sacred lotus: when should i expect aerial leaves?

Corte Madera, CA

hello everyone! i planted two (2) lotus tubers end of march and they both have about 8 leaves each, 6" across.

are my lotuses growing at an ok rate?

when should i expect aerial leaves?

thank you very much for your time.

sincerely,

Mine has 6 leaves 12 inches above the surface now (about 8 are on the surface) and I received mine in mid May. How warm has it been there? Mine took off life a rocket when we hit temps in the high 90's and low 100's. I also put aquatic plant tabs in with a mix of 1/4 sandy clay, 1/4 well rotted sheep manure, and 1/2 top soil.

wowie, lilypon! i'd love to see photos. i just love lotuses.

it must be the weather. we only hit the 80's the other day. a few warmer days (92, 90) friday and saturday, then back to low 80's.

i'm praying for warmer weather then (but it might get too hot everywhere else).

thank you for your input.

Mine is 'Charles Thomas' not a miniature but a small to mid sized one.

I put it in a portable greenhouse last night because we are having one cool day (last night got down to 14C.....to cool for a lotus) so it's with tomatoes, etc. but I do have a pic of one leaf. They first predicted a whole week of cooler weather but tomorrow is supposed to be really hot again.

I'll take a picture of the whole plant after we haul it out again.

In my zone I want a lotus that I can haul inside the house if need be......esp in May when we can get some very cool nights. We would haul it out every morning and bring it in again every night....until mid June.

thank you so much for the photo and will wait for more. i can't get enough of lotuses. mine are 'lavender ladies'. which reminds me, i've forgotten what they're supposed to look like.

here's to warmer weather!

I'll take the low 90's. We've had heat from Texas and Nevada this summer already (and rain from almost all the States) and I'm not too fond of temps (with humidex) in the low hundreds. ;)

Please post a pic of yours too Moonglow......am hoping both of us manages to get a bloom!!!

i sure will once i get a new CF reader. my 3-yr old inserted something else in the slot and bent a few pins.

that will be such a treat if we get blooms first season.

Crossing fingers and toes for both of us! I grew another one but with family problems that fall I missed taking it in before freeze (won't let that happen again). This years tuber had two full segments and the previous one was 1/4 the size (looked like one segment had been cut in half).......so I have higher hopes that I *might* be lucky this time.

Dontcha just love kids! ;)

From another novice Lotus grower, here's wishing you flowers. This is the second season for my 'Perry's Giant Sunburst'. No flowers last year and leaves that stood probably no more than 8" off the surface of the water. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/50747/

I'm so enjoying my blooms this year.....this is flower #3 with at least 3 more to come. Just spectacular 12" blooms. What a treat they are and I was clueless (still am!) about them. Dropped them in the pond in a pot with no holes and watched and waited. I don't fertiize any of my pond plants because of the constant source of nutrients from the large population of Koi that live in the pond.

Here are a couple of images from a bloom that opened yesterday (they only stay open for a few hours each day, until the third day when they stay open 'til evening, then close and begin to lose petals on the morning of day 4).

The first image was taken with the help of a photographic umbrella, this one was taken in full sun.
