First timer Morning Glorys..

Hope, BC(Zone 7a)

I have never grown MG's before, but am so happy with how they turned out so pretty. My neighbors probably think I am nuts, because I am out there every morning taking pictures of the new color of MG that opened that morning....I caught the sun shining right through it on this one..I love this Pic so much I printed it out 8x10 and now have it on my wall!

That is so beautiful! I love that purple blue combination.

It's my first time with MG's, too. Here's my FIRST EVER MG bloom. I planted seeds of Clarke's Heavenly Blue and Star of Yelta, but this is what I got. Strange, huh?

What you've got, Quyen, is not Ipomoea tricolor 'Heavenly Blue', but 'Flying Saucers'. I think something is up with the labeling this year, because I planted 'Flying Saucers' and got 'Blue Star' instead. 'Star of Yelta' is Ipomoea purpurea, and should have dark flowers with lighter throats, very hairy vines with hairy heart-shaped leaves.

I definitely planted heavenly blues and got star of yelta earlier this year. they're blooming now!

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

If they were a personal trade, that wouldn't surprise me, neither would it if you bought them off eBay. Sometimes people just don't know what they really have.

Do you have a photo of your 'Star of Yelta'?

Oh yeah, you were wondering about the hole in the flower...sorry for making you repeat yourself...*sheepish*

It looks to me like common blue... http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/11550/

I have Flying Saucers in my garden? Cool.

I am a bit surprised because these were seeds that I bought in a package from a store. I planted 8 of each. We'll wait and see what the rest of them look like. No blooms on my Star of Yelta yet but the leaves do seem to be more fuzzy and the stems are reddish brown instead of green.

This makes the morning garden walk all the more exciting because I don't know what I'll see.

Those are very pretty :)

I really wish mine would bloom LOL

I planted "heavenly blue's" as well...I hope that is actually what I get!! They are taking a MUCH longer time to grow, but I have 2 containers of them that are slowly making their way towards blooming...
I really like the white ones with just a touch of color... these are from the same pot as my purple one...

iluvmygarden,

You, my esteemed colleague in plants, are forever hooked on morning glories. Join the crowd and just submit to the addiction LOL! Just ask Emma and Dee LOL.

Okay, I think I got it figured out. The Heavenly Blues package must have been a mix because this is what showed up this morning.

Still no sign of Star of Yelta, though. I also got a few Rose Silk seeds from EmmaGrace and have started them. But they are still tiny.

I know what you mean about mix-up in commercial seed packets this year. I planted Scarlett O'Hare - supposed to be red and I got Grandpa Otts.
Something I already have running wild in my backyard!

here's my pupurea climbing belladonna lilies that just came up.... i love it!

Quick, get some stakes! Your purpurea will take over the world! They'll totally cover and eat your plants there...figuratively, of course.

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

I think the seeds from "western" I. nil cultivars (Heavenly Blue, Flying Saucers, Blue Star) are noticeably narrower and paler than I. purpurea seeds. My Japanese MGs set seeds that were fairly chunky but not as uniformly black as I. purpurea "Grandpa Ott".

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Dawnsharon, 'Heavenly Blue' et. al are Ipomoea tricolor. 99% of JMG cultivars are I. nil, and ones like 'Crimson Rambler' and 'Grandpa Ott's' are I. purpurea. (Which I forgot to mention, nuts4spuds, 'Scarlet O'Hara' is I. nil, not I. purpurea like it's sometimes sold as.) True, the seeds for 'western' morning glories (I. tricolor) are more narrow and somewhat 'teardrop' shaped. I posted some photos of the differences a few months ago. iluvmygarden, you have just ruined my theory! I've been blaming my inability to grow morning glories on the cool weather here -- but you're in BC, and you can obviously grow great morning glories. I just must not have the touch. :-)

Don't give up, terracotta, you gotta kill a few to learn how to grow them, so it's been my experience.

Here's my first Star of Yelta. It's smaller than the Heavenly Blues but the color is so intense.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and saw seeds for Moon Flower. Not on my shopping list but I'm so high on my recently discovered ability to grow things so I bought it. I'm thinking of putting a few of them in the same pot as my other MGs.

Any input? Warnings? Will the Moon Flowers overtake my MGs?

You are in full control with your handy dandy shears! Prune when they get out of control, yes?

Orange, CA(Zone 10b)

Shears? I guess I'm shear-shy. Never know what and how much to clip. My husband does all the pruning around our yard.

Hope, BC(Zone 7a)

terracotta,
I still believe it is because of the very early warm weather we had for awhile in the early early spring, I think I planted my first batch at just the right time then, because the ones I planted a few weeks later(after the sun disappeared), are not growing nearly as well as the first bunch did!
Don't give up, we will see the sun again, maybe then they will grow!!!!

Hope, BC(Zone 7a)

Gerris2, You are right, as soon as I saw the first leaves emerge, I was hooked, and then the flowers....forget about it.. LOL!
I am already planning the MG gardens for next year!!!

iluvmygarden, if you plant your JMGs isolated from each other, let's talk trading for seeds ok? I have some exciting ones going now and if the *&^%@#$%() squirrels stop digging them UP OY then I will have a successful and joyful season.

I think pruning is the key...show your power over the vine, you are master with the shears LOLOLOL laughing lots but it's true.

Sign me silly in Wilmington tonight,

Joseph

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

I used the power of the shears tonight...I just cut off my fence a species that was taking over all my other MG's, my corn, most of the fence, and taking off along the ground. It was on it's way towards my dog's house. I was afraid that I might not find him in the morning!

You go, QB, yeehaw!

Hope, BC(Zone 7a)

Gerris2 ;
My MG's in the pictures were from a mixed package of seeds, so I wouldn'y no how to decipher between one color from the next...I also went away for 3 days last week and it was HOT outside and I am afraid that first batch of MG's didn't pull through it too well..they are a very thirsty buch! They were starting to go on the decline anyway, much more leaves in yellow than in green LOL, and finally I just hacked them all down 2 days ago........ :-(
P.S. Where are the seeds? I don't even recall seeing any seeds while I was cutting them down, and usually I am good for gathering the seeds from my plants that are finishing up...Who knows though...it was still flowering a little bit when I cut them down, so I was probably distracted by my sadness of cuttiing down a plant that is still blooming, even though it was ALL yellow dying leaves........

Quyen: I have grown Moon Flowers before, but only in a small planter (so I don't know if they would take over your MG's, but I just wanted to say that I looked EVERYWHERE for moon flower seeds this year, and couldn't find one pack!!! Usually I see them everywhere I go!!!!!!!

Orange, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm still waiting for those MF to sprout. They sure take their own sweet time.

Iluvmygarden:

Sorry to hear about your MGs. It's amazing how attached one can become to plants.

I still have lots of moonflower seeds left. They are the regular white color ones. Would you like some? Dmail me your address and I will send them to you.

iluvmygarden, the seeds form in a round seed capsule after the flower drops off. It is first green, then turns papery brown, at which time you can harvest the seeds.

Riverside, CA(Zone 9b)

MG's are so pretty. I don't now why I didn't plant seeds long before this. This is my first time growing them and I love em. Here is a picture of different colors. Guess the seeds came that way. I let them grow on a tree that had die in a pot.

It looks like you have the 'Tall' mix. It looks really nice on that tree.
