Made for the shade

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Hi Mike,
I have tried to collect seeds and never had any luck. I had some rooted cuttings think that I have promised all of them. I won't know how many I have until I get everything out of the GH for the Summer. I can root one for you if you would like.

Betty,

Did you get the plant from your Grandmother or just the name of it? If the former, how nice to have a plant or offshoot grown by her! I have a some phlox and a few other things I dug from my Grandmother's garden before she passed. I cherish them every Spring when they faithfully return.

Both the name and the plant. I have so many that came from my grandmothers and even great grandmother. I have a wonderful begonia from my Grandmother, Some Tiger Lilys from great grand mother and more things than I can remember. Really makes them special.

I know that it's late here, but I wanted to tell you that I have tried to grow Asarum here and it absolutely hates any sun at all. It has yet to really move and has been in the ground three years. Tiarella is wonderful and is blooming right now. I've just redone a garden with the moist conditions you are talking about. I used Astilbe basically as ground cover. Some of them come very short like 10". Also ligularia/farfugium, hosta, ferns, Japanese Forest Grass, ajuga, polygonatum, and mondo grass. All are happy in full shade and most are willing to grow in some sun. Although in our zone it's always a chance to see what will really stand the heat. Japanese Forest Grass definitely will and ajuga, mondo grass grow in full sun here. The rest need some afternoon shade.

Also Peris, there is an evergreen climbing hydrangea with a white bloom that would look great on the fence (but only down to zone 9) . It will go from virtually no sun to part sun as long as it's protected in the afternoon. It is a slow grower however. Distictis Buccinatoria is another vine that will grow in the shade but won't bloom unless there is sun. Also, Passion Flower. (but only down to zone 9)
