Learning how to cross pollinate- Brug breeding 101

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Now that would have been a real thrill, Mary!! Shucks. A day late and a dollar short. My usual.

You know Blaine, I was thinking it also might have to do with the age of the pod. Those things hold on for dear life once they get going. I have to cut the peduncle off even after they are all dried up. They are so stringy! The other thing, if the time is close, you can pick it and quick pot them up. I have good luck with white seeds lately! And with your green thumb I would not be surpised if you do it with no problem.

Okey-doke! Guess I'll break out the sphagnum and cling wrap and start a test on one of the scrubs tonight. I tried one on a shiffelera in the basement this winter, even rewounding and wrapping a second time. Nothing for months. I cut it off and jammed it in a pot out of disgust expecting it to wilt and die a just death. Little goof rooted in spite of me and now I've got something else I need to find a home for.. .

I have a schefflera I put outside for the winter years and years ago, a way to get rid of it without an overt act on my part. That thing is still alive out there. And thriving I might add, it is huge. And I have never even repotted it!!

Blaine, a friend of mine who is a brug expert told me to just put the wet moss on around the trunk, no need to cut the trunk, and wrap with silver foil. It is great, it crinkles up tight so it is easy. He said the heat from the silver foil got it to root fast. He lived in Florida. I did this 2 years ago on a lot of brugs and it worked fast. I can't remember now if I used the plastic wrap first, iI do not think so.

Let us know which ever way you do it, how it works for you!

I'll try both. Since they root so easily from lenticels anyway I didn't figure I needed to wound and dust with hormone.
I'll wrap wet sphagnum, cling wrap to seal the moisture then cover one with aluminum foil and one some brown yard bag paper to keep the sun from steaming it.

With the plastic first, I can open the outter shield and be able to see any roots. I'll take pics and post the process, success or failure in 2 weeks. I'd think if it was going to work, it'll already have roots curling under the plastic by then.
