I have an area near my daughter's swing set/fort that I would like to obstruct the view from my driveway. I'm not quite sure how to plant a tree on a hillside. Oh, this is not a steep slope.
Need HelpHow Do You Plant a Tree on Hillside?
Plant it with the trunk plumb, just as you would on level ground. Terrace the planting location so the top of the rootball is level with the ground, and build up a levee on the downhill side to hold water for the first year or two. If it comes in a container instead of B&B, be careful to blend the potting mix into the surrounding soil or else wash it out gently and plant the tree as a bare-root specimen, spreading the roots to eliminate any circling. Remove any cords or labels from around the trunk, mulch it, water it properly, and presto -- you have a tree! Given the heat of the season, especially in your zone (if you're in the Southeast), you might want to wait a few months before planting.
