The Hosta Border

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Took a few shots of the hosta border yesterday. Another week or two and they will be in full flower. Front row left to right...So Sweet, Gyspy Girl, a self-seeded Campanula (gotta go), Golden Tiara. Back row Wide Brim, Halcyon and sieboldiana 'Elegans'

Another part of the border. Gold Edger, Purple Dwarf, then back into So Sweet and Gypsy Girl

The entire border. The previous pics were taken at the far end. Nearer to me are another Gold Edger, then Antioch (white-edged), Francis Williams, a hidden Blue Cadet under Francis, Sun Power (yellow), Cherry Berry, Krossa Regal thenyou can see the Golden Tiara about half-way up the border.

Beautiful Todd...very healthy lush growth.
This is my hosta garden. My neighbour has some pine trees and he just gave me some frsh raked needles for the path.

Cheers,

Lovely pictures - both Todd and Carol.
I really like the path - looks really inviting.

Thanks ViolaAnn,
I feel like a tiny bit of woods when I walk through the garden.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Those pine needles make for very clean pathways Carol....it does indeed look like a bit of the woods brought home to your garden.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

I have some tiny tiny ones. Aura, Little Pearl and Pandoras Box. Really must get my camera going again. I want some more .
Your photos are lovely, Todd and Carol.

City sprayed for mozzies last night. I have to wash off my milkweed and put back my monarch caterpillars. I brought them inside last night.
Inanda

Todd, that's a very creative and beautiful border you've created with hostas.

Carol, they're beautiful and sure have grown since I saw them! How is the rest of your lovely Secret Garden growing?

I broke down and bought three hostas this year to fill a little corner that my A/C unit and dwarf lilac hides from the sun. They're just babies and didn't grow much this year, but two have bloomed already. I say "broke down", because I had a bad experience with hostas before I knew anything about gardening and thought they were just invasive nuisances and messy. Between DG and a friend who has roughly 50 varieties of hosta, I've come around...

Christine

You really have the eye for placing them Todd. They are mixed together so nicely. Makes me want to rethink how I've been placing mine.

Love your Hostas, Todd. The scene can only be described as lovely and lush. Your path is so fanciful, Carol. I'd love to sit in that big chair and relax in it today. It's one of those ones!!!! :(

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Oldflowergirl,
I just came from sitting in that chair with a glass of wine in hand. Had to relax after a trying day at work.

Christine..which hostas did you choose? How is that Red hibicus doing? The Oritntal lilies are in bloom and are the stars of the garden right now. Their fragrance is wonderful.

Inanda..thanks..my hostas have really grown this year., and filled in the space beautifully.

Todd..I am lucky to have a neighbour who has the right kind of trees. I love to put down his fresh needles.

Thanks to all for your kind comments.
Cheers,
Carol

Carol, the Hostas I have are : Hosta tardiana "Halcyon"; Hosta Cherry Berry and the other one is hiding on me, but its has a small narrow leaf and is variegated. Its the one that hasn't bloomed, but I planted it only about a month ago. The Red Hot Hibiscus is growing and blooming like gangbusters, as are the others I bought that day at Jensen's. What a great place that is!

But back to Todd's beautiful hosta border, it looks like it would get quite a bit of sun there. I had always thought hostas needed to be completely sheltered from sun; that's why I planted mine where no sun can go. But I'm seeing them everywhere, even in completely full sun and they're growing just fine. Are they just one of those plants that will do fine no matter where you plant it?

Paris, ON(Zone 5b)

Very nice pics guys! I am new around here (as if you didn't notice!~) and I wasn't sure that there were any hosta addicts around here~lol!

I am in the midst of transplanting/planting/arranging my hosta bed right now. My wonderful husband expanded the garden to further my habit. I will post pics in the next few days for you all to see.

Ceedub-I think you will find that some hostas *prefer* shade, some are too tender and will burn in the sun, but I have friends who swear that hostas will do well anywhere with lots and lots and lots of water.

Todd, your garden looks very mature and filled in. Have you had it in this spot for a while? Your hostas look like they are very full!
I have some which were given to me when a friend split hers and they are coming nicely but not as full . I am looking forward to seeing them in their glory like yours.
Carol , I too love your needle path. The needles look very long so they look like they lay flat nicely.

Welcome, MnK. Nice to hear from you. Can't wait until you post pictures of your newly expanded garden! :)

My daughter attended University at Kingston-Waterloo in 1992-93 for her first year of Science (Pre-Optometry) Had to drive down and pick her up after her first year...too homesick. Today, she is a Physiotherapist and ownes her own clinic in Summerland, BC. Go figure!

Lovely Hostas Todd and Carol. :)

MnK, welcome to the Canadian Gardening forum. I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures too.

And yes, I agree, water seems to be the key to getting some plants past that "sun thing". I have some happy coleus where they get no shade and I drown them every day.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Lovely green Hostas.

I think you are right about the water thing and coleus. Mine are in mostly shade, get fed, but not lots of water, and almost the same size as I bought them 2 months ago.

Sorry MnK....welcome aboard and we do love to see pics! Ü

Many of the new and very colorful coleus require a lot of sun to develop full color. As always Todd your borders are beautiful (great looking lawn too)

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

My Hosta border gets late afternoon sun...it is on the north side of the house. As a rule, hostas with yellow leaves want a fair amount if not full sun to develop the yellow colours. Yellow-variegated can also take a lot of sun. Next come the white variegated, green and finally the blues, which develop the best colour in near full shade. All can take full sun if kept moist enough. I have them scattered around the garden, but the main concentration is along the north border.

I've been gardening here for over 20 years so the garden is quite mature...yet I keep adding more with no room! It's a sickness! LOL!

Inanda, I've seen Pandora's Box...quite a gem! My smallest is Hosta 'Collector's Choice'; its leaves are thumbnail-sized! Here is a 8 year old specimen.

In my windmill bed (full sun) I have the yellow ones that prefer more sun...on the left is Janet and the right is June (the Siberian iris is Sparkling Rose... the pic was taken about 2 weeks ago)

Your gardens sure are full Todd, and looking so good. I have that same windmill. The wonderful praire wind wore it out in one summer and the top went flying off on it's own.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Only one of mine has been unhappy in the sun. Something Ghost or?? Can't remember the name without going to look at the label. Moved some of mine into more shade this week. Will have to keep my eye out for Collectors Choice. Really like the tiny ones, hiding under other goodies. Am glad to see yours Todd. Gives me hope that my tinies will grow. Mine are only 2 years old. Was not at all sure they would come back this year - but they did.
Does anyone have troubles with Fire & Ice? I've tried it twice and lost it twice. Really like Queen Josephine. Very upright and great substance.

I keep dividing my sibs to give bits to others. Really have to stop and let them grow into decent clumps like yours. What is your shorter sib to left of Sparkling Rose, Todd?

Inanda

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

The sib to the right is Butter and Sugar.

The only one I have had troubles with in sun is Francis Williams which is now in bright shade and doing much better. I've only ever lost one Hosta...Hosta montana 'Aureovariegata'. Had it for 5 years and each year just a single crown that kept getting smaller and smaller until it disappeared this year.

Fire and Ice does fine for me. Here is my 4 year old.

Gosh, that would make a gorgeous framed picture. Lovely plant, Todd.
