You never know where you're going to find hoyas.

Long Beach, CA

Superthrive is great for starting cuttings and getting growth going, but I don't think it does much for getting BLOOMS. For that I think you need bloom type fertilizers and maybe some Eleanors sprayed on.
It is a shame they don't sell it there. Won't Eleanor ship ya some from the website ordering?
Why is it so complicated to send anything up there?

Sandy, I have something called Thrive Alive. I wonder if that would be similar. It says you can use it to help start cuttings and as a foliar spray as well a watering. I put a drop in the water with my cuttings a couple of days ago and I think it's helped a lot. It's made from kelp that grows off the coast of BC.

Marcy, I googled and couldnt find the Eleanor website for some reason....I must be brain dead today..do you know it offhand?...I do fertilize with a 20/20/20 diluted and also with a bloom booster like Schultz's bloom plus which is 10/60/10 diluted alternately ......Yes i agree, it seems to be a big pain to get cuttings, plants and the like across the border.....thats why i thought going down there might be easier, if i ever get there....lol..

Sandy, I will have to look into the Thrive Alive...i have never heard of it before....did you get it at a nursery or hydroponic store?....sounds interesting for starting cuttings.....

Sorry, it's actually called Thrive Alive B-1. I got it at Home Hardware so I imagine it would be available just about everywhere they sell garden supplies. It says it's a tonic for plants.

Thanks Sandy, they have a Home Hardware here...I will look for it......

Sounds like a plan, I'll have a look too. Although, as I was telling Christina this morning, one of the cuttings she sent to me, the H. verticillata has already sprouted scads of roots. I only put them in water last Wednesday. The H. shepherdi also looks like the nodules are growing out as well. Thats fast! Now if only I could get my H. kerrii to get a move on ....I know...patience...sigh.

Abbotsford, BC(Zone 8a)

Those ones take root quick obviously! you are lucky....how did you root them Donna? ..That kerrii seems to be a stubborn one for me too...i have tried and failed rooting it....We need all the outside help we can get, thats for sure..lol...I will definately look for the Thrive Alive that Sandy recommended....

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and since I subscribed I was mainly learning than posting but I think this info would be useful for Canadians.

Superthrive:
I found it at Bustan store in Toronto
http://www.bustan.ca/product_detail.asp?menuID=21&SID=83&PID=46
You can order it online or, if you prefer, I can always buy it for you and send.

Eleanor's VF-11 Plant Food:
Here is the Eleanor's website http://www.vf-11plantfood.com/
I spoke to Eleanor herself and she definitely is not sending VF-11 to Canada but she had many calls from Canada already. With some patience someone will finally start selling it one day over here.
She directed me to Charley's website ( http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/ ), US seller, they ship to Canada.
I asked for the cost of shipping and they calculated it at around 15USD to Toronto for a gallon bottle (25USD).
I added Ontario tax (15%) to it and found too expensive to order for now.

I did find something else I use for now : Liquid Karma. I bought it as well at Bustan.

I can't tell any results, just started to use it.

HTH,
Ewelina

Great info Ewelina! Thanks! I can go there on my lunch hour even - well, next week when my boss is on holidays anyway...lol.

Oh Christine, your sneaky...lol....

welcome to the forum and thanks for the info Ewelina......that sure helps.....let us know if you find any good results with the Liquid Karma....that sounds interesting too.....I will check that site out ....thanks :)

Thanks Ewelina. It's nice to know Superthrive is available in Canada. I've seen it mentioned on several forums a number of times.

Donna...way to go!! It sounds like you're doing a great job in the rooting department. I don't have H. kerrii but if I ever get a cutting it's nice to know that they don't root easily so I'll be patient as well.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the tip, Ewelina. Welcome also to the Hoya Forum. :)

Is this the same thing? I bought it as Hoya purpurea fusca

Looks like H. carnosa to me. Most of the ones I have found labled purpurea fusca look to me to be H. vitalina.

For a long time, H. vittelina was called H. fuscomarginata (dark edges). But the real name IS H. vittelina. The word 'fusco/fusca' appear sometimes in names...H. purpureo-fusca means reddish/dark margins (I think...or something like that). So, the average nurseryman or scamming hoya dealer hears 'fusco/a' in a name and decides which combination best suits the purpose. Sad.

One of the BEST ways of knowing whether it IS H. purpureo-fusca is to look at the venation....H. p-f has 3 main nerves (tri nerved). The others, H. vittelina and other imposters, have one main center nerve).
