Wow Lisa, that's huge! I have a small (around 5 feet) one that I just put in the ground earlier this year. How old is yours?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Is that Borneo Giant or another? How cool!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Ackkkkk!!!!!!!!

You gonna do Christmas lights on that little guy?
You'd better start now cause I think you may just run out of ladder!

To say it's impressive.........is a gross understatement!
Kudos!
Ric

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Beautiful!!!
I love the ginger growing in front of it.
Which one is it????
Janet

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

That is so awesome!!

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Yee gads!!! that thing is monsterous but gorgeous!!! What a stunning display.

Mandeville, LA(Zone 9a)

Spectacular!!!!

San Jose, CA

That's gorgeous, but I must confess I have no idea what plant species we're talking about. Just call me a tropicals dunce.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I believe that is an Alocasia and I also think Lisa is enjoying her tease! LOL

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

hey yall, sorry, I was doing a recipe over in the recipe forum!

'chele, you have a pup from that one, that is one that I sent you via mystic when she came here!

indie, this one was here when we moved here 3 years ago, however it was small. They grow really fast here. I give it lots of water. It would be a lot more full of leaves if we had more rain this year, but it's been dry.

thank you Ric, I see it everyday and I think it is pretty impressive too! LOL.

Janet, the ginger right in front of it is variegated shell.

thank you water, mizm & nema..

lilystorm, nah, you're notta dunce, just seeing plants you haven't met yet!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Wow Lisa,

That is amazing, with ears like that, who needs trees?

Molly
:^)))

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL molly...

here Janet info on the ginger:http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2333/index.html

I believe the EE is Alocasia macrorrhiza

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

OMG!! Mama! LOL! I saw somewhere that you bought the borneo. I keep looking at it.

I do very much still have the ear you sent me and it has given me several more. Tag still says "upright from Lisa" too. I think of you whenever I see them. :)

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

don'tcha just love that??! I got a plant from Eclipse like 2 years ago and it is doing great here. Everytime I see it, it makes me smile 'cause I think of all my neat friends here.

For growth rate, you can take a look at this picture, taken in '03 and see how much it has grown. Keep in mind that the leaves do freeze back each year, not the trunk though.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Sorry, Lisa, I should've been more specific, I meant the one with the red bloom right up front. It is a ginger, right??

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

So Chele ............been holdin' out on me eh?

Shame-shame...LOL!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

lol Janet I was eyeing that ginger too. Lisa that is a awesome EE

Foley, AL

that looks like Persian Palm

ely

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ric! You have seen it 2-3 years in a row! Mine just isn't as big as hers. LOL Of course the offsets are even smaller.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

And I meant to say Ely, where the heck have you been hiding??

Foley, AL

I have been busy....... rooting, planting, "someone sent me a big box that I have been busy planting..." lazy.... LOL chele, what type of soil do you have that plant in?

ely

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Big boxes are good! We all need big boxes. :)

I'll have to post a pic of your baby tomorrow Lisa. She is growing but a mere baby compared to yours. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree Chele, I need a big box with that in it. I am going to get one. I might as well. Throw all sanity away. It is beautiful and it wants to come to California.

So Lisa, what is the name of that variegated plant, a small one on the left side just in front of the fence, halfway up the pic just behind the red flowered plant.
THANKS

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Absolutely gorgeous!!! Fabulous!!! Green, huge and lush!!!
And your not too bad either!!!
If TS,good see you,I'm sure he'd say the same thing!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You want an upright Kell? I can always squish the Heliconia over.... :)

I wondered about the variegated one too. Is it Hedychium or one of those Ti plants or? Oh, the world of tropicals! Why wasn't I born into a zone 9???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have the zone 9 but not the space. I need zone 9 in the boonies!!

You have an extra Alocasia Macrorhiza 'Borneo Giant' , Chele???

Do you know what the variegated plant is on this tropical island?? The lower right side with the long dangling leaves.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ABSOLUTELY-ENORMOUS-AROID-ALOCASIA-BORNEO-GIANT_W0QQitemZ7706136422QQcategoryZ25463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have the tropical disease suddenly and fatally! I was admiring my new Violet stem tonight and I just thought it was so elegant. Then I looked at my new this summer hummer bed and thought, I could rip all of that out. I am insane.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ha, you and me both kell, I have tons of tropical sights bookmarked, that eBay link you posted, bookmarked, I want to find room for that monster too. I also have their website bookmarked, one of my favorites. Every day when I go out to water that big eared one I posted elsewhere, the leaves are bigger than the day before. I bet I could sit out there and watch it grow. It wants to get in the ground and at this rate, I better find it a good spot real soon. Something will have to come out and make room for it.
I now have several lovely inspiring tropical books and scrapes of wish lists here and there. What a disease!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I was teasing you Chele...... I remember seeing it but as you said not like Lisa's.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

ok, here is duh 'whats duh what' of plantdom...

looking at the photo from back left
the red flowers you see in the upper corner are Clerodendrum 'Borneo Sunset'
Costus speciosus Variegatus
Alocasia
under the alocasia is
alpinia zerumbet 'variegata'
in front of that is
Curcuma Pride of Burma

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

very beautiful, very tropical.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh wow, that is huge!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I came back. Although pale in comparison, I am NOT embarassed by the size of my ears! LOL

I do not have the Borneo YET Kell. They are $20 away from me. LOL

Thumbnail by Badseed
Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

And a pic of another. Not as big as Lisa can grow them but I have to drag mine in and out! LOL

Thumbnail by Badseed
East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

pretty nice. On first pic, what is that beatiful purple plant? On 2nd pic, the tall plant, (darn it I can't think of the name, i know i'ts poisonous) was it grown from seed? Mine is only about 1.5 ft tall, grown from seed

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

The purple plant in front of the ear is just perilla. You have to make sure to cut all the flowers off or you will have a whole field of them!

In the second pic, I think you mean the castor beans? I start mine inside around March and they normally top ten feet in a season.

I take true joy in growing from seed and will try anything once! LOL Don't tell the plants we live in zone 6!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ohhh, now what is the official name of that ear? I may have it. And just look at that tall caster bean! Are you pinching the blooms to get it that tall?
I am guessing the purple plant is either a coleus or perilla.
Yep perilla, Chele and I are playing whos on first!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

thanks. and yes, castor bean. I thought everything was bigger in texas. Not my castor bean
I love marilla perilla, but I didn't "borrow" any from my neighbor this year

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

vossner, this is just the plain purple perilla I believe, http://www.plantnames.unimelb.edu.au/Sorting/Perilla_Gallery.html
not the Magilla Perilla. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/23803.html

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have never seen the just purple perilla.

And now I am more confused than my usual. Isn't that a ALOCASIA MACRORHIZA 'BORNEO GIANT' Chele that you are hiding behind?? You are such a pretty lady! You can't hide that!
