Do you know any online source for African violets.

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have been checking out Lowes and HD here for AV, but they aren't too healthy looking lately. Does any one know a really good source online for AF? I been looking at Ebay also ,but I am not to familiar with any of the sellers there. TIA

check out the strep sources here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/523736/ - they also have good violets. Rob's, Lyndon Lyon. Belisle is another. Can't think of the others right now.

I recently found The Violet Gallery (thanks, BlueKat76!). [HYPERLINK@www.violetgallery.com]

I got a shipment from Rob's this spring, and it was fantastic! See my thread about it, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/507431/

Don't do it Patti. Do NOT open that window. lolol :)

I have purchased AV's and other gesneriads from Rob's Violet Barn, Bluebird Violets, Lyndon Lyon, The Violet Gallery. Here are my comments about each:

Rob's: Excellent, healthy plants. They pack very well and usually only a few leaves are broken off (which I plant anyway :)). The plants are on the small side though. I have also ordered a number of hoyas from Rob's. I have always been pleased with his plants. Over the past 10 years, probably placed at least 10 orders from him. I also bought directly from Rob at a show/sale I attended.

Bluebird Violets: Excellent, healthy plants. The plants are huge! I have also ordered a lot of leaves from Bluebird. The packing is great and I always receive bonus plants/leaves. The last time I ordered (this past spring), I believe I received 1 free plant and 4 different free leaves. Wonderful! A few years back I placed an order and received my plants, all healthy and great. Then, I received an e-mail notifying me that the name of one of the plants was incorrect and wanted to let me know. Excellent customer service.

Lyndon Lyon: I had the pleasure to buy the plants directly from Paul at a show/sale I attended in North Carolina. Huge, full plants. Very healthy. I've never ordered through their website, so I don't know what shipping is like. He was very friendly, although I wondered if he thought I was a crazy lady buying as many plants as I did!

The Violet Gallery: I also bought in-person from them. Nice-size, healthy plants.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

I love that picture, Suzanne! Your plants look so lush & healthy! From 3 to 18 to... ?? Well, I guess we know you're aiming for 100+ new little plants for wedding favors.... :-)

The standards that Rob's sent me were indeed much smaller than the lovely plants that BlueKat76 picked up for me from The Violet Gallery, but as PlantMom said, Rob's did do an A-1 packing job.

Thanks Critterologist for the info.

Susanne,
You know I love my Epi's, but they get pretty big. Now I am getting the AV bug.
Now I have to explain this one to my hubby. LOL.

Tell him most are gonna be freebies...I mean after all you just need a few leaves....lol
That alwasy works for my DH.

MsC

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Unfortunately, my DH has taken to mentally tallying the cost of the pots! LOL. He says it's a vicious cycle... first, I have some new AVs, and so I need to pick up a couple more pots... then, I find pots that I like and end up with an extra one or two... I can't have an empty AV pot, of course, so then I "need" another plant!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL, tell him it's like :
biscuits and gravy you know they never seem to come out even or beer & football...lol

Food is usually something men can relate to.;)

MsC

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Lol!Thats funny critter that he keeps mental tabs on you. It is a vicious cycle! We can't be having empty pots now.... I'm going to keep telling my fiance that they're only for the wedding...maybe he'll believe that for long enough that I can keep going :) So far he's gone with me to Lowe's and HD twice and hasn't dragged me out yet. "It's for the wedding honey!" lol
Lol Ms C, or hotdogs and buns!

I would love a mini. I don't have any. I would also enjoy a trailer. I just received sticky wicket from Rob's along with pretty miss kelly, raspberry rampage, and ma's debutante. I also have optimara Mississippi, EverSpecial, and Maine; and a "looks like" optimara Harlequin, and Michigan. Glad to share any or all.

The 4 from Violet Barn are small. We'll wait and see what spring brings.
