I'm a big horse lover and was just wondering who had some of these beautiful creatures. I myself don't have any, wish I did. Would love to see photos of them too if you have any available. I know this is a wierd request, but hey this is general disscussion right? LOL
Who has horses here?
Hi Lizzy,
I have a big seal bay Thorobred. I've had 'Stanley' for almost 17 years. He had been retired from the race track only a few months when I got him. We've been through quite a lot together, and he's part of the family, even though he lives at a boarding facility almost an hours drive. He's retired now and has a nice big stall for the nights, and is turned out everyday (unless the weather's really bad). A friend of mine who's a trainer checks on him regularly, when I can't get out there. They are just the most wonderful creatures, and what a sense of humor!!
Aw Stanley sounds wonderful Momcat! Do you have a picture of him to show by chance?
I loved horses and ponies since I was very little...had a pony when I was about 7, he was quite a frisky fella though!
Named Little Bambino, he was a paint/pinto. Had to give him up when we moved.
Thanks for sharing Momcat!
Lizzy
I owned a bay Morgan/Quarterhorse gelding for 6 1/2 years. His name was Banjo.....a real sweetheart, but you couldn't daydream on him! I boarded him, at first living 1/2 hr from him, but the last couple of years he was only 3 mins away. The area I was in had lots of trails throughout the woods, and I rode him all over the place. I had to give him to friends, for financial reasons, and they ended up buying a farm in New Brunswick, Canada....taking him and their other horses, to live up there. Banjo was seven when I got him, and even though it's been almost twelve years since the last time I saw him, I think about him all the time. Hopefully, he's still standing on four good legs, up there in Canada, enjoying old age.
Unfortunately, my daughter wiped out all my photos and negatives, with the exception of a poster-sized print I had made, and framed.
I have horses and ride quite a lot doing endurance rides. That is like a marathon done on horseback. I have some purebreds and some crossbreds. They are all individuals and have a sense of humor. I have one I can't go to sleep on, he spooks sideways or sometimes just plants his feet and I keep going. Makes an interesting ride.
Sounds like Banjo, Mary! He'd spook, where things had been years ago, but were now long gone! One time I was galloping him on a dirt road, and I saw a dark semi-circular mark in the dirt, where a dirt biker had spun out. As soon as Banj saw it.....legs straight out, to a dead stop in two hops. In my mind's eye I saw the ambulance coming.......luckily I ended up with a faceful of neck! (Maybe seeing it before he did helped???)

Aw sounds real nice about your horse talon5.
I feel bad though that you don't have him anymore.
Must of been hard to let him go, I know I couldn't do it.
Thanks for sharing your story. Too bad I can't see a picture of him. Love his name too!
Lizzy
Thanks for sharing MaryE!
What kind of purebreds and mix are they?
Would love to see photos if you could show them?
Lizzy
I've got an App, Lightfoot. He was *supposed* to be black with a white blanket. He was born pure black, with a white stripe running from his shoulder to his tail...ala Pepe le Pew. He got his name from the way he "dances" around things in his way. He doesn't really spook, just picks up his feet- like a cat in snow.
I used to have a TB bay mare named Airy Acres. she was an okay trail horse but was too clumsy for dressage or jumping. She had been a brood mare before I got her and that is what she wanted to do while I had her. Before her a nervous little bay TB gelding named Atmosphere. He was a super cross country and dressage horse.
I haven't owned a horse in about 15 years but have trained and groomed them on and off since than, both in show barns (dressage/3-day eventing) and racing barns (standardbreds not TB's). One day we will have the farm together enough to afford the housing and fencing needed for a horse or at least $$ to board one.
I am to lazy to take care of Horses so we just put in a gate to the neighbors field and let their horses come over to graze...I get to feed them carrots and apples and they get to brush em and shoe em!
Hi Lizzy. My purebreds are Arabs, 3 of them at the moment. I have 2 Quarterhorse broodmares, a Saddlebred gelding, an Arab/QH gelding (the spooky one), a Paint/Arab gelding, an Arab/Thoroughbred gelding (retired endurance horse), and 2 yearling mules that belong to the QH mares. They all live in pastures year round, I don't have a barn for them, they do quite well in my dry climate. The 4 year old purebred filly hurt her leg just above the hoof last evening, so I need to go rebandage it. Check out the farm forum for today and read a little more about her accident.
Hope your philly's cut heals ok, Mary. Is it the fetlock or the front side? Ankles are always so vulnerable to cuts.
Keep it as clean as you can, and with a good ointment, it'll hopefully heal well.
I was lucky with Banjo....only saw him sick once, and thankfully it didn't last long.
Best of luck.
Banjo was aptly named.....high strung! But he was a sweetheart, despite his nerves! Thanks for the empathy, Lizzy. My daughter never stopped hating me for that one, and I can't say I blame her. Sometimes, life isn't easy, though. I try to focus on how enriched my life has been, for having had Banj for the time I did, rather than focus on the fact that he's gone. I miss him all the time. There is NOTHING like a horse, and till you own one, you just can't know. Thanks for the thread.......kinda took me by surprise!
Yeah I guess you're right on that one talon5. There's nothing like owning a horse. I just owned a pony when I was little, he was quite frisky though, had to give him up when we moved though. He was kept with other horses across the street, I would go over there everyday to see him and the other horses, climb under the fence and lead them around by there halsters. Then one day I got to close to them, and one horse step right one my little foot! LOL So there's a little short horse story for ya! =)
Lizzy
MaryE your horses sound wonderful! Hope your one gets better real soon with his foot! Poor thing!
I seen an arabian horse once..beautiful creature..very sassy and robust though aren't they? The one I saw was at a riding ranch my husband and I went to. He was in a field all his own, beautiful white, when we rode by him outside his fence, he ran down toward the fence to us, ears perked, tail up, very magestic and neighing like the dickens!
Very lively! They mated him with other horses they had there for trail riding.
Thanks for sharing!
Lizzy
Aw bucky your Appy sounds so cute! Pepe Le Pew. He sounds very beautiful. I just love all horses. Everyone is such a beautiful creature. I've got to get over to my neighbors and bug them to see if I can ride theirs. LOL
Lizzy
The filly's cut is not too bad but she does not want to put her weight on that foot and stretch it. When I changed the bandage I was pleased with what I saw, or rather what I didn't see: not much swelling and no infection. She had a bad one about 3 years ago that was infected before I saw it. That one was a much deeper cut and I took her to the vet and had her on penacillin for about 10 days, bandaged it daily and she healed up with only a small scar. This time it is the other leg. It is under the fetlock behind the leg, above the hoof, a real common place for a wire cut. I will clean it up with water (garden hose), squirt some betadine on it, apply Nitrofurazone ointment, and bandage it for the next few days and she should be fine. She is one of my future endurance horses. Today she was much calmer and loved the attention. I brushed her and talked to her a lot and she just stood there and soaked it up like a sponge. She is a real sweetheart. I have her mother and half brother, they all have the same personality. I hope she isn't spooky like her brother, Breezy. When we get the scanner working I will be able to post some pictures. Don't hold your breath, it will be a while. :o)
Great MaryE! Can't wait to see those pics!
Lizzy
Well, having been an only child, and knowing for health reasons that Mom had the factory taken out, I was really shocked when she called and told me I had a baby brother. I was 38 at the time, thought this was a little sudden, and suspicious... Turns out when she was married (the third time, twice a widow) that her DH gave her a filly as a wedding present! Whew!
She has been trough the mill as a farmers wife. He isn't a farmer, they live on a farm. He is a long haul trucker. He entered the marriage with two horses, one of which he gave to her. They have bred them, and have been adding to the family since. The second foal was born absolutely white. Not a speck of color. Not being the farmer, just her daughter, I can't remember what the congenital defect is, but all white horses are born without their intestinal tracts intact. Such a tiny, beautiful animal. She called the vet and told him things were odd. He explained and told her to look for even a freckle of color. The foal died within 18 hours, and Dear Mom, all alone on the farm, needed to figure out what to do. The Knackerman charged an outrageous fee to come pick things up, so the dear woman loaded this poor gone one into the trunk of her Buick, by herself, and took her off to the Knackerman. As she was so beautiful and Doomed also, Mom named her Angel.
The breeder has since been reprimanded as they are partially responsible for preventing these obvious breeding problems. The horses have been bred six times since and no more reoccurances.
What a unique 'little sister' to have.
The 'boys' are all stinkers!
Cena
What a dreadful thing for your Mom to have had to experience, Cena. I can't imagine the elation of having a foal, and then having it all stolen away, when it suddenly dies. What a heartbreaker.
Aw Cena, I feel so bad for your Mom. I have tears in my eyes as I speak. The poor thing...Angel is quite an appropiate name. God bless your Mom and especially beautiful creation "Angel".
