What to expect? Brug fom seed

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hello from Canada,

I bought a pkt of Brugmansia seed not knowing anything about it. I got two plants which are doing VERY well, both outdoors. Now I'm trying to figure out just what I've got myself into... They are both in tubs; the one in the photo (at home) faces south and gets full sun from about 7:30 am to around 3:00 in the afternoon. The other is at the cottage and faces SW. I transplanted them from the germinating/growing pots (in my kitchen) into their tubs at the end of May, when they were about 6-8" high. Our temperatures are ranging from a low of 16C at night to a high of 31C at mid-day, but mostly 20C nights and 25C days. (20C=61F; 25C=78F).

I'm not sure how big this plant will get, or when it will bloom. I pinched it back about three weeks ago and have twin leaders and four side-shoots. It likes it here, despite the unexpected crowding from the cannas.

Will this baby produce seeds for next year? Should I bring it inside at some point... before or after frost?

I certainly got the attention of the neighbours with this planting!

Enjoying my new adventures on DG. Sorry the photo is sideways.

Andy ....... cardinal rule , DON"T PINCH BRUGS !!

You will only get blooms after it forms a 'Y' .

Your double leader is not a Y , they are side branches and do not produce blooms ...... until 'they' finally do the 'Y' thing.

She should be in her own 5 gallon pot by herself. She should be huge by the end of summer. Frost will kill it so bring it in or save cuttings over winter.

She will not produce seeds unles there is a different cultivar close by. Seeds NEVER look like the parents.

congratulations on successfully starting brugmansia from seed!

when started from seed they have to go through a vegetative stage first. I guess some start the flowering stage as soon 3-4' tall but one of my seedlings I started this winter didn't start the 'Y' till it was 6'.

"pinching" back set you back. Those laterals will probably still have to go through the vegative stage.

hope - he's got one brug seedling but it's planted with canna lilies!!
They both like lots of water and fertilizer but I'd say you should get that brug out of there now. Cannas I put in half-barrels have it rootbound by the end of the season plus they have multiplied. The brug just won't have much chance.

Welcome Andrew to Dave's and the brug Forum.

I think you may really have a datura seedling there. If so, they will bloom very soon. And depending on which they are, you may have some pretty spectacular blooms. I have only grown daturas a few times, so I will not give you any advice on them.

On brugs, it is best not to pinch them back if you want them to bloom at their earliest. Brug seedling can grow to 6 ft before they form a Y and then grow flowering wood. So each time you pinch it back, you prolong the Y from being made.

I just went out to look at a 4 inch datura. It also Ys and flowers from the Y. Luckily, it Ys very short. LOL. This plant is about 5 inches tall in a 4 inch pot and has 2 buds.

Looks like a Brug to me and please remove the canna so it can have that beautiful pot all by itself.

Best of luck to you, you have made a great start.
