...Judy
I had that book, and enjoyed it until my best friend borrowed it and never gave it back. Oh well. I hoped that it would help her be a better gardener but she's still managed to kill 4 Brugs since then. I guess I should have given her one of those "I tried, but it died rocks." She's more hopeless than CC! (Come on CC, it's time to defend your title) LOL
Roses R Red,
Violets R Blue
Gimme that Book
Or I'll Play the Kazoo
Edited to add great poetry. LOL

Blaine, you are wonderful and certainly know how to put people in their place don't you. Maybe she's got a gopher in her pocket. (we) LOL That's an old local saying.
Scoot, now that I am over ROTFL at Blaine's diatribe, LOL (still laughing), I think if you don't want to read this you should go on to the next thread that has only 20 or so responses. As Blaine said, this has been a lot of free advertising for Monika's book and if she doesn't want it all she has to do is tell Terry, Dave, or myself and we will certainly do something about it.
Right now, everyone knows where they want to go to get in on some good conversation and a barrel of laughs.
Jeanette
Sidney that is a beautiful tree. Does it have a fragrence?
rj, You are probably thinking about the Rain Forest on the coast. Yes there are a lot of ferns, moss, things hanging from the trees etc. It is beautiful, but there is a reason for it being called "Rain Forest". That is the western side of the state. Then there is the middle which is desert like. Then there is the eastern side. Much hotter than the west usually. Not counting this year. Very mountainous. I guess the western side has a lot of mountains too.
I grew up on the east side, moved to the coast, west side, where I lived for 30 years and now back to the east side.
Jeanette
Rj, I thought I posted about Hudson, maybe on the other thread. He is a doll and that is a precious photo!!! Pits come in two flavors wired/mean or adorable/precious, and there is no doubt which variety Hudson is - my brother had one named Truman and he was the most adorable, precious dog ever. I didn't know about the pit reputation when we had Truman, so my children were raised with him, not a sweeter dog on earth!!
The Orchid tree is so beautiful, all of those trees are great. Which ones have you tried, rj, and which ones do best?? I want to order some. I tried one of the nurseries mentioned and one told me they didn't think I could grow anything they had, I wondered if they had heard about me, lol, and were trying to save me the disappointment.
Sidney, I love that plant, but something makes me think it won't do here, can't remember what. Your pic is super!!
Blaine, here at Shabby Acres, we have a real, cement pond. I live in a small, dusty, southern town, no stop light, 4,000 residents and there are 65 swimming pools here, that I know of - there are three types: cement pond, vinyl liner - in ground, and above the ground and there are several lovely above ground pools. But, I have the only cement pond, and it has a pink cool deck, ground, pink marble, which is really a colored cement with a textured appearance and it won't tear swim suits and it's cool to walk on, instead of (((BLAZING))) hot like the club pool is. When I built the cement pond, I told them it was for my grands, but I really did it for my Goldens...
Listen here Mr. B. NOBODY pushes me anywhere .! ! ! ! !
Mr. B., LOL, it must be just a little jealousy. LOL
Jeanette
OHH..ROTFLOL - remind me not to get on your bad side! :) - and Thankyou- A bit of levity in life is like a bit of spice, or if you will a bit of lava sand to the soil! I have seen no disrespect here at all, only fun and learning- and like any conversation does amongst a group of people, goes a little astray-
Now truly there is something benefiting for me. I had no idea there is an english version of the book! Is it for sale? Paypal and postage is available!
Sherry - Thanks re Hudson..he is so nice. In doggy school, he was the best in the class!
I bought a couple of orchid trees a couple weeks ago - They're about 2 foot high. Will keep them in containers over the winter - and will put them in the front next spring.
Jeanette- I liked living in east Washington, the weather was much more reliable. I use to go snow mobiling in the blue mountains in Oregon.
I had a question about the Island Girl brugs I planted. One of them already has - a branch or sucker growing up from the bottom. I will take photo tomorrow and post - wondering I should snip that, or consider it a Y.
Those are the two I potted with the volcanic sand mixed in.
PEACE everyone!
rj
This original thread started about the middle of May, over 3 months - and what started out as a search for information, turned into a tribute to the Queen of Brugs, as well as a quest to find the identical fert/soil that she suggests. We have searched high and low, here, there and yon, in our attempt to do exactly as the person we, or I, for certain, consider the last word in brugs for the exact fertilizer and volcano dirt or stuff. Rj has has gone to Space City twice for me and at least once for Jeanette, for the only/best fertilizer, closest to the numbers in the book, so that we could do it exactly as she advises, then after fighting traffic, heat, and a closed store, Rj had to haul the stuff home, wrap it, then go back to UPS to mail it. I'm sure Rj has done this for others too. Now, we've been on the volcano dust trip for so long that I'm afraid the season will be over before we get it. In our effort to follow the words of the person we regard as the best source of information, thread members have searched all over the US and world for fert/soil and we've chewed every ounce of information to do exactly what the person we greatly admire writes in the book. I would like to make a public apology: I sincerely regret if I, in my effort to learn more about brugmansia, have stepped over the threshold of good manners. That was not my intent and and i would like to apology to all those I have offended. However, I believe this is a worth wild thread, and a worthy cause, to exchange and explore all the brug options, and I, for one, do not intend to do anything but go forward. Of course, this is not my thread, and Jeanette can and will do what she is comfortable in doing. As a possible solution, possibly you, Jnette, could ask Dave or Terry to remove the first four words and just call it: ...(Part 2) I know the active subscribers on this thread pretty well and I think that moving the party (the thread) has only made it more fun and I don't think anyone of us is ready to go home yet and I do not see taking the name and reference to the book out of the thread title as an obstacle...ya think?? Fact is, Dave owns DG, of course, and he is the first, only and final authority and I have complete and total confidence that he will do the right thing.
rj, Monika has an English translation of the book that comes with it. Mr. B can put your name in the hat for the one he is giving to a lucky winner on Sunday. BTW, I guess if we didn't respect Monika we wouldn't be trying to copy her soil and fertilizers now would we.
rj, I thought you put one Island Girl in regular, and one in the Lava Sand. Which is getting the sucker? I guess it depends on what you want to do with the plant as to whether you want to cut it off or not. Kell can tell you how to do the sucker for a nice Alley Tree. I think they let them get to be 2 or 3 feet tall before taking it off of the mother. Or, you can do like my daughter does. She likes to let them grow any way they want into a shrub.
Now don't you go messin' with Blaine and I, you hear? LOL
Jeanette
Sherry, I'm sorry, but I do not believe that anyone on this thread owes anybody an apology. Maybe one.
Jeanette
hahahaha...certainly not!
I think I ended up putting them both with lava soil. I went lite on the lava though. It's catipillar season here and they're munching up some of the leaves. I'll post them tomorrow and we can compare. I've never seen a brug get a sucker that soon though...These trees I want to do by the book, I have enough shruby brugs.
Thanks Sherry, I was a bit dismayed there for a moment.
Rj
The Red Bauhinia pictured above was Growing at Maggie's Herbs about 15 miles out of St Augustine, Fla on the St Johns River. She said it was the only plant she wrapped in the winter.
It grows up to 6' tall shrub by August every year.
I don't think I could overwinter it here either.
