What do yall use to clean your pond from algae a cheap method? I have a 20 gallon container whiskey barrel pond.
How to clean algae in pond?
For algae on the sides, get a large apple snails or few. They're relatively cheap and have a voracious appetite for the stuff!
If you water is simply green, you probably want less sunlight. If there are no fish involved, your local pet stores carry modestly priced solutions that will help you there ... you'll find it in the aquarium supplies section. All of them that I've seen recently advertise themselves as being safe for both fish and plants, but I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to fish.
If you have any friends that have larger ponds, ask them if they use barely straw. A fist sized clump of that in a piece of screen or netting floating behind one or more of your plants might help you with the green water problem (if that's what you're experiencing)
If you have long, filament type algae, a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide will zap that for you. You'll need to manually remove it after a couple days, tho.
Hope this helps,
Buck
I've got a new pond also, & I heard "the more plants the cleaner the water" & it's true! I also bought some fresh water mussels & a few snails to help. I was told to get plants that cover the sunlight (ex. lilypads) because it's the sunlight that allows the algae to grow.

Check out a product called Algae Fix. For only 20 gal it would be cheap enough. It works quite well, and is safe for water plants and fish. :) Jenny
It is true, sunlight causes algae. When I set my pond up a few months ago (this is not my first) I figured on covering 50% of the water surface and providing some dappled shade for part of the day.
I bought 1 water lily with lots of leaves, a few aquarium plants for oxegenating, some water lettuce for floaters and was given several other plants.
Talk about overkill, this isn't my first pond and yet I still learn new stuff. I had to start thinning the leaves on the lily, thin out the lettuce, and yesterday I shared some of the 2 kinds of aquatic Sensitive plant to clear the surface a bit. My lily wasn't getting enough sun to complete its blooms.
My point is, I don't have any algae in this pond because I kept the water surface choked with plants.
I just looked at this picture........I need to get another pond for all those plants!!!!
