I am in the middle of moving all my morning glory photos to their own new website--the old one was too crowded. The first section, Ipomoea alba, is up and available.

Coming soon: Ipomoea acuminata
Photos of Evening Glory a.k.a. Moonflower Vine
Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing.
One big change this year is that I have taken RON_CONVOLVULACEAE's advise and annotated all the images. That way when someone asks me about or wants to comment on an image, they can refer to it by name rather than saying something like, "...the one with the two blooms and the bee off to the side..."
Also the new site is dedicated to morning glories so I will not run out of space so quickly. Although I am sure that it will take several months to migrate everything from the old site to the new.
Also, as hard as it is to believe, there is some information on the web regarding morning glorys that is slightly inaccurate. No, really! ...and I do not want to be a contributor to the disinformation. So if you see anything on my site that is in error, please do not hesitate to let me know. Ron doesn't hesitate.
Disclaimer: I will not be entertaining any notions that "Evening Glory" is not the best common name for Ipomoea alba. ;)

Kevin,
GORGEOUS!
MoonFlower Vines are still at the top of my favorites.
great shot of a lovely bloom :)
Emma,
Please have a look at the last two photos on the page.
I think that you mentioned that your vines had runners or something like that last year. I noticed these. Are they what you were talking about?
Notice that the leaf has a different shape than the other leaves on the plant.
I have been hanging these back on the fence. But they do not seem to want to twine. I have left these that you see on the ground. But I do not see any signs of rooting.
"...the one with the two blooms and the bee off to the side..."...Sounds like a 'new' name...very Japanese (!)...very poetic (!)...and
"Also, as hard as it is to believe, there is some information on the web regarding morning glorys that is slightly inaccurate"....
I'm just wondering if this(?!)
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/88648/index.html
is the 'Ipomoea acuminata' that you are planning on presenting next...
"Disclaimer: I will not be entertaining any notions that "Evening Glory" is not the best common name for Ipomoea alba. ;)"
Too Late (!),the Chinese have already beat you on the draw to that common name being claimed by them for the unknown species of little yellow moonflower..so the choice of common names should also differentiate between different moonflowers...

"Notice that the leaf has a different shape than the other leaves on the plant....well if you were a vine stem, ordinarilly 'standing tall',and now 'crawling' along on the ground looking for a place to root, you might change the shape of your leaves too...
But I do not see any signs of rooting."...
They are looking(!) for a good place to root or(!) a good person to root them(!)...
(re:Gail -This aforementioned text is to be taken literally,no 'inverted' 'inkblot image' responses please(!),this is a serious description of a vine slinking in the underbrush...)
Kevin,I'm just wondering about why you chose to use the wooden pieces that you used for the trellis up onto the tree, instead of wrapping some of the various types of light gage wire fencing around the trunk...I'm not faulting it...I'm just wondering if there was any particular reason you chose that approach...
What were the seed germination results of the Ipomoea alba seeds,..the ones that were ripened indoors in a valiant attempt to increase the viable seed harvest of seeds that otherwise would have certainly turned to frozen mush from the late season outdoor icy temperatures...any luck with seeds of this species(?)...;
"please do not hesitate to let me know"...
Ha! Ron, you are the best forum poster on this or any forum.
Thanks for the info. So the vine stem reacts to being on the ground by adopting a different appearance and growth habit. Interesting.
I did not see signs of any rooting, but the grass is very thick where those runners are going. So I filled a pot with soil and wrapped the runners into it. Stay tuned.
On the seed issue, I should have put it on the web page. Well, none of the 40 or so seeds that I harvested from last year germinated. Also, none of the seeds that Emma sent that were from the Canary Islands germinated.
Since we have determined that I am a better photographer than seed germinator, I am not going to make excuses and say that the seeds were to blame.
The photos you see here are from seeds that I ordered from Mountain Meadow Seed.
On the choice of trellis materials, I should have put that on the web page too... I chose the wood because I had it lying about. In retrospect, I also figure it looks better and is more of a conversation starter than wire fencing. Also, the vines come off of it very easily in the Fall and I can reuse it in the Spring. I had a similar setup last year and I reused them on my Ipomoea acuminata....uh, indica this year.
Gerris2,
I actually discard more than half of the photos I take. What is left looks pretty good. I am a perfectionist. It is a curse.

Hi Kevin,
If I recall, last year I accidentally broke off a piece of my MoonFlower Vine that had seed pods, so as an experiment I thought I'd stick the vine in water to see if the seed pods would mature. During the process the Vines DID root in water.
This year I did not have great luck germinating all of my I. alba seeds either. But I did germinate and plant about 20 vines, including some from the Canary Islands.

Hi Ron, I am really admiring the link you posted with the yellow moonvine, it's simply gorgeous. Thanks for posting that link, has some really pretty morning glories wow!
I have the white evening glory, it closes up during the day and opens at night.
Kevin......I am in LOVE with the idea of letting it grow up a tree like the link you posted...that is beautiful!!!! I wish I could get hold of some Yellow & Blue Evening & morning glory vines mixture seeds to do as you did with the tree, then they're would be some open at night and day! Wouldn't that be pretty with Yellow, white and Blue growing up a tree? Ahhhhhhhhh, I'm in a dream world of my own now lol...but who wouldn't be after these pics :-))))
Thanks for posting all the pics on this forum, they're great!

"Ha! Ron, you are the best forum poster on this or any forum."...spare me...I know me and one of my favorite movie directors(Erich von Stroheim)share the same nickname...
http://www.movietreasures.com/main/Directors/Directors_2/directors_2.html
The vine 'knows' that it is going to put out a runner and the leaves are in that sense primarily 'pre-determined' to be different(form following function),but leaves can also change secondary to a 'regular' stem finding itself in a position to be more of a ground level runner...the leaves changing to suit the purposes of being a runner is not always 'absolute' and the leaf form may or may not be different from those of the main climbing stems...
