Hello -
I'm on my second year of growing cucumbers in San Jose and could use some help/recommendations.
#1: Most productive varieties for San Jose. So far I've tried Japanese cucumbers, Armenian and "Spacemaster". Not overwhelmed with the production per plant on any of them, and Santa Clara County Master Gardener's website seems to agree. Their trial runs are several years old though, so I was wondering if any of you have new favorites. I'm not into the lemon cukes, thanks.
#2: Weird blight or something on first 4 Armenian cuke plants. I SHOULD have taken pictures. The leaves were small and a light green color. Plants not screamingly vigorous, and the older leaves leaves kept curling up and drying up, starting from the edges. I tried watering more often, and fertilizing, hoping that the plants could "out-grow" the problem. Never happened. Thought it was a problem with the variety, but 3 plants started a month later are going great guns, holding leaves, making cukes and behaving like normal curcubits. Suggestions?

cucumber advice
Try the Cool Breeze hybrids. They will grow in your cooler climate and they are excellent tasting, seedless, and small. I grow them in a 16" pot and plant twice a year in the summer. I have enough for 4 people out of that one pot using 4 or 5 cukes a day. I've had much better luck with them in the ground, but don't have the room any longer.
Suggestion - While the first batch is producing, plant seeds in the same spot for continuous yields. Works for me. Park's has them and so do a lot of other vendors.
