Oh, those pics! Those blooms are so (can I say it?) cute! Now I want a DSP. See what you two did??? LOL Do the dwarfs still have lots of fragrance? I don't really care, just wondering. Hmm, maybe I can convince DH that I'm a Plumie prodigy and I DESERVE another one! Yeah, that's it! I did so well w/ my first one, w/ basically no knowldege...he he he.

I haven't even been outside today, it's cool in the house, so it looks like Plumie can't go out to play again today. I may have to get my lights set up pretty soon if this keeps up. But that's ok, other things will need the lights soon enough too.

Have a great day!

How did I forget the scent? DUUUHH!!
She has a very soft and mild scent like a afterbath powder.
Very pleasing. ;)
There were just 2 for sale almost exactly like mine for $40.- each
Id expect to pay around $70.- each for a well grown 3 tipper with an inflo.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

ooooh, that sounds so nice. Where did you find it?

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

A dear friend on another forum sold it to me.
I have bought many from her and traded as well.

Hi Michael, that is a beautiful plant! No, that is a different Brad and a very sweet man who lives in New Jersey and Florida, but Brad Willis is a member here under ncassleberryfla, but he hasn't posted yet since I sent him a membership.

Heathrjoy, Florida Colors has grafted ones for around $25. Here's their web site: http://www.floridacolors.com/ I haven't smelled my dwarf flowers yet, but I am waiting to!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Clare,
Are Lucs grafted DSPs single tip?
These are triples and grafted I think for the extra $15.- if you have it, You get 3 tips and an inflo!!
No waiting for blooms WOO-HOO!! 8D

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Michael, my DSP arrived with two tips, but it is small. I also got one from Hetty for $30, I think, and that one has three tips. I still haven't seen blooms from either one yet. By the way, My little lavender graft did not survive. It turned black from the bottom and traveled upward. I think that is why I had branches growing on the stem. I think my mistake was that there was no cambium from both pieces touching. I have heard that, when grafting wisterias, it is important that the cambium touch the other cambium somewhere because these are the cells that multiply. I do not know if this is true for plumerias, but it would make sense that it is true for plumerias also.

Edited to fix funky spacing:-)

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

It most certainly is true ;)
Sorry for your loss. :(
Buy some cheapies and keep trying!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, okay. That was my problem then. There was no cambium touching. Darn! Thanks for the sympathy. I won't give up:-)

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Never give up the good fight!! or the ship! for you sci-fiers lol! :P

How about beam me up and tell me what a cambium is???

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Heathrjoy, I copied this definition from the Internet:

"Definition: A tree's cambium is the layer of cells lying between the wood and bark of a stem from which new bark and wood cells originate."

Here a the link in the Garden Terms section of this forum with more definitions: http://davesgarden.com/terms/go/145.html

Thanks for the info, that is very interesting. Plumie is now indoors as the remnants of Katrina blow through w/ lots of rain and wind.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Darn that rain and wind. Stay dry, and more importantly, keep that plumie dry! LOL!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I put most of my gals into a penned in section of my yard and roped the pots around to prevent blow over. I brought my lil Miss DSP inside as well as my Adenium Arrogant who is in bloom.
We are expecting heavy rain and winds tonight. :(
Oh those poor people who have lost so much.
I pray for the restoration of their families.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Amen to your prayer.

Sorry, but I had to laugh, it sounds more like you're afraid they're going to run off ran than get blown away. I hope they all fair well. I'd move my stuff up on my porch, but I'm out of room there too. I'm going to my first plant swap this weekend...WHOO HOO!! With all the rain, my porch is covered w/ potting supplies. I really need a potting shed. Of course, I need 10+ acres and a barn too.

.......someday........

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Heathrjoy, I need those things too!

Amen to your prayer also, Michael.

Stay safe and dry, you guys.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

They were predicting potential tornado cells our way earlier,
It has been down graded to thunderstorms.
Would you believe we actually need the rain?
We are going into our summers end drought.
A few inches would be nice.
I was hoping for a lil minor flooding actually.
A recent truck accident on one of our interstates sent a huge load of ammonium sulfide into the stream of my youth. It had a 100% fish kill from there to 14 miles downstream where it meets the Delaware River :(
A lil flooding would help to flush it all out.
Man..... what a bummer, an absolutely beautiful fishing resource gone....

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully they will make sure it is cleaned up well and restock it when it is ready.

Last night they were saying our weather tonight was supposed to be tornadoes/heavy thunderstorms. Instead we ended up closing the day w/ a sunset. We've had lots of rain the last few days tho.

Let us know how things go w/ the truck accident and the stream.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

So sorry to hear that too, Michael. Those poor fish. That is a darn shame. I hope they clean it up well too and that the rain helps. It's been a long while since we've had rain here too. It would be nice not to have to water nearly every day.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

When you use a heat mat what temp do you set it to? Looking into getting one, but want to make sure I get the right kind.
Thanks!
Heather

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Heather, mine doesn't have a thermometer, but it feels nice and hot to the touch. Sorry, that wasn't a very scientific description, was it? I had mine on a baking sheet on the stove for a while there. My motto is it can't be too hot! Well, okay, probably less than say 160 but more than 70 is best. Maybe someone with a thermometer here can respond.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Not real scientific, but better than no info at all!! I really didn't know if they were supposed to be warm or hot, so that does help more than you know. A temp would help if anyones does know.
Thanks!
H

I think I've heard the number 85, but I can't be sure of that. Michael has a heating pad, I think. Maybe he will see this and respond.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I dont use a standard heating pad.
I make a heated platform from plywod with a long skirt.
I then use an oil filled radiator underneath it set in the upper 90s.
This can be expensive to run though, best to use this for them once they are started, at 85 degrees.
To start the seeds I use a smaller version of the table with 100 watt light bulbs under it sitting on aluminum foil to reflect all the heat back tot he plywood.
Careful not too close!! You dont want a fire ;)
Seeds start best at 86 to 95 degrees, any hotte and you 'steam cook' them.
I hated that lesson!!
Some hot peppers actually require over 93 degrees to germinate and this is how I learned it all. ;)

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

GREAT info Michael! Thank you so much! I'm still looking for info on water bed heaters from anyone who has used them. Not getting much response tho. I do have those oil filled heaters. If you only use them for rooting Plumies and starting seeds do you really have to run them for that long of a period of time? It may be longer for the Plumies, but for starting seeds it shouldn't be more than a week or so, should it? Most things germinate that fast even w/out heat, and I'd think the heat should make it even faster. Am I missing something?

My only problem is that every winter we end up loaning out those heaters to other folks or the church. I don't even know who has them right now. LOL But my name is on them. Maybe I'll have to make some calls to locate them. I could at least use one for the Plumie now, until someone else needs it when it gets good and cold at night. I guess that people being warm is more important than my plants afterall.

Thanks!
H

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

If youre rooting you need maximum heat till it roots and that can be a long time depeding on the plumie.
Seeds vary, some in as little as 3 or 4 days for sure others have taken me up to 23 days.
I dont figure itll take this long or that long, I set it up and go do somethin else till they pop or rot.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, I've been of Dave's for a while, but I'm back now. I missed your advice sooo very much! Thanks for your help.

My plumie is still plugging along. It's by a bright-ish window. I did lose two leaves, but other than that it's not looking too bad. No new growth since she's come indoors. Once my plant room is fully set up I'm hoping I may get a little bit of growth.

I just wanted to say thanks, I don't know if my plumie would have come this far without you! Thanks for helping me out! :) I can't wait till next year, maybe I'll have some wonderfully scented blooms...then be able to talk DH into another plumie!
Heather
