Something chewed the leaves off my phormiums (about 3 inches from the ground) and then left the leaves scattered around. I'm trying to figure out what type of animal would do this. I've had a lot of problems with squirrels, but this seems like too big of a job for a squirrel.
Any ideas?
I'm also quite surprised that the phormiums were singled out. Really, there are much tastier looking plants in the garden. (Maybe I should be crossing my fingers, lest there be more plants eaten tomorrow.)
What ate my phormiums?
I can't imagine what would have eaten them. They sure do not seem appetizing to me. I understand they will send out all new leaves if you cut them to the ground. The fancy ones can get dull with age and doing this brings on the more colorful new growth.
I love Phormiums myself and have quite a few. Which ones do you have? Do you have a good source?
Did you find out what did that?
I never found the culprit, but whatever it is also ate through a propane line. So, I guess appetizing isn't a high priority for this critter.
I cut the leaves down to 2 inches above the soil. Should I cut them all the way back to get them to sprout more leaves?
The ones I have are all Yellow Wave. The one in your picture is lovely. What is it?
It is Jester. I lucked out and found it at Lowes. Then I went back and they had sold out of them so fast. I wonder if they can order them.
I have to go look for Yellow Wave's picture. The other one I love is the Guardsman. It is so red.
I will go look for where I read on some you need to cut down some and see how far down they say. I would think 2 inches would be good.
Jester's leaves.
It looks like some new leaves are starting to grow, so 2 inches must be ok. I hope the leaves grow fast, though. It kind of left a blank hole in the landscape.
