V8, nice pic (as others you've posted).
Since you like shooting garden fauna have you ever seen stuff posted by monterey over in the hummers and butterflies forum? Some unbelievable macro shots on insects.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I have and I'm impressed with his photography too, he is Good!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I think pictures make tree frogs look like gummy frogs. Makes you want to suck their toes! ... haha rofl!
Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to the butterfly forum

looking at it again V8. very cool! But I don't know about sucking frog toes. However one night on duty in the Philippines I caught a big frog in the supply room. Decided I'd have a little home cooking since we had a microwave. One chop on the paper cutter had my legs ready. I then discovered you can't microwave frog legs. Wasn't very long before "Pop" "Pop". It was like dry shredded paper.

here's the first thread I took notice of monterey's pics and he (?) put a couple of mantis shots up at the end.

Wow, I love the Alien looking bug LOL...that is too cute. I want that camera! lol bet it's a pretty penny too

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Frog legs in the microwave rofl ... too funny!

Wow! I love Monterey's pics. Incredible closeups! I think he should trade that camera to me for a brug cutting :) ha!
Some Bugs are just so cute. The very first time I ever spotted a huge hornworm eating my datura I intended to squish him just the same as I had done the smaller ones before him. I walked up to him and he raised his little head and looked right at me. He was chewing and his little fat cheeks looked so cute that I just couldn't squish him. It was like a little puppy worm. I took him pot and all and set him way back in the woods.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Thats another cool critter. Photogenic too. Have you got any shots to post?
I never see more than 2 or three each year... of course back in the tomatoes somewhere and I just let them be. The maters are always 6'+ monsters and produce more than I can eat or give away anyway.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a few but they are babies. This is one of my favorites

looks like a gummy worm

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

YUCK! Those things are just nasty, I detest them...they leave their big ole' droppings as if a mouse had crawled up the leaf lol...and then they 'CHOMP'!!! But good pic Vicki

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I can't believe my luck. I just went outside to take a walk around the yard and look what I found for Julie!
This might be the little guy that hatched a couple of weeks ago. Now he is almost as long as my thumb. Look Julie his little tummy is full and he's taking a nap. Isn't he precious? ... rofl
He wuvs you :)

Starting to get his racing stripes too!
I'll have to look when I get home. I think I have one fair shot of an adult although not the macro quality.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Great frog/menu pic! I've got bunches of them here, screaming in the night. Hopefully they have the same menu!
My little Anoles/lizards eat caterpillers, but I don't think they could handle one the size of that!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Yep, you're lucky Vicki lol, I'm envious of your little hornworm lol! It's adorable, maybe he'll fine a moma and make some babies for you too. hehehe...He's probably tired cos' he found a moma to make babies with already!!!!! Ya think???? Keep me posted with updates LOLOL!

Hugs
Julie

Update: Do you want to see his first poop? :)

Blaine I'd love to see your picture. Don't worry about the quality.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Indulge us...please!! lol

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

The horn worm is pre-digital days. I'll locate the negatives and have them burnt to cd this weekend.

However when I was mowing this afternoon I almost ran over this guy in the grass. It's the first one I've seen in the back. I ran and grabbed the camera then picked him up and set him in the smokebush. He was gauging things for a jump to an internal trunk.
Now I really wish I'd either go back to my SLR fulltime or get a digital that I can get the same detail with.

Good shot Blaine, you're good with that digital ya got!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

before you go squishing those worms it could also make a Hummingbird Clearwing, they look similar. I just found out tonight when I saw this guy for the first time(doing the happy dance) and had to get some info on it.

Oh ... I think thats what I took a photo of the other night. Got 2 photos then my batteries went.

I stopped squishing all caterpillars great and small. Some of the pictures I've taken in the past are wormies long gone squished. Today when I look at their cute little faces in my pictures it makes me remember the green pile of goo they left on my foot. The little broken bones and the brain matter. The families that are missing their loved ones.

But seriously it really does bother me to look at pretty pictures of a caterpillar critter that I killed. I just can't make myself squish a caterpillar anymore. If it's something really gross I take his picture and then toss him as far as I can into my neighbors yard. (It's ok. He cut down the only big shade tree we shared as neighbors. I hope the caterpillars eat everything he's got. rofl!)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

You see Blaine? Insect photography is addictive. I love your mantid picture! Mantids are extremely alert and intelligent. When you start photographing them upclose they pose for you. They look you straight in the camera eye. Really cool critters and beneficial to brugs.
He is lucky to still be alive. I know how you men love to mow over everything in sight! ... hee!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Great picture Donna. I always love your pictures. You must have 10 billion by now?

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Donna I've noticed more of those this year. Good shots too.

V8 - we do get the rap for mowing-mania, don't we. :) I'm a bit atypical though. I hear there's a bet in the hood on when my final piece of grass will be gone. Pretty much down to a single path 24 - 36" wide around the house. I need more room for flowers, trees, bushes!! DW's part in it is grouching about the clematis that covers the lights in front of the garage or when she comes home and has to park in the street because I'm in the middle of the driveway and have all my gardening toys and the hose out!!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Blaine it's a good thing she loves you and puts up with your messes. If I was her I'd be thrilled that your hobby the yard and not car repair or sitting around all day scratching your butt and spitting .... hahahee! Your yard sounds beautiful!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

lol V

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

hmmm, maybe I'll let you bend her ear a bit for me.

Gorgeous morning and came across 3 different mantis on the hunt. Got my SLR out on a tripod and thought I'd have some worthy shots. Even though I have macro on that I was too close.

Hey not bad for your first shot! Looks like he's trying to figure out just what in the heck is in his face! ...lol! Real intelligent looking! :)

Keep 'em coming V!
