What's up with these Caladiums?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

So, is this some special type or are these malformed? They don't have the typical heart shaped leaves. They come straight out of the stem and have more of an oval shape. When they sprouted, they looked like they might be plain green ears and now look.

Even the markings are odd.

These are not odd, very pretty color, and I saw this plant some where on the net and that also have leaves same like yours.
Beautiful combination also.

Thank you Kaleem. I have actually be a bad plant mother. They are in 4" pots in a flat. I sat them next to the shade garden about 3 months ago and they never got planted. Whoops! I believe they said they want to move to Hawaii. LOL

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Leaves are similar to these caladiums.

Now those are interesting! I thought they looked like Thai ones in a way. I started to ask which were in your picture then saw Thailand in the addy. :) Those are so neat!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

gumlla those are really pretty, they are so different from the ones I have planted. I love the way the color swirls around the leaf.

Badseed yours are very pretty, where did you get them? I got mine from the coop that was held here at DG's.

Linda

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks Linda. I didn't want to spend much on them this year since I can't seem to over winter them. I bought 2-3 named varieties and a bag of mixed ones at local stores. Those were from the mixed bag.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Badseed, I cut off the foliage and stick mine in a dark closet in the basement. I don't even bother to remove them from their pots. In late spring, I move them under grow lights and give them a little water. It's like they have internal clocks, as some will start to sprout on their own even without water or light.

In the past, when I have removed them from the dirt - I would always lose some. I suppose they got too dried out. But most of mine make it when left in their pots and they come back larger that the previous year.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Chele those are nice. They overwinter in the ground here but in TN I did like Nathalyn. They are a little slow coming back in the spring, but once they pop up, they grow fast.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

badseed...I have Caladium 'Thai Beauty' and yours sure look a heckuva lot like mine!

Kaleem...do you by any chance know the name of those pictured in your link?

I feel the *need* to find them! (lol!)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I found this link called Thai Beauty too that looks just like the one posted by Kaleem

lol! Hmm...maybe their growth and patterns are variable, because although the colors look similar...those patterns don't!!

And...I got mine from Stokes!!

Chele,

All those caladiums are the same as I got in my "Mixed Bag" bought off the checkout rack at the HomeDepot last spring. The year before we were able to buy individual bags of Named types. I guess because of the hurricanes of 2004 and the shortage, that's why they sold the mixed bags last spring.

Certainly does look like a Thai Beauty, but I just can't bring myself to believe they would throw Thai bulbs in the mix.

My measley little ten bulbs have multiplied over the summer to about 30 big leaves. They have all bloomed and look like they are on their way out by now.

I am so glad I don't have to dig bulbs here. They shall rest as they are til next spring.

BTW, if you don't get a chance to throw those back in the closet or whereever when you move, let me know and I shall resupply your caladiums.

It looks surprisingly a lot like a Thai Beauty (pics linked in multiple posts above). I have 2 variations of the Thai Beauty in my gardens and early on the pink dominated strap leaves with green veining is not as apparent as it is in the more mature leaves. In some cases, the really intense colorations won't kick in until the 2nd or 3rd season.

Point being, that picture reminds me a LOT of a young, immature Thai Beauty. What scares me is the number of pink leaf, green vein strap-leaves are being sold as "Thai Beauty."

Try and remember to shoot a couple pics at the end of the summer and re-post here! :o)

I would not be surprised if the Home Depot "mixed bags" contained Thai Beauties. I imagine a lot of caladium growers jumped on cultivating these ... I mean, look at how much the price has dropped in the past year or so despite the destructive year the Florida region suffered in '04.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I saw one of these at Home Depot today Chele. The newer leaves looked like yours and the older ones like the link Kaleem posted. I resisted getting it, barely. Well, actually I bought another one with huge very tall leaves and red spots. Can't get everything ya know!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oooooooo Next spring can someone buy me a 'mixed bag' of those???? Love em!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I almost bought it but got this huge one instead, figured it would like hanging with the big guys.

Carol, I told you I left you a tease. :) Do you want the rest of mine? I have a dozen or more left and I won't bother to replant them when I move. I considered just leaving them potted but am not sure I want to bother. Let me know.

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Actually I downloaded that link from a website...... as I am also looking this beautiful Thai Caladium but no success.
BadSeed you are lucky because you have this plant .
Here is a photo on mine Caladiums.

My older leaves to have the color all the way down.

Oh, and none of the leaves have the points at the back behind the stem. They are all oval shaped.

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Yes... your plant is much prettier then mine. I love the color on your leaves.

Awe, thanks Kaleem! I just got lucky. :)

Yeah, that's a young Thai Beaty, Badseed. How cool that that came in a "grab bag"/mixed bag. Good P.R. on the part of the grower!

Calif_Sue, which caladium is that? That's really nice!!!!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

No idea of its name, Home Depot special.
Here are HD caladiums.

And more.
I resisted as these are more the colors Kell likes, I am more in the hot hued colors now.

Yeah, I've seen all those there. Yours, on the other hand (with the polka dots, etc.) I dunno, it just sorta jumped out at me. I'd be interetsed in discussing a trade for a few cormlettes later this year, if you're interested, of course.

Back to the "Thai Beauty" thing, though ...

I have 5 plants that are all labeled Thai Beauty, and they differ a good bit from the pictures I've seen online. The young leaves are identical to the ones in the top 2 photos in this thread. Ultimately, they get that intense, translucent pink leaf with green veins, very similar to many of the leaves in the middle part of the picture 2 posts above me right now (Calif_Sue's Aug 22, 2005, 12:40PM post) HOWEVER ... I believe Thai Beauty is a strap leaf variety as opposed to the more traditional heart/arrow shape. Again, looking at the pic from Calif_Sue immediately above, it appears that the adult leaves are strap form.

Either way, some people got a treat in their "grab bag" from Home Depot this year! Hopefully we'll all have better access to named varieties and the like next season. 2004 really took its toll on Florida growers!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Sure I can send you some BogweedBuck, just let me know how and what as this is the first year I have ever grown them. I bought corms off the co-op in spring. I will not be removing them from their pots, just place them under the eaves of the house so they dont get too wet. They have to come thru the winter on their own.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh man, now I've stumbled across another similar caladium by the name of "Pink Symphony" which looks like could easily pass as a Thai Beauty wanna-be.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, I do not know if I am happy or sad. I was out repotting some plants today and digging stuff up and ran across the caladiums again. The ones in question are marked Carolyn Whorton. They should look like this: http://www.dutchbulbs.com/spring/z32884.70232.html I still wonder if they are malformed or marked wrong. LOL

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, what do yours look like nowadays?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Mostly green with pink by the stems and still oval. I just repotted them yesterday. I'll get a pic in a bit. :)

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow ... how much sun would you say they're getting? I have (what I assume to be) the same bulbs from the "grab bag" and mine have gone ape-poop with the color change!

These are grown in an area that gets full sun from shortly after sunrise until real early afternoon (before it gets to the typically ungoldly hot part of the day around here this time of year)

I'm still somewhat at a loss for what the actual name of this Caladium bicolors truly is.

BogweedBuck
Love the colors of your plant.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Kaleem!! I was really tickled when they came up this pretty. Like I mentioned earlier, these were some corms from a Caladium "grab bag" that I believe I got at a Home Depot.

I have a friend I've known for some years now who also lives in Pakistan, but I hate to admit that I have NO idea what part of the country he resides in. He's an artist by the name of Babar Moghul ... of course, this might be a lot like asking someone from Korea if they know a young man with the last name "Kim." LOL

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Yes you are very difficult to search with the name only, I will keep my eyes open and when some one with name name of Babar Mughal and he is artist also I will catch him. By cast I am also Mughal but in Pakistan we have lots of Mughal .....same like kims.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Gotcha! My real last name, which is Hungarian, is also incredibly common back in Hungary (like Kim in Korea, or Smith or Jones in America)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Buck, "gone ape-poop"! LOL! Ok what would be your definition of this term? I think my men here would like this one!
