Oh No! Brugmansia addiction watch out!

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh gee Carol....pick me up on the way!!!! Wouldn't that be fun!
Mange takker!

Karen (sorry, Norwegian was the best I could do! :~D)

BOO!

Karrie left the gate open and I followed Carol over here!

The days are already getting shorter and I feel I need a new challenge for the winter and 2006. Wrapping up my first season of brugs there's really not that many different varieties just lots of different names. Hoyas are looking might fine.

So Karrie, have you found any in local nurseries and are they held inside as house plants?

blaine

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

They're definitely houseplants for me, Blaine....zone 4!

But...many of them are outdoors right now.
They'll be returning indoors soon, unfortunately....dang...it's already August...how'd that happen! lol!

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

I might have joined in late, but not too late to go to visit Sweden!! I work hard I deserve a nice vacation! Nan, I feel the same way down here in Minneapolis, I'm starting to clear out a room for my hoyas too!

Blaine, I haven't seen any around here - I may end up having to order mine over the internet. Glad to see you here! :-)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Well... I already jumped and ordered three from mail order. I was surprised where I ended up but confident since I know the grower has the proverbial green thumb besides being a wonderul person.

Now I have to study up and find out all the weird and exotic things recommended to grow them thats not actually necessary. :)
Jumped on the variegated and a couple with red in the leaves I think

Stephanotis floribunda variega
Hoya obscura
Hoya dimorpha

Aberdeen, NC

You will like the H. obscura. It is one of my favorites!! The fragrance is wonderful and it is a good bloomer. The leaves take on a red hue when they are in high light.

Thanks Karen! Now you know I'll be coming to you if it's resisting arrest. :)

Too bad you're in North Kakalake. I bet you got piles of something I'd like to haul off. (gg)
Blaine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Too much!!!

Blaine...your variegated Stephanotis wants to be WARM...not bright light but probably bright for you!!! LOTS of water...humidity. No direct sun (not a problema in winter, right?).

The H. dimorpha is an easy going nice glossy green leafed, yellow flowering hoya. Undemanding...lovely foliage.

H. obscura would love to live above the kitchen sink...bathroom sink...if there is enough natural light....but indirect. They like the humidit y from the running water!!! H. obscura (dark) gets its' name from the red tinge the leaves get in bright light...one of my faves....

Holy Cow, Holy Cow, Holy Cow!!!

I don't know if Nan has ever posted pics but if not, she's holding out you guys.
I drove up there with some brugs yesterday. What an amazing piece of country.

HOYAS!! Of course I didn't take my camera and it was just before dark when I got there. You should see her Hoyas on the summer vacation outside. Hanging from limbs in the apple trees and Running way up into the trees.. Already! She has some beeeeutiful tropicals all around and inside the house.

I hope I've convinced her to put some pics up.
Oh, and she said this variegated hoya wanted to come home with me too. Ain't that sweet? I'll post a pic later today for a possible I.D.

Priest River, ID

Karrie,If you are looking in Spokane for Hoyas you need to look at both Lows for EA shipments...There is a greenhouse heading north on 2 past the Y that also had a few......wish I could remember the name....(That after 50 thing going on) SANDY

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

SO KEWL you and Nan got together, Blaine.

(Hey...I think we hooked another one!!! Blaine sounds like he is smitten)

Karrie...you and Sandy should get together...she has some hoya stories....OY!

Blaine,
You're in trouble now...hoya addiction is starting!! It starts off slowly and before you know what has happened, your collection has grown, and grown, and grown....... There is always a need for one more!! LOL

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Sounds like it's entirely possible Karen... except you have to bring them inside which will limit my collection. How do they do in the office? Gears have been spinning the last couple of days. ;)

Don't you have some furniture you've been wanting to get rid of anyway......? ;-)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I pick my fights and when it comes to the great indoors I'll generally avoid getting the DW started. Once the DS had left and I remodeled his room then took it over last winter with brugs and stuff, I did a lot of sneaking around the house and staying out of the way.

Now kid #4 is leaving the house (college next weekend). She thinks that will still be her bedroom for 4 years. I'm thinking November will probably be an overhaul and it will be a new winter plant room. It's got west windows! She can visit on holidays and it'll be void of plants in the summer so she can sleep there while working. :)

Aberdeen, NC

Funny you should mention getting rid of furniture!! LOL I have been thinking lately about how I am going to get all my plants inside. I think I will probably really convert my living room to a greenhouse. Last year it was about half greenhouse!!! LOL

I haven't tried any hoyas in my office. I enjoy my hoyas to much to subject them to the dry conditions there!! LOL
Instead what I have done is bring in plants that I enjoy but know will tolerate the conditions. My office has a greenhouse look to it too!! LOL

A spinning head is a REALLY BAD SIGN !!! Watch out!

LOL

lol!! Goodbye kid, hello Hoyas!! (Poor kid!)

We all did enjoy a great visit with Blaine and really wished he could have stayed longer!
It was truly our pleasure meeting you, Blaine!

Well, my hoyas aren't 'all that', really, most of them are quite small, but being outdoors is working on that!
It was a Cissus that's climbing up through the tree branches, but a couple of the hoyas have tried, (lol!).....I try to untwine them and bring them back down to earth since they'll have to come indoors soon!

I did take a few photos of that Cissus, Blaine...I haven't uploaded them yet, so don't know how they turned out....we'll see!
Had the perfect lighting in the afternoon then couldn't find the memory card so I couldn't!

I forgot to show Blaine my Grandma's hoya....that's the pride and joy of my hoyas....and I didn't show him...can you believe it!
Then again, my house was such a ridiculous mess, (I am soooo ashamed!) and he'd already seen part of it, so it's just as well he didn't see that room!

I'll have to try for a photo of that one, maybe have Cheyanna stand by it.

Blaine's humbling himself...you should see the Maya he brought me!! I couldn't even believe it when he hoisted it out of the truck!
He had posted photos, but I couldn't tell the size of the plant...I was thinking 6, maybe 8" pot.....what is that one, Blaine....14, 16"?? And about 4' or so tall and nearly as wide!

Really a beauty....and I *still* can't believe it's MINE!!

He also brought a beautiful Peaches & Cream (also in a big pot!) and a couple others whose names have escaped me.

If you can grow Brugs like *that*, Blaine....I'd love to see the end result of any hoyas you start growing!

I'd best get to work...will work on uploading those photos later!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Don't believe her - I loved the family, house, property.. the whole nine yards!!
I was a little surprised myself when I went to put that Maya in the truck. It just fit between the toolboxes and under the rack, so yeah, probably 3.5' x 3'. I wish I'd had a BIG box or something to set over it so no wind would get in. I'm glad to hear she went ahead and bloomed. I half expected her to immediately drop all those buds in a huff.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Nope, Blaine...she only dropped ONE!

Just realized that we've been posting on Karrie's thread, and she's going through a rough time right now.....

Let's send good thoughts her way!
