Attention 'Big Gun' Aroiders

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Thought you 'Big Gun' Aroiders would get a kick out of this

http://blueboard.com/aroid/index.php?topic=41.new

BTW: A certain FL Natural Selections Exotics grower is offering Alocasia robusta for sale now.
They should go PRETTY fast.

Ric

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are so bad Henry. So very very very bad. You and Dick. Dick sends me pictures of her gingers. I must say to myself:
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

So much for that, LOL. I am off to look.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have got to stay away from those sites untill I get another bed dug.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

..... uh, gee ... thanks, Ric. I am now one step closer to a divorce!

But, having a Robusta in the collection outweighs the mometarry conflict that will occir when she learns of this lateset acquisition!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I got my robusta from a florida guy for $24, wish I could remember who it was!!LOL

At least you have a bed to dig, Susie. I have no place left. I just looked at the picture. It is bigger than my house. Tom would have a cow.

How fast is yours growing, Kyle? Do you have it in a huge pot?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I have two ordered.
We have totally encouraged our neighbor's young son to go for the big guns.
(Like you need to encourge a budding young botanist to grow big plants! LOL)
He's been gardening w/ us for about 6 years now since he was 9.
He's getting one of them.

I'm some getting Gunnera manicata in return.
Seems his dad works for the zoo here and they have it in there dinosaur garden.
I walked under one in L.A. at the zoo.
Man!
If you've never seen it here's a link.

A tough grow but hey................

Ric

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Gosh, there would be room in my greenhouse for both of those babies........I see the gunnera is sold out. :>( If anyone has any spares of either.............(waving hand wildly.....) I would pay, not expect them free.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh, they have them in nurseries here but they usually are too huge to mail. I may sneak to one across the bay tomorrow for a new phormium, and they may have some in gallon pots. I will look for you.

They have them growing all over the San Francisco Arboretum. They get huge. They use them as filler plants. And fill they do. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They are fun. I recall they also had some in their dinosaur exhibit too, though I didn't take any pics there.

My DH running away form me, hoping it all will be over soon.

We've been growing Petasites japonicus for years.
It's about the the biggest leaf that's hardy here.
We are now getting reports of Gunnera wintering over so...........why not try it. lol

Ric

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I love big leaf plants (Oh Kell, I forgot to mention that category...) but gunnera, petasites think it's too darned hot here.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow ... that stuff is considered a weed around here! I had one invade one of my wife's hosta gardens this spring. I thought it was really cool at first, but when it spread out to the point of stealing all light from my ferns and "Thai Beauty" ... well, it had to go! The spread of the plant at that stage was well over 5'.

Little did I know.

Anyhow, there's a species of gunnera that is winter hardy and has naturalized around here in parts of western Loudoun and into Clark county. If it ships well bare root I would be happy to try and hook you up, Ric.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Kell, I want one too! I want one too!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

please be carefull because the pick of the borneo giant from natural selection is different than most robusta or what people are selling as robusta. trust me on this i know what im talking about on this i have even seen people selling macroriza as the borneo giant.
Im reall good friends with a man that is known around the world and even has written papers for the international aroid society's yearly publication.

natural selection is the only place i would trust to give me the real thing they are verry trustworthy and she know's alot about aroids

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Peta's would work down there.
In the shade in a bog that's about the only way.
I've seen it in full sun in standing water in GA.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you much for that info Carla. I have seriously considered buying it myself. I am trying to talk myself out of it. LOL

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Carla,
Assuming Enid didn't get blown into Orlando I'll soon have both from here to show off.
I know they is a difference in the sap color between robusta and BG.
I'm sure they would have tested them.
Have you been over to Williams GH there in Louisville?

Buck if you've got Gunnerra bare root I'll front the postage to test it out!!!!

Ric

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Ric:

I'll do my best to get my buddy Redz to dig some up Monday morning so I can get them to the P.O. same day. I'll let you know as soon as I get ahold of him (Mama-san had me destroy our beast, but Redz has these things growing all over the place on his landlord's property ... his landlord must hold the same philosophy as my wife about these beasts as she has him just mow over them ...)

Rather than hooking me up with postage, perhaps we could reason together over a more interesting means of recompense!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

wow i might even want in on that action i love theese

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, Carl ... (or are we entertaing some weird online identity crisis and would prefer Carla? If so, that's fine, I was once known in certain internet circles as "Uncle Brenda," but alas, that's another story for another day)

Anyhow .................. in your case, Jerry, I may feel obligated to barter a bit more creatively with you. You know, given your sources, resources, and access to all things botanically uncommon!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

let me know what you are looking for and i bet i can get it.
my wife is carla she got the account for me and i use it more than she does lol

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

& i thought you only worked on 1968 cars :-)

Dick

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

by the way i love monsters the more and bigger the better my wife gets angle trumpets, moonflower, amorphallus and i get all the huge plants and canna's lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

At least that issue has an answer. I thought your name was either Carla B or Carl AB, like washboard! LOL Born in 68, same as me? Hey, I have too much time on my hands.

Somebody tell me when Ric is expecting a box. I know he is gone all day and I will be sure to keep it protected. LOL

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

bogweedbuck i noticed you are looking for portadora i might be able get babies for ya or black stem, angle trumpet just let me know and if i got it cool if not we can work out something i just starten moonflower and castor seeds but you may not want those as they can kill you lol but really we will figure something out and ill go see brian wed or thursday and let him know that you're cool

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Jerry (sorry for the Carla,lol)
If you're working at Brian's then there is absolutely nothing I can tempt you w/.
(Though I do have tons of un-named Brugs. lol)
That is Aroid Heaven.
I've had some cuttings picked up from there by one of our salesman.
Awesome plants!

Buck,
You've got mail.

Just great, now I've got to change my security system.
Oh well at least my guard dog can hear you coming.
Though she can't trim the bananas! lol

Ric

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

oh im not working for him we are just good friends

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

OMG! You brandish a joke at my banana woes! LOL

Maybe I will save the digging and potting of the five foot Alocasias until you get here tomorrow! I'll lounge on the deck and watch you work! Then you can dig up the other five bananas, repot the little ones and dig up all the other ears. OR you can just hand over said box. LOL

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well it does make it a bit easier to transport being shorter and all....................... :-)

We'll bring some serious digging tools w/ us tomorrow.
W/ all this rain it should make short work.

Jerry,
Sorry I misread your post.
Those are some serious shots on your link.
Thanks for posting.
My SO and I agree Brian's would be a VERY expensive trip! lol

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ric I was just kidding!! LOL I have to get out for more good dirt anyway. I don't think I can mix it fast enough to fill all the tubs Peggy brought. I haven't really been in a hurry to fly through anything since I have to dig all new beds at the new house still. Now, if you wanted to take the kids for a couple of hours......HA!

Thank goodness I won't drive to Louisville!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

well thanks for all the good feedback on my photos and every time i go to brian's i drop 50 to 100 or help him for certain things i want. but he has around 200 species of philodindron a field of cannas and a field of amorphophophalls field 4 larg greenhouses ant it takes him and anouther person 2 to 3 weeks full time just to get everything under plastic for the winter

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, Kell, that would be soooo cool if you could find one for me. I just wouldn't want some little dinky thing that is so small that you'd wonder if it was going to grow. Like some of the ee's I bought from a catalogue that I thought would be a little bigger than what was sent. :>( See what you can find and LMK......Thanks.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

well you can buy large tubers and rizomes but they get expensive real quick.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, now that I know the whole story -- as it were -- perhaps it would be more fun to simply refer to you as Uncle Carla. What is the most aggressive spreading EE that you you know of that is really on the small side (caladiums have *way* too much color for what I have in mind)

well pink china will group a huge clump. the ones you put up from his moms were planted erly last year so this was there second season.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Ah, cool! I have it planted in the perfect spot, then! Know of anything still somewhat smaller that divides quickly?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

hey bog i just started some moonflowers and castor plants heres the castor plant i got my seed from
i dont know if you would even be interested

(WARNING CASTOR PLANTS produce castor bean or tick seed wich contain ricen a dedly nerve agent 11 times stronger than cobra venom so never eat the bean. if you have small children do not grow this plant.

ok that said i love them and will have a few for trade real soon if interested
i really wanna work out a deal on the ee's you said you friend might dig up

That looks a lot like Carmencita Red. Are the flowers bright red? Do you grow them in a greenhouse for the winter?
