I have been cruising around on this forum looking at all these absolutely beautiful pictures!
I think my brugmansias are going to get jealous because I might be adding these to my list of "must haves" and have found a new passion!
Are most Hoyas fragrant? Can people up North, like I, have them indoors as houseplants in the winter, and put them outside during the summer? I'd love to add some of these to my front tropical porch.
Edited to say: some of these blooms look like fancy candies that you could eat!

Yes, people up north, like you (and me) and even further north, can and do have them indoors as houseplants in the winter and put them outside during the summer.
Keep looking at the lovely flowers Karrie, its just a harmless little addiction ... lol. I only have 33 varieties myself, others have many many more.

Karrie, as your neighbor 2hrs to the North, let me tell you it can happen. A year ago, I was drawn into the magic of Brugs. Now expecting my own first time Brug quadruplets any day now. But then I started watching this Forum, and Lo and Behold, I am now the mother of 6 beautiful Hoyas over the past 3 months. So yes, it can happen!!!

He's probably tired of buying me garden and plant stuff, but hey, I buy him fishing stuff, and I just bought him a pair of new swim trunks the other day because, well, that would be too much information if I told you. lol.
I'm hoping he gets them. He usually does. And I don't ask for alot. I asked for two small things. One of them was a Hoya.

Karrie, you are going to love growing Hoyas in the winter time. When most tropical plants are at their worst in the winter, Hoyas stay nice and healthy with just a little TLC. They really help light up those dreary winter days. Enjoy!
Karrie you do need to watch out for Carol, I joke with her and call her a "hoya pimp". She will definately get you "addicted".

I really get an emotional kick out of watching folks get enthusiastic about hoyas...any plant for that matter. People who formerly could care less....are suddenly exuberant, interested, caring for something (read someone) else... Hoyas are fun because they are so diverse and react very differently to different environments and are never what we think they are (or should be...)...

Hi Karrie! I live in CA and my hoyas live indoors all year round. And thanks to all the above ladies, my house AND office are filled with them! (you and I are opposites......I have recently been bitten by the brug-bug.....I have 3 plants.....and seed for another! Ha!)

Im from Sweden.......very north in Sweden...and a big hoyafan.
My friends think i should be locked in ...all i talk about is my hoyas, how they grow and how the flowers will look like....
I have 111 hoyas, as i write..ha ha, and when ive got the one that is on my musthavelist, then i musthave another....
Now there are two hoyas on my list, cv Optimistic and a Kerri splash ?? i read about somewere...

I'm a 'keeper' of both Brugs and Hoyas, too, and as Mel stated above, Hoyas are great houseplants in the winter, where Brugs are either dormant or spider-mite-ridden!! (Well...for me, they are!)
Brug foliage is lovely during the summer, but Hoya foliage beats it hands down, maintaining it's beauty throught the winter!
There's also a lot more diversity in the foliage of Hoyas -vs- Brugs.
lol! Can you tell I'm more interested in foliage than in flowers?
Good luck beating those addictions....I haven't figured out how yet....and don't mind if I ever do!
I had the worst problem with aphids on my Brugs last winter. As soon as I got them back outside they did much better. I can see one of my Creamsickles has spider mites, so I'm going to get armoured here after I build up the energy and put myself into attack mode with some Neem. I just haven't had the gumption the last couple of days. It's been kinda rough around here.
Karrie....I have both addictions too. I find Hoyas W A Y easier to grow and care for...not so plagued by pests, very tolerant of neglect and very forgiving and not always screaming "FEED ME". Take up less room, too!!!

Hi, Karrie. It is very easy to get bitten by the hoya bug or any kind of plant bug. I can't believe the number of different hoyas there are and the variety that so many have. It is definitely easier to find different hoyas in the U.S. than here in Canada. My hoya bug problem was all Christine's fault! I still can't believe the number of hoyas that Maria has. I think Christine was the lucky one to get some cuttings from her.

I have to many of them going on right now and just added two brugs to my collection of plants. I knew I shouldn't have stopped by that nursery on my lunch break!! LOL It is easy to rationalize buying plants over food for lunch. Good for my diet.

Karrie look out. Once you get the first Hoya. thats it!!! You will be on Hoya hunts at every nursery in town. Then it hits really hard....and next thing you know....your ordering off the net....yes Its a Hoya High...

Well, let's see... Maria lives all the way up in the northern Sweden and I'm almost at the very south tip of this long country. I have the same distance to Maria as I do to Italy. Maria has the midnight sun during the summer and almost completely dark in the winter, but I have "normal" days/nights. Maria has all the moskitios (and one other bug similar but smaller and more "bity") during the summer/fall and I don't... Maria lives closer to Botanova than I do since they are also in the north. I'm closer to Anders Kastberg and he has lots of hoyas and orchids. I have two spare beds and two couches.
I have 110+ hoyas and Maria about the same. I've collected mine since 1998, but for Maria it has only taken a couple of years. Maria, correct me if I'm wrong!
So, now you know what to expect! You're all welcome any time, but I would need about one weeks notice.
