DF was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago. He is now taking radiation so DH and I will be helping DB drive him to Regina for treatment. I prolly won't be checking in much.

Aww, Lily - our posts must have crossed.

So sorry to hear about the medical problem. I'll remember you all in my prayers.

Go with God . . .

~marilyn

Thanks for letting us see those beauties Pam. Praying this all works out for your Dad.

Which lovely rose is that?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Marilyn and Brenda.........Dad's 80 now so your thoughts and prayers will be very appreciated by him as he faces this battle (it's a lung cancer that radiation often takes care of). Otherwise his health is excellent (and they've certainly tested him enough). So we are thinking positively that he will beat this latest setback and I am praying the treatment doesn't have bad side effects for him.

Thanks re the pics ladies......i'm pretty pleased with how most turned out. Will have to catch Battiscombii when the flower is fresher and there is a grouping of them and try to take the hibiscus a little further back.

Brenda the rose is one I've posted before but it's color has faded with the heat. It's name is 'About Face.'

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Sorry to hear about your Dad Pam. I hope the treatment goes well for him.

Lovely flowers. Is the first one a canna? If so...which one? I really like the Pineapple Lily, the Oleander and the T. Battiscombii. They're very exotic looking. Your brug is very pretty too. Which one is it?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Luv your pictures, Pam! I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. Hugs and prayers are on there way to you! The rose is gorgeous! I also like the little flowers on your unknown succulent. Can you post a picture of the entire plant?
:) Donna

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Not like your dad hasn't had enough to deal with over the last few years. Will be praying for him. Our older treasures are pretty darn tuff; he'll handle this one too.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Sandy, Donna and Lynn. You're right Lynn.....their problems have taken a round out of me and he is taking it much more in stride.

Sandy the Canna is a bronzeleaf canna named 'Angele Martin'. Pretty but doesn't match the one in the PlantFiles. The brug is an Ecuador Pink cross (I think)........it has too much orange in it (other pics I've seen of EP's show a light pink to a dark dusky pink without any sign of the orange). It was one I got from Perrynguyen ( Flora Exotica ) this spring (I really love the colouring of it). Will show pics of Liz's when they bloom.

Will take a pic of the succulent later Donna......it sure doesn't look much like it did prior to the bloom stalk forming.

Missed B. Maya's pic http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/54865/

Should say Cristina from Plants of Perfection tracked down and found me the Oleander (an old plant that many aren't carrying anymore) and the T. Battiscombii.

Hey Lilypon! Girl, you sure have some beauties there. I am just amazed at all your tropicals growing and blooming WAY UP THERE.

So sorry about your dad...you take care of him and give him a big ole hug from me. I will keep all of you in my thoughts.

Thanks Ann and Connie. :) Connie Dad has always enjoyed reading the emails you've sent and looking at your wonderful garden....he will be tickled pink to get a long distance "big ole hug" from a southern lady! ;)

Should say he enjoys looking at everyone's pics here as well....usually has a story to tell me about some trip he's made to some of the places he's seen pictured here.

Yep Donna we are getting a nice assortment of Brugs here now. :)

Oh Pam Dear,

Have been thinking about you, getting DD ready for college with long drive ahead of you and now ..... found this thread today. Hold tight, think positively and be as cheerful as possible. Cheerfulness -even if you are crying inside - does spread. Very positive thoughts coming your way constantly.

Thanks Donna and Ginny........we've been working on the positive very hard here. DF's strength has always been that way and this is certainly one of those instances where those thoughts are a must.

Pam
Just hold on and read everything . The Clinics and people are increadable and the treatment is so much more specific than it used to be. I know as I just got my" do not return" notice from the Cross. They have wonderfull help and information through the whole process.
It sounds like your dad is like me...it's much easier to be the one in the process than have a loved one in it.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Ann

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you Ingird......I want soooooooo badly for them to get into their house and have some good years there. I'm leary of what to say but I pray your Dillon got better news than the initial report intimated.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with me Ann (and congratulations to you!!!! :). I sent you an email and I agree....not sure what Dad has been told but we are certainly in the dark (early on he asked me what I knew and all I could say was some got sick, others experinced tiredness and some had no reaction.......but I didn't know which one the people having lung radiation experienced). When I take Dad for his Tuesday treatment I'm going to make a point of grabbing every informational pamphlet they have.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. It's something I procrastinated about posting but thought others might have gone through this and could share some personal knowledge of the process. Our other family experiences was having DFIL die of prostate cancer in his early 50's so I really didn't want to base my answers to my father on that. Edited to say also my maternal grandmother but the paperwork got lost and she never heard that she had cancer until the clinic phoned her, a year later, to ask how she was doing without her kidney (that was still residing inside her). :(

Thank you for being here and a heartfelt (((hug))) to all of you! :)

Pam, not sure I want to get into this discussion at all, but here goes anyway. I had heard a few years back, when my Mom had breast cancer and took radiation, that when the aim is close to the digestive system, probably mostly the stomach?, those people suffer most often from the nausea and upchucking. My mom didn't get sick from it, just tender in the area, and tired. She was 70 at the time, and still OK now at 83.

Anne it is wonderful news for you. Thanks for telling us. We have heard wonderful things about the Cross clinic.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you Brenda.....it was one of your previous emails that gave me the information to tell Dad about the various reactions that could occur. All I knew was about the nausea since that was my DFIL's reaction to the radiation treatment. A couple of times I talked to Dad and he sounded right out of it (I think he had been resting prior to the phone call). Saw him this am and he was looking pretty good. I wasn't sure if the side effects increased after each treatment.

Not sure about some of the effects accumulating after radiation treatments, but the tiredness seems to build, with chemo or radiation. Here's hoping and praying it's all done before he notices any side effects, and then he can just keep getting better.

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

What was all that talk about my camera being so good? Ü

These pictures are just lovely Pam. The Pineapple Lily catches my eye, but then, they all do.

Please pass on my best wishes to your Dad.

Take care of yourself.

Some days I do better than others Joan. ;) Your camera however seems to pick up the most wonderful detail.

Thank you for your kind wishes......I'll be telling Dad he's got ladies rooting for him from across Canada and the States. Spent some time with him this afternoon.......while he sat much more than he usually does, he seemed to be in good spirits. :)

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Pam
I am still shopping for a camera so I hope I get one before the fall I would love to participate in the eye candy for the garden show!

There is accumulation in radiation, that is the job of the radiation. It is to interupt the body at its cellular level. Cancer cells get interupted along with good ones. The treatment is hopfully just long enough to stop the cancer and allow the good cells to still recover. It is such a delicate science but they are good at it.
I have been enjoying the ((hugs)) I have seen.

Thanks echoes for the kind words.
Pam please pass my (((hug))) for you around.
Ann
