Ruellias, Mexican Petunias "Katie"

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Here is a picture of my dwarf ruellia. These are the Katie series, I have pink, blue and white. They bloom year round here as long as we don't get a frost, they take the heat and will not die if I forget to water them.

Well, I thought I had taken a picture of the blue and the white, but I can't find it. I'll post again tomorrow.

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

Ok--seeds please?? Mix'em?!! I love these too!! I had a purple one and a light pink one last year. I still have purple seeds I think if you want some?!! Bonnie

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK, if I can find some that haven't popped open, I'll put them in with the jatropha. Should I just fix you an envelope with some of everything in it???

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

hehehe Guess soo???? I Love those seed pods for Ruella, don't you!! Just as fun as Balsam seed pods!!! Thanks!! You are a GEM!! Bonnie

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

There is a wild ruellia that grows everywhere here, even when it's mown back on the roadsides it comes back out and flowers. The local kids take the seed pods and put them in a glass of water to watch them "pop".

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love this. and it is PINK!! LOL. Where are the other pictures Susie? Promises Promises. SO PRETTY!!!

I thought I just bought a pink Ruellia last week but it looks nothing like this. I will take a pic of mine.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I remembered to take the blue one. Do you want me to start you a piece of the pink one Kell?

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, I love them !! I guess another plant to add to my want list.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Are these the big bloom ones? I am not sure what the names of these things are, but there is a larger blue one and a samller one, but I did not know there is a large pink or white. Yours looks like the big one. Durn, I need to start saving labels.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

By the way, my variegated mac just keeps getting bigger and greener - no white at all. I divided the babies and they are, one by one, turning all green. I have not fertilized at all in over a month, yet green green greener. Plus I put one in the shade and one in the sun, same thing. I need to stunt those that are still small, so they will stay variegated. I will get a picture tomorrow, so you can see. Hey Ele ear, did you paint on them spots?

Foley, AL

LOL... It came from a good mommy....

ely

cala I love katie

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ok, mine is Ruellia macrantha. In the nursery it was so pretty. It got here and immediately got weak kneed and flopped over. I need to get a ribbon to tie around the stems. It cost me $24 too, way too much. I am a sucker for new plants.

I like yours better. I love your blue too. Both are great.

Roz, these are really short plants but the flowers are large and they flower all the time. I guess I need to take some cuttings and root some for everybody!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, where did you find yours? I have been looking everywhere for the Ruellie Macrantha. I had one last year that bloomed all summer, but then I lost it overwinter.
I kept it on the patio instead of putting it in the greenhouse. Bad mistake.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, yours is pretty. I'll trade you mine for a piece of yours(mine wasn't $24 though, so I guess I'll have to send you 8 of mine, lol)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Shoot, so it won't make it outside over winter, Patricia,?? You had yours in a pot not in the ground? I need to look this plant up. They had them at Golden Nursery on 2nd Ave. in Foster City is it? Right over the bridge, have you been there? They carry lots of Annie Annuals too.

I will try to root some for you 2.. Susie, I want the money difference. LOL.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I had mine in a pot under the patio Kell. It looked fine until Spring, and then it just died. You don't get near as cold as I do out here though. No, I have never heard of Golden Nursery. I will have to make a note of it and drive out there.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Remember the little babies I'm holding hostage Kell??? The little caesalpinias.............

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Susie. Don't be mean to me.

Patrica, do you like flax? They had a few I haven't seen elsewhere. Also they have great metal work for the garden. A huge variety of trellises. best I have ever seen.

Here is a flax I got there.

And here is another kind. I love them.

I do like flax Kell, if only they didn't get so big. I have a hard time giving up any of my space to something that doesn't bloom. I am trying to use more foliage plants these day's though.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

But that is just it, they add color all the time, no need to wait on flowers. They have lots now that get only about 3 ft tall, and you can divide the clump if they get to wide. I have one that is as pretty as the prettiest pink flower you can find. I will find a picture later.

I wonder if there is a flax forum on here . Patricia, have you noticed how they are everywhere now in store and street plantings. I do not know if I never took notice before of if they suddenly just exploded onto the scene. Such variations I am seeing. And I covet them all.

Susie, do you have some in Texas??

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

That is part of the problem I have had with them Kell, is that you see even the pretty one's all over in our street plantings in Dublin and Livermore. I tend to stick with plants that you don't see in the street plantings. But there are definately some really pretty one's. I have even gone to the nursery specifically to look at them. Maybe when I get ready to give up on my brugs.

Foley, AL

I saw flax in southern living one will that grow everywhere?

ely

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I may be wrong Ely, but I think they prefer hot dry climates.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

you lucky gals. There is no place in my neck of the woods where I can get those fancy flax. I did find some on ebay and it was a guy from across the pond who let me know in no uncertain terms that my country's govt. was "screwed up" because they wouldn't let him mail to USA.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I haven't seen the real fancy ones yet in the group plantings, Patricia. Mostly I see the huge tenax ones, they are much bigger.

Ely, they are fairly easy from what I read. And they must be if they have them here as freeway plants. LOL. The Phormium tenax are hardier and some can surivive down to 18 degrees. The dwarf cookianum hybrids I think like it a bit warmer and can tolerate it drier. Zone 8 and 9. They like water though when mature they can do well with little except in cold places where they have a hard time survivng winter if water starved in summer.

This is my favorite one I have.

Jester.

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Jester has a slightly arching habit and is one of the ones that is less cold tolerant..

Here is another favorite. It is an upright variety. The Guardsman. They are so dramatic.

Hard to beat its color.

Susie, I will have to get you one now that I took your thread.

Thumbnail by Kell
Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I haven't seen those here Kell, we are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to getting new stuff. I always thought of flax as the annual with the little blue flowers.....I need to go look these up.
Yes, you have to send me a plant because you took my thread away!!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Those are really pretty Kell. I will have to pay more attention to them.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Vossner, I found some phoriums online at

.heronswood.com/catalog/listing?tcuRqWrq;Grasses::0:100;674

I can't get my link to work so I took off the h t t p:// w w w so you can add it to the front of the rest of the link above and get there. I had to put spaces in that to keep it from linking again to no where. So take the spaces out. LOL It is Heronswood Nursery. They had a lot listed.

I may even order a few. I wish they had pics of more. But some you can find pics if you google them.

Patricia, if you find any colorful ones during your nursery hopping can you email me??
