Brunch overlooking the ocean...where?

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

Sue wants to have brunch somewhere in Southern California where we can look out at the ocean. Any suggestions?

The Cottage in Laguna Beach is wonderful! I've been going there since I was a little girl. I wouldnt say it "overlooks" the ocean, but its right across the street and its a great place for breakfast. http://www.thecottagerestaurant.com/

Hi George,

I just read your email and also saw this thread, so I will reply here.

I don't know of any special place to go, as DH and I don't usually do brunches very much.

There is a brand new Hotel in Huntington Beach, call the the Hyatt Regency and it is beautiful. Here is a link to there brunch. http://huntingtonbeach.hyatt.com/property/hotelinfo/dining/dining_info.jhtml?id=3&ssnav=0

When are you planning on going? I have a neighbor that goes to some, and I will ask them for some recommendations. You also might contact our DG members, Stellapathic, who lives in Laguna and also drdon, as he used to live in this area also.

I'll see what else I can find and post it soon. I am babysitting my grandson this weekend so I'm kind of busy. lol

Hi George,

Another Laguna Beach locale comes to mind: Las Brisas Restaurant has a beautiful view of the ocean and after brunch you could take a stroll on the beach. Here's their web address for more info: http://www.eltorito.com/lasbrisas/framespage.html

Las brisas is my choice for view, although the food is a little mediocre for how much you pay. Good ceviche.

Has anyone been to the Tale of the Whale (I think that is the name) on Balboa pennnsula? We went there years ago and I have heard that they have renovated that area. It looks out over the bay rather than the ocean.

Hopefully we will be going this next Sunday. Had planned on going yesterday but I fell Saturday morning and was not up to going out. I had watered my plants on the back porch and was bending down to pick up a plant when my can slipped. I went down on my knees, then my hands and then over onto my head. I have a devil of a time getting up anyway but here I was between plant tables. I eventually used my cane to pull a chair over and used that to get up. Hip and shoulders are sore but nothing broken.

A little late, I know, but thought I would add my two cents...

Las Brisas was my first thought, too. We haven't been for several years, but used to go there several times a year. Not cheap, but it is/was a served brunch.

Hotel Del Coronado is kinda overlooking the ocean, very good food, also expensive, buffet style.

Seems we pay for the view, doesn't it? But it's nice for a treat once in a while.

Our style has changed -- nowadays we have brunch at home with friends, or go to one of the dozens of good cafes on the coast locally and then a walk on the beach. :-)

So, where did you go, George? Hope your bumps and bruises are all better.

Well, no where yet. One thing and then another has come up.

Down your way is a bit far for brunch but lunch or early dinner sounds good. Sue's mother lives in Rancho Bernardo and we stop by for a short time occasionally. Maybe we could arrange to meet you down there sometime.

If it's at the Del, it would have to be at the Grill on our budget! LOL Lots of other places to go, though.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

No,no, I was thinking your style. A small cafe on the coast.

In that case, let me know when you're coming down this way and we'll see what we can fix up!

hiya George,

The Marine Room in La Jolla is nice, but closer to home for you might be one of the two dining rooms at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna beach. Both are right on the water, and like the Marine Room, are actually over the water at high tide. Also, there is the main dining room at the Ritz Carlton in Monarch Beach/ Dana Point which is pricey but nice.

You guys have a great time!

best,
don
