I got the cuttings from Nan for this. They were doing great in water but she told me they should root better in soil so I potted them. They were starting to root in the water after all. I made the mistake (I think it was a mistake) of setting the pot outside in a place I thought it would get indirect sunlight. Well, some of the leaves are now brown and curled up--so I brought it back inside. Will it be ok???? Bonnie
I think I goofed
Bonnie, I notice the any of the ones I root always get the curled up, brown leaves. a couple failed, but a couple others continue to grow, so I just removed the ugly stuff. I rooted mine directly into soil. I do keep cuttings in high shade area because of this, and still have curling/browing. I think you're doing the right thing bringing inside for some additional TLC. Maybe in Sept. you can gradually take out to a shady location and get it acclimated to the outdoors, if you are intending to use it as a seasonal patio plant. (will still have to be in shade, though.)
good luck.
I will have to try rooting in water.
Many of the tall Ctenanthes bend over when the top foliage gets heavy and they root, like a Walking Iris.
vossner--that's what I thought!! That is exactly what has happened though I couldn't say if it is because it got too much sun when I moved outside or from being potted. Well, I guess, if even one piece survives I will soon have a sufficient sized plant, eh?!! hehehe There ARE pieces that look fine still so I an very hopeful of the cuttings as a whole surviving this!! I had them in water from the time I got them until I could buy soil--at least a week maybe 2 and the one piece when I took it out to pot it looked like it had started to root (little white things on the side of it)!! Definitely worth trying again!! Bonnie
Vossner, what plant family is your main heart's delight??
kell, I'm just as fickle as my butterflies but I keep up w/ brugs, DLs, tropicals, bulbs, trees, roses. I think I love them all!
You are like me. I flit but have serious desires. LOL
yes, I noticed...
LOL
you have a private msg
i know this plant as "dinosaur tracks"....
All, if these are part of the ginger fam. can't they be propagated by dividing rhizomes? That's how I've done my gingers, but not sure about these varieties.
cnswift, love your ginger. If you ever have some cuttings/divisions to spare I would love some!!
I have to ressurect this old thread. I just bought this plant. I already have one planted in sun. Its only doing so-so. I was hoping the new one would be stronger. It had two tags - Peacock Plant & California Ginger. One said full sun (reason I bought it). The other said shade. Gotta love Lowes! I want to put it outside. Anyone in Florida growing successfully?
HI...these grow like weeds here for me. They will grow in the sun but grow so much happier in the shade. They are easily propagated by cutting the "fan" or the "goose foot" off the stalk and sticking it in the ground/pot. There are a number of different variegations... even some fragrant kind.
I was glad to see this thread. I got one of these on sale at Lowe's last fall and it was tagged "Peacock Plant", and the pot said "Tropical Foliage" as mentioned above. Never was sure what to do with it. I've had it by a window in my office and have been struggling to get the watering right. Having said that, it has survived in less than great conditions. It's a bit leggy, but still very attractive.
