Morning Glorys 2005 # 9

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

New Thread . . . This one is for you, Dee . . .

How about this for a Tie Dye!
Two years ago this one just 'appeared' in my Tie Dyes,
so I started saving the seeds separately from the regular Tie Dyes,
and they continue to amaze me.
This year the blooms have a Brillant Shimmering Luster of Silky-Satin.
This bloom is almost Solid Pale Lilac
with Plum Streaks and Pale Pink and Lavender Halo at Throat.

Also have this same type Tie Dye in Pale Blue

Need help with JMG ID. . .
Gail, your 'Akathoukinoumi' on last Thread
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1668460
Looks like one of my new bloomers, purchased on eBay, as 'Fujimusume' -
which it is definitely NOT.
Do you think this looks like your 'Akathoukinoumi' ???
or anyone else that is growing this ???
The White Throat of my bloom doesn't seem to be as large as golgi's.

Emma, your blooms are always breath taking. Those tye dyes are just incredible.

Thanks Janis,
Hopefully I'll get lots of seeds.

I am having a new problem this year with my MG's.
MANY BLOOMS ARE NOT MAKING SEEDS,
that I normally get bunches from.
Anyone else having this problem ?

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

My lavender moonvines are the ONLY thing making seed. I have not seen a single seed pod anywhere else :(

Janis

My I. lindheimeri gave lots of flowers but so far only a couple seed capsules. The flowers seem to abort maybe because of the heat stress.

I was just wondering how soon the morning glories start making seeds and how do you find them and harvest them? How soon after the bloom falls off should they be there? Here is another photo of the one that might be Akathoukinoumi? I like it, but it is a little too much like the Heavenly Blue morning glories for me to get real excited about. Just bigger. Sure has vigorous foliage.

The seed capsule is roundish, and at first is green and with time as the seeds develop and mature, the capsule turns light brown and is thin, fragile and like paper. Take every care not to harvest the seed capsule too early; you can tell if the seeds are ready for harvest because they are dark colored, either jet black or tan. Harvesting too early will only result in an nonviable seed and much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the following spring when you try to grow them. Some of us did much wailing and gnashing following purchases of seeds on eBay from You Know Who with just these results.

As for how long after the flower drops off, I don't know, maybe another person can chime in here?

Joseph

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I've had my wilted blooms fall off sometimes the next day.
But usually it is 2 or 3 days.

I actually meant how long after the flower drops off can one expect the seed capsule to be visible...sorry for being obtuse here LOL.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

I know what you mean,Susan, but it IS more ruffled and has a larger white throat.
Emma,it is so hard to tell,as every camera captures blue differently. All I can say is the blue of Akathoukinoumi is similar to Heavenly Blue, but grayer. Flower is larger and more ruffled, white throat spread out into the bloom in a more rayed pattern.
Nikki, plant that blue silk! It looks great!

Will do, Gail
Thanks again so much!

WOW is this one different, at least for me. Pic is a bit fuzzy, but you can see it I think. Gonna go out and try to get another, but its in a spot that makes it rough.

There is a yellowish cast to the "star" and pink spots on it, very little ones. I love it :)

Janis,
Your White with Pink Streaks could be Shibori 'Pink'.
Let's see what others think.

Gail your photo comparison is amazing.
Unbelievable how much they resemble [at least to me]

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Emma, they look EXACTLY alike. Hatsu has a non -variegated leaf with a longer central lobe.

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

I've been having problems with my JMG's setting seed, but not the other species (purpurea, lindheimeri, lutea, etc.) I think it's just been too darned hot for the JMG's to set, since they seem to be the only ones affected here. The few I. nil that I have that aren't the 'classic' JMG have done better, so it's my guess that the ones from Japan are just probably more sensitive due to their breeding, but I could be wrong about that. I'm just hoping when the weather here in Texas starts to cool off a bit next month I'll see better results. I didn't have this kind of problem at all last year.

I haven't been keeping exact track of how long it takes the pods to mature on mine, but I know it's not a long time. I estimate mine take 4-6 weeks to mature, depending on the plant and how large the pods and seeds are.

HTH,

Stacey

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Stacey,
I too have been having problems with mine setting seeds as well. I started several more not long ago, so I'll see how they compare. It is so, disappointing to look at those vines with only a few seed pods, rather than all seed pods as I've always experienced.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

well ,my Hatsu Arashi's are setting seeds by the truckload. The others only just started blooming,so it's too early to tell.

Gail, what Beauties you have today - ALL OF THEM

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hi Everybody,
The pictures look great(!)

Janis - The bloom you have is one of the creamy-white variations with an unpigmented throat and some small speckles of pigmented color that the I.purpurea speckled strain can produce...This speckled strain will produce 'speckled' colors in the range of all the regular pigmented I.purpureas...in addition to the white form with the rosy colored throat...I also have a very light all blue that came out of the speckled where the entire throat and limb is the same exact light blue color and shows no star pattern whatsoever...

Gail - The flower comparison is a very interesting one,and is certainly 'thought provoking'...I am tending to think that the different leaf types would indicate somewhat different parentage, despite the remarkably similar color blooms...
The latest "Blue Silk" you just posted looks more like the lavender colored one you had posted earlier, but with an almost perfect 6 pointed white star in the central region...the outermost portion of the limb looks almost like a diluted 'turquoise' color...

Stacey - the seeds on my plants can take about 8 weeks to mature here in the zone I am in,especially pods that are maturing late in the season, but I've had some mature as fast as 5 weeks when their metabolism is running faster,as it can in the warmer zones...

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Excellent pic of Akathoukinoumi,my daughter's. Emma, this the exact color and form to compare yours to.
