Last year when the 'Boogie Woogie' lilies I had purchased in 2003 bloomed 2 stalks bloomed a solid pale yellow and the other stalk had the pale red edging it was supposed to have. This year all 3 stalks are blooming pale yellow with no red lining. It is a beautiful moonlight yellow but that red edging really makes the flower special. Does anybody have any idea why this would happen? Last year I blamed it on the bulbs being new but that is not the case this year. It doesn't get much direct sun, just a few hours in the morning but gets very bright indirect light the rest of the day.
The stalks are all vigorous and healthy looking. They stand between 5' and 6' tall and have lush, deep green foliage. The blooms are lovely as they are but.......
I will probably email the supplier to see if they can explain it.
It does have the most exquisite jasmine scent.
This is Orienpet 'Boogie Woogie' BUT.....
Especially red and pink colors in lily flowers intensify with amount of sunlight they receive. It is not inconcievable that the red ring is bleached so much that it can not be seen due to lack of sunlight. The only way to determine this would be to move one of the bulbs to a sunnier spot.
Funny, kd, I thought it was just the opposite - usually cooler climates being out more intense colors. I had lilies bloom last month that looked EAXCTLY like the ones in NoH2O's pics - and I did plant Boogie Woogies and just assumed they never bloomed. Now I have put two and two together, and I think I know what happened!
Steve, are yours in shade too?
My Boogie Woogie has red on outside of buds but NONE on opened florets. Hmm.... Lovely lily anyway. Very strong, grows well. Was a freebie from Botanus last year. Has been in bloom for 3 weeks so far. Yumm
