How colorful! Great job.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thank you. This was a few weeks ago totally different look today.

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

I've never heard of a Justicia. It's beautiful! I'm off to do some research.

Is there another name or spelling for it? I can't seem to find it.

Pins...This is another of the Heirlooms from my Grandmothers garden. She called it "Brazilian Plume Plant" or "Justicia" I think this is Justicia carnea.
It is really a beautiful shade plant. Too cold in TN to leave outside over winter. Should do well in GA

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

pic., Very pretty combination! Will look up Justica, too. I suppose I could store it in my garage in winter...it's too pretty and interesting not to try! thanks for posting. t.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

T...It winters well in the basement or greenhouse. I cut back in the fall and usually root the cuttings. It roots quickly in water. Let me know if you don't find it. I should have extras. Mine is setting buds and should bloom again in a week or so.

Granbury, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay this is the only name I can find that is close to this plant. Can you tell me where to find the plant? (Justicia ovata)

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Tanarae1...From my Grandmother. Oh Well, that won't work She had been gone for a long, long time.
I am rooting some. I'll put your name on one if you like. I could also send you a cutting and you can root it yourself. It roots quickly in water. Let me know.

Just finding this thread. Love the picture and would love to find Justicia. I'll take a look at the link above and then start searching.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Hi Linda,

I have a small Justicia that is well rooted that I would be glad to send to you. It should bloom this summer. Too cold to ship, but I can put your name on it.

picabo, I just love your name. I read it as Peek a Boo. Don't know if that is correct or not. Is it your real name or does it stand for something?

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thank You

Eight years ago when Picabo Street was skiing in the Olympics I bought a new puppy. I brought her home and set her on the floor to play with my little Maltese. They played for about 15 minutes before DH realized that there was a new puppy in the house. He was sooooo busy watching the Olympics and Picabo Street on TV. She is my constant companion. Here is the real Picabo in my life. LOL

What a cutie! Love that smile!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

I got a little chuckle from your question. One of my cats is named "Pins".

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh thanks Betty, that would be great. What would you like in return?

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

That is so funny!! :-)

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Betty, I love your Justicia. I planted one this last fall and can hardly wait for it to bloom. I believe mine is a white. Yours looks very pretty paired with the Hydrangea.

Picabo is such a cutie!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thank You, "Picabo" is asleep in my lap while I type. She is never far away.

Does anyone have any suggestions for two kinds of shade? On the front porch, we have a Spanish column that stops any sun going any further. Our neighbors are watering a tropical-type garden over on their side so the whole area is moist. I have planted a mountain mahogany. Now I am looking for smaller perennials to surround the mahogany.

On the north side of the house, we have four areas. Two are partial shade and two are total shade.

I have studied a little on a Spring Planting catalog. The resuts were arisaema tryphylla and gallium odoratum for the moist side. For the north of the house, I have found listings on asarum canadense, hesperis matronalis, smilacina racemosa and tiarella wherryii. If anyone has any experience with one of these plants (pro or con), I would appreciate it. If anyone has any knowledge of other plants that would work also, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Chuck

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

Chuck - Can you post a pic of the area so we can get a better idea?

I have gallium and hesperis and love both. The gallium smells wonderful when I accidently step on it - smells kind of like fresh hay.

Polemonium might work well there - Bressingham Purple would be lovely with the gallium.

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Dear sstateham,

I haven't forgotten you but it rained here over the weekend so I couldn't take a decent photo. Then the last couple of days, my whole household had a 'bug'. I will try to get the photos tomorrow.

Thanks,

Chuck

Rockford, IL(Zone 4b)

no problem- hope you're feeling better :)

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

This is just a test to see if I haven't gotten the image size too large. This is the north side of our house. During summer, the two beds to the right get about two to four hours of sunlight...

This is looking towards the other side of the last photo....Notice the two big obstacles: In the first photo, the air conditioner compressor. In this one, the dryer outlet.

This is a photo of the front of our house in late afternoon. The column in the right center was the one that I mentioned in an earlier email. It pretty well takes most of the sun on the front...

This is at the right side of the column...It is my attempt to take some of the water away from the Mountain Mohogany shrub that I planted.

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

This is a glimpse behind the column...While there are plants already in these places, I would like to replace them with butterfly or hummingbird attracting plants. Sorry if I messed up...I am now going to restart my computer and sign back on so I can double check the success of the photos...Thanks for bearing with me!!

The plants that are planted in these photos are for the most part temporary. The five columbines next to the fence will stay and the mountain mahogany I planted I am going to try to keep. If anybody has any suggestions on shade loving plants to add (especially if they attract butterflies or hummers), I would appreciate hearing of them.

Thanks,

Chuck

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

Hummers love impatients! If you get the reseeding kind they come back year after year.

Just found this thread, the real little Picabo is a darling!

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes,the picobo,is a darlin ,picobo looks a lot like the poor little dog my step daughter, found and recesitated. That poor thing had a terible fear of men,and I can only wonder why .The real skier,Picibo,I have heard ,has become a nurse and I under stand that when she was in ICU,she would answer the phone with Picobo ICU,quite a gal.Mike

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

"Picabo" says Thank You. We think that she is pretty special.

I have a Scottie dog that we rescued about 8 years ago. She is still so afraid. She follows every step that we take but will seldom let us touch her. We have done everything we can think of to help her get over what ever happened in her life. She is just so mentally messed up, such a shame what some animals go through. She watches all of the other animals come in the house but wants NO part of being inside, unless we have a thunderstorm then she is scratching at the door. LOL As soon as it is over she wants back outside.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

What a beautiful combination, Picabo! Would love to see your whole garden!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thank You! Bring your shovel and come on up. Things are just starting to grow. I will post pictures as the summer goes on. I am lucky to have some really pretty plants.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Will be looking for the pics!

By the way, that looks like bee balm up there with the hydrangea. Here is what I thought justica was but I could be wrong.

Not really a Clue, This came from my Grandmother. Who left this world over 30 years ago. She told me it was "Brazilian Plume Plant" or "Justicia" I think this is Justicia carnea.

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Just wondering picabo, could the justicia be a nicotinia of sorts, the leaves look a little like tobacco, and I am fasinated with the plant, and covet seeds,if possible.Like so many others,I have never heard of it before.Mike
