Vegetable - Fall planting

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

Hello everyone!

I am in nothern CA and was wondering what kind of vegetables you guys plant in fall and around when. Do you get to harvest it this year or next year or in spring? I have never done fall planting but I am thinking of doing it this year.

Any comments would be GREAT!

Thanks,

Here are some fall vegies I plant
Beets - Aug Sept. 55-70 days to harvest
Bok Choy - October 40-60 days to harvest
Broccoli & cabbage - Seed July to mid Aug. - Transplant Aug to Sept. Broccoli 50-60 days to harvest and Cabbage 80-90 days to harvest.
Cauliflower - same as cabbage
Carrots - Sept.
Garlic - Oct/Nov. For harvest the next summer
Lettuce - Plant head letttuce in early spring only. Leaf lettuce can be grown anytime although it does not like extremely hot weather. I plant leaf lettuce from Sept thru April in Zone 9.
Peas - Sept - Oct. 60 to 80 days.
Spinach - Sept. 40 to 50 days. Bolts in hot weather
Swiss chard - from Aug on into fall - 60 tp 80 days
Turnips - Sept. 30-35 days.
Radishes - anytime.

Hi, this is a great chart from www.sacramentogardening.com
http://sacramentogardening.com/vegetables.html
Tmm and Scott, Sac is zone 9, it would be applicable to you guys, too.
I've asked Angela if she might pop in here when she has a spare moment. I know with George's good info and this page, I'm inspired.
Happy sowing!

Don't forget fall planting for potatoes! I planted some small white potatoes and got a great harvest (and I bought the potato "starts" at the grocery store!).

If you've got space, and like them, fava beans and/or chick peas are nice fall/winter veggies. They are big attractive plants and fix nitrogen in the soil.

Last year I did garlic in half my garden and a cover crop of wheat and hairy vetch in the other half.

I may try to be more ambitious this year.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my thread. I have so many ideas now that I can't wait till September (that's when I am thinking of starting some veggy crops.)

geoz, thank you for the time to harvest PLUS the harvest time! That gives me a pretty good idea as to when I can actually harvest.

sacremento website looks very good too - I checked out the temperature differences between Sacramento and here and although summer temps are pretty difference (by over 10 degrees), the fall/winder temps are very close so I can use the list for the fall.

Thanks again!

Be sure to check the seed packets for number of days to harvest. Things like brocolli and cabbage have several different cultivars - some fast maturing and some not so fast. The days to harvest listings are only a guide as weather and temps. can change the time to maturity somewhat. Good luck.

Thank you Geoz!
Yep, I should have thought about that (different maturing with different cultivars).
